    Allen Ginsberg (19261-1997) gilt als Barde der amerikanischen Beat-Generation. Wie kaum ein anderer symbolisiert er die Suche nach einem neuen Bewußtsein, die Auflehnung gegen das Establishment und das kleinbürgerliche Moralkorsett der amerikanischen Gesellschaft Fixpunkte seines Lebens waren seine Homosexualität, radikale politische Einmischung, Drogenexperimente und die Hinwendung zum Buddhismus. Seine Weggefährten Jack Kerouac, William S. Burroughs, Bob Dylan und John Lennon. Schumacher beherrscht das komplette Handwerkszeug der Biographie: in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Ginsberg selbst, arbeitete er 8 Jahre an diesem Buch, durchforstete Ginsbergs Archiv und führte zahllose Interviews. Dabei herausgekommen ist ein fundiertes Persönlichkeitsporträt, das den Künslter und seinen Schaffensprozeß in den Vordergrund stellt, gleichzeitig aber eine Zeit der gesellschaftlichen Befreiung sehr plastisch nachzeichnet. Ein opulentes, manchmal zu detail-verliebtes Werk über einen Dichter, der in Europa etwas aus der Diskussion verschwunden ist. (3) (Sven Precht)
