    Kulturgeschichte nimmt als Teildisziplin der Geschichtswissenschaft seit Jahren die Vorreiterrolle ein. Was macht sie so attraktiv und wie wird sie geschrieben? Die Autorin schildert verschiedene Zugänge, die Historiker seit den letzten 300 Jahren wählen, um historisches Denken in Theoreme und Theorien zu fassen. Zugänge sind nach Green ua Psychoanalyse, Marxismus, Linguistik, Semiotik, Strukturalismus und Poststrukturalismus. Schlüsselbegriffe sind "Zeitgeist", der als nichtübersetztes deutsches Wort Einzug in andere Sprachen gefunden hat, wie auch "Mentalität" oder das "Unbewusste". Letztlich geht es um die Frage, welche Steuerungsmechanismen bei der Konstituierung des kollektiven Gedächtnisses und der Erinnerungskultur herrschen.
