    Der Autor beschreibt die wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse über die Evolution des menschlichen Farbensehens. Demnach sei die Vielfalt der Farbempfindungen stufenweise durch das jeweilige Auftreten neuer Empfindungspaare entstanden. Diese von Farbpolaritäten und deren Entwicklung geprägte Sichtweise der Farben widerspreche den bis heute in Farbenbüchern und Lexika vielzitierten Dreifarbentheorien. Der Autor zeigt die Schwachstellen dieser Dreifarbentheorien auf, wobei er an jüngste Veröffentlichungen der wissenschaftlichen Farbenforschung anknüpft. Er schlägt vor, Farbensehen sollte vermehrt unter biologischen Gesichtspunkten unterrichtet werden. Anschließend wird aufgezeigt, daß bereits in Goethes Farbenlehre die Entwicklung von Farbpolaritäten thematisiert wurde. Goethe sei bestrebt gewesen, die Vielfalt der Farben unter dem Aspekt ihrer Entstehung zu erklären. Damit habe er eine Fragestellung zu lösen versucht, die zu seiner Zeit unmöglich korrekt beantwortet werden konnte. Sein entwicklungsorientiertes Denken über Farben sei seiner Zeit um Jahrhunderte vorausgeeilt. Damit stellt sich der Autor gegen die meistens geäußerte Ansicht, Goethes Farbenstudien seien völlig anachronistisch gewesen.
