Based on a panel of annual data for 17 growth and inflation forecasts from 14 institutions for Germany, we analyse forecast accuracy for the periods before and after the Great Recession, including measures of directional change accuracy based on Receiver Operating Curves (ROC).We find only small differences on forecast accuracy between both time periods. We test whether the conditions for forecast rationality hold in both time periods. We document an increased crosssection variance of forecasts and a changed correlation between inflation and growth forecast errors after the crisis, which might hint to a changed forecaster behaviour. This is also supported by estimated loss functions before and after the crisis, which suggest a stronger incentive to avoid overestimations (growth) and underestimations (inflation) after the crisis. Estimating loss functions for a 10-year rolling window also reveal shifts in the level and direction of loss asymmetry and strengthens the impression of a changed forecaster behaviour after the Great Recession.

Mit 50 Stillleben, Zeichnungen, Textilien, Masken und Figuren aus Emil Noldes (1867-1956) Sammlung rückt der Ausstellungskatalog einen weniger bekannten Aspekt seines künstlerischen Werkes ins Licht. (Maria Stegers) Eine exotische Facette im Werk Emil Noldes nehmen jene Stillleben ein, die außereuropäische Objekte aus der Sammlung des Malers zum Motiv haben. Ethnografische Artefakte waren ein beliebtes Sammelobjekt expressionistischer Künstler, schienen sie doch das Ursprüngliche und Elementare darzustellen (vgl. dazu "Emil Nolde. Die Südseereise", BA 6/08, "Die Brücke in der Südsee", BA 2/06, und "Wilde Welten", ID 28/10). Mit 50 Stillleben, Zeichnungen, Textilien, Masken und Figuren aus Noldes Sammlung rückt der Ausstellungskatalog (Hamburg bis 28.05.2012; Berlin Frühjahr 2013) einen weniger bekannten Aspekt seines Oeuvres ins Licht. Diese weltoffene und fantasievolle Seite Noldes steht in spannungsvollem Gegensatz zu seinem Lebensgefühl "ein nordischer Künstler zu sein" (vgl. "Emil Nolde - Begegnung mit dem Nordischen", BA 5/08). Für größere Bestände ist der stabil gebundene, kleinformatig illustrierte Band eine sinnvolle Ergänzung zu Titeln wie "Emil Nolde - Reiselust" (ID 13/10), "Bewundert, gefürchtet und geehrt - Emil Nolde malt die Frauen" (ID 33/10) und "Emil Nolde - die religiösen Bilder" (ID-G 50/11).(3) (Maria Stegers)

Enrico Bombieri proved that the ABC Conjecture implies Roth's theorem in 1994. This paper concerns the other direction. In making use of Bombieri's and Van der Poorten's explicit formula for the coefficients of the regular continued fractions of algebraic numbers, we prove that Roth's theorem implies a weakened non-effective version of the ABC Conjecture in certain cases relating to roots.

Based on German business cycle forecast reports covering 10 German institutions for the period 1993-2017, the paper analyses the information content of German forecasters' narratives for German business cycle forecasts. The paper applies textual analysis to convert qualitative text data into quantitative sentiment indices. First, a sentiment analysis utilizes dictionary methods and text regression methods, using recursive estimation. Next, the paper analyses the different characteristics of sentiments. In a third step, sentiment indices are used to test the efficiency of numerical forecasts. Using 12-month-ahead fixed horizon forecasts, fixed-effects panel regression results suggest some informational content of sentiment indices for growth and inflation forecasts. Finally, a forecasting exercise analyses the predictive power of sentiment indices for GDP growth and inflation. The results suggest weak evidence, at best, for in-sample and out-of-sample predictive power of the sentiment indices

This paper argues that the distribution of the coefficients of the regular continued fraction should be considered for each algebraic number of degree >2 separately. For random numbers the coefficients are distributed by the Gauss-Kuzmin distribution (also called Khinchin's law). We apply the Kullback Leibler Divergence (KLD) to show that the Gauss-Kuzmin distribution does not fit well for algebraic numbers of degree > 2. Our suggestion to truncate the Gauss-Kuzmin distribution for finite parts fits slightly better, but its KLD is still much larger than the KLD of a random number. We consider differences regarding Khinchin's constant and Khinchin's approximation speed between random and algebraic numbers and conclude that laws concerning the random numbers do not automatically carry over to the algebraic numbers.

Do politics matter for macroprudential policy? I show that changes to macroprudential regulation exhibit a predictable electoral cycle in the run-up to 221 elections across 58 countries from 2000 through 2014. Policies restricting mortgages and consumer credit are systematically less likely to be tightened before elections during credit booms and economic expansions. Consistent with theories of opportunistic political cycles, this pattern is stronger when election outcomes are uncertain or in countries where political interference is more likely. In contrast to monetary policy, I find limited evidence that central banks are uniquely insulated from political cycles in macroprudential policy. These results suggest that political pressures may limit the ability of regulators to "lean against the wind."

So sehr der Mensch die Katastrophe fürchtet, so sehr fasziniert sie ihn. Dies spiegelt sich auch in einem breiten Angebot populärer Computerspiele wieder, die den Weltuntergang in Szene setzen. Im Vergleich dazu wird anknüpfend an die Rezeptionsgeschichte der biblischen Apokalypse deren historischer Sitz im Leben sowie deren eigentliche Aussageabsicht erarbeitet. Die Schüler*innen sollen der Angst vor der Katastrophe eigene Hoffnungsbotschaften entgegensetzen und dabei auch die christliche Hoffnung auf eine neue Welt bzw. ein neues Leben in die Reflexion einbeziehen.
