Gerade Geschichte erscheint uns gerne als die Suche nach der Wahrheit. Aber was ist eigentlich 'echt' an populären Geschichtsdarstellungen? Wie und warum wird Authentizität suggeriert? Aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive wendet sich dieser Band verschiedenen Aspekten von Authentizität in populärkulturellen Geschichtsdiskursen der letzten Jahre zu und berücksichtigt unterschiedliche Medien wie Film, Fernsehen, Literatur, Geschichtsunterricht und Ausstellungen.

It traces topical reactions to new forms of racism and religious fundamentalism, to legal as well as 'illegal' immigration, and to the threat of global terror; yet it also highlights new forms of intercultural communication and convivial exchange. Framed by contributions from novelists Patrick Neate and Rajeev Balasubramanyam, Multi-Ethnic Britain 2000+ showcases how artistic representations in literature, film, music and the visual arts reflect and respond to social and political discourses, and how they contribute to our understanding of the current (trans)cultural situation in Britain.     Over the last decade, migration flows from Central and Eastern Europe have become an issue in political debates about human rights, social integration, multiculturalism and citizenship in Great Britain. The increasing number of Eastern Europeans living in Britain has provoked ambivalent and diverse responses, including representations in film and literature that range from travel writing, humorous fiction, mockumentaries, musicals, drama and children¿s literature to the thriller. The present volume discusses a wide range of representations of Eastern and Central Europe and its people as reflected in British literature, film and culture. The book offers new readings of authors who have influenced the cultural imagination since the nineteenth century, such as Bram Stoker, George Bernard Shaw, Joseph Conrad and Arthur Koestler. It also discusses the work of more contemporary writers and film directors including Sacha Baron Cohen, David Cronenberg, Vesna Goldsworthy, Kapka Kassabova, Marina Lewycka, Ken Loach, Mike Phillips, Joanne K. Rowling and Rose Tremain. With its focus on post-Wall Europe, Facing the East in the West goes beyond discussions of migration to Britain from an established postcolonial perspective and contributes to the current exploration of 'new' European identities.

    Since the mid-1990s, the black experience in Britain has begun to be (re)negotiated intensely, with a strong focus on history. Narrative Projections of a Black British History considers narratives that construct, or engage with, aspects of a black British history. Part I poses the question of what sort of narratives have emerged from, and in turn determine, key events (such as the iconic 'Windrush' moment) and developments and provides basic insights into theoretical frameworks. It also offers a large number of comparative readings, considering both 'factual' and 'fictional' forms of representation such as history books, documentary films, life writing, novels, and drama, and identifies main strands, 'official' narratives and countercurrents. Part II embarks on close readings and analyses of a selection of narratives that can be classed as reactions to the 'established' historical culture. Overall, the book draws attention to collective currents and individual positions, affirmative and critical approaches: Together, they form a representative image of a specific moment in the ongoing debate about a black British history.

    Zusammenfassung: Das vorliegende Dokument ist eine leicht überarbeitete Fassung meiner Magisterarbeit (Universität Tübingen 2002), in der ich die Bedeutung und vielfältige Darstellung der Erinnerung in Caryl Phillips’ Romanen der Neunzigerjahre Cambridge (1991), Crossing the River (1993) und The Nature of Blood (1997) beleuchte. Das Sujet der Erinnerung durchdringt die Romane sowohl in ihrer thematischen Entwicklung als auch in ihrer formalen Ausgestaltung. Darüber hinaus ist eine Entwicklung der Erinnerungsthematik in Phillips’ Romanen zu konstatieren. Nach einer kurzen Verortung der Romane in Phillips' Werk und einer theoretischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Komplex Erinnerung und Gedächtnis (v.a. in Anlehnung an die Schriften von Aleida und Jan Assmann) widmet sich die Arbeit ganz der vergleichenden Analyse der Romane. Verhandelte Themen sind u.a. Phillips' Verhandlung der Dichotomie "Geschichte-Erinnerung", von Gedächtnisformen und -modi, Täter- und Opfergedächtnissen und den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen eines kulturellen Gedächtnisses
