Whether engaging the worn spectacle of history, expressing seemingly unmotivated violence, or reinventing outlandish Tibetan myths, these stories are defined by their devotion to theatrics and their willful apathy toward everything held sacred by the generation that witnessed the Cultural Revolution.Jing Wang has selected provocative examples of this new school of writing, which gained prominence in the late 1980s. Contradicting many long-cherished beliefs about Chinese writers—including the alleged tradition of writing as a political act against authoritarianism—these stories make a dramatic break from conventions of modern Chinese literature by demonstrating an irreverence toward history and culture and by celebrating the artificiality of storytelling.     Using highly disaggregated, Harmonized System (HS) 8-digit, product-category level data collected by the People's Republic of China's (PRC) Customs Office for 2000 and 2008, we perform an in-depth anatomy of the PRC's trade in manufactured goods. First, we distinguish between foreign firms and domestic firms, with the latter further divided into private firms and public firms. Second, we distinguish products as either final goods or intermediate goods. Third, we look at not only the PRC's exports but also its imports, and test for the relative importance of the extensive margin - number of goods - versus the intensive margin - the amount traded per good. Fourth, we estimate gravity equations from the perspective of dynamics utilizing a dynamic adjustment model. Overall, our analysis yields a number of new stylized facts and generates some interesting puzzles about the PRC's exports and imports.

    Despite the central role of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in global parts and components trade, most previous studies on the PRC's parts and components trade have been limited to a particular trade partner or some specific industries. The central objective of this paper is to provide a more complete description of the PRC’s parts and components trade. To do so, we systematically separate total trade flows into parts and components and final goods, and give a description of the pattern of parts and components trade for the period 1992-2009. We then estimate a gravity model to examine the determinants of the PRC's trade in parts and components. We find that the share of parts and components trade in the PRC's total trade has grown rapidly.

    The Chinese authorities have launched a range of policies and incentives at the national and regional level to attract citizens who have studied and worked abroad to return in order to contribute to upgrading the competitiveness of the Chinese economy, particularly in light of China's entrance to the World Trade Organization. In other words, the returners are expected to stimulate organizational learning in existing organizations and in new companies. This article provides an overview over what has been done to date and points out that simply increasing the number of returners is not enough to achieve organizational learning. Drawing on research findings about the dynamics of organizational learning from returned expatriate managers in international companies, the article develops recommendations for government policies, corporate strategies and Chinese returners. In den letzten Jahren hat die chinesische Regierung vielfältige Maßnahmen eingeleitet, um chinesische Bürger, die im Ausland studiert und gearbeitet haben, zur Rückkehr zu bewegen, um mit deren Wissen die Konkurrenzfähigkeit der Wirtschaft des Landes zu stärken. Diese Transformationsaufgabe, die durch den WTO Beitritt Chinas als dringend angesehen wird, erfordert umfangreiche Organisationslernprozesse. Der vorliegende Beitrag bietet einen Überblick über die Palette der bisherigen Maßnahmen und weist darauf hin, dass eine rein quantitativ ausgerichtete Politik kein Garant für den nötigen Grad an Organisationslernen ist. Aufbauend auf Forschungsergebnissen über Organisationslernen durch Expatriates in multinationalen Unternehmen, werden Empfehlungen für die staatliche Politik, für Unternehmen und für die Rückkehrer ausgearbeitet.
