    Since the second half of the twentieth century various routes, including history and literature, are offered in dealing with the catastrophe of World War II and the Holocaust. Historiographies and novels are of course written with words; how can they bear witness to and reverberate with traumatic experience that escapes or resists language? In search for an alternative mode of expression and representation, this volume focuses on postwar German and Austrian writers who made use of music in their exploration of the National Socialist past. Their works invoke, however, new questions: What happens when we cross the line between narration and documentation, and between memory and a musical piece? How does identification and fascination affect our reading of the text? What kind of ethical issues do these testimonies raise? As this volume shows, reading these musical biographies is both troubling and compelling since they ‘fail’ to come to terms with the past. In playing the haunting music that does not let us put the matter to rest, they call into question not only the exclusion of personal stories by official narratives, but also challenge writers’ and readers’ most intimate perspectives on an unmasterable past.

    Nach 1945 trägt die Literatur eine neue Last. Die Frage der Repräsentation ist nun mit einer Katastrophe verbunden. Es ist eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Vergangenheit, mit den Gegenständen der Erinnerung und des Vergessens, in der sich die Fragen der Sprache selbst - die Fragen nach dem Sinn des Schreibens, der Darstellung und der Dokumentation - neu erschließen lassen. Das Ziel dieses Aufsatzes ist es, die Poetik einer Erinnerungsarbeit in der deutschen, österreichischen und hebräischen Literatur nach 1945 zu rekonstruieren, indem die Verwendungsweise musikalischer Diskurse als Grundlage einer Erzählkunst exemplarischer Texte geprüft wird. Der Aufsatz widmet sich den folgenden Romanen: Die 'Blechtrommel' (1959) von Günter Grass, 'Malina' (1971) von Ingeborg Bachmann, 'Beton' (1982) und 'Auslöschung' (1986) von Thomas Bernhard, 'Rosendorf Quartett' (1987) und 'Der Schatten von Rosendorf' (2001) von Nathan Shacham, 'Vom Wasser' (1998) von John von Düffel und 'Die Katze und der Schmetterling' (2001) von Yoel Hoffmann. Es sind Texte von Autoren, die den Versuch unternommen haben, sowohl die semiotischen Elemente der musikalischen Sprache als auch einen spezifischen Diskurs über Musik in die literarischen Arbeiten zu übertragen, um eine Art von poetischem Gedächtnis zu rekonstruieren. Es sind poetische Räume der Wiederholungen, in denen verdrängte und verlorene Geschichten aufgedeckt und reflektiert werden. Es ist letztlich jedoch eine infragestellende Poetik der Spuren und Anspielungen, eine Literatur der Dissonanzen, die die Katastrophe der Vergangenheit zu Wort zu bringen versucht.

    Nach 1945 trägt die Literatur eine neue Last. Die Frage der Repräsentation ist nun mit einer Katastrophe verbunden. Es ist eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Vergangenheit, mit den Gegenständen der Erinnerung und des Vergessens, in der sich die Fragen der Sprache selbst - die Fragen nach dem Sinn des Schreibens, der Darstellung und der Dokumentation - neu erschließen lassen. Das Ziel dieses Aufsatzes ist es, die Poetik einer Erinnerungsarbeit in der deutschen, österreichischen und hebräischen Literatur nach 1945 zu rekonstruieren, indem die Verwendungsweise musikalischer Diskurse als Grundlage einer Erzählkunst exemplarischer Texte geprüft wird. Der Aufsatz widmet sich den folgenden Romanen: Die 'Blechtrommel' (1959) von Günter Grass, 'Malina' (1971) von Ingeborg Bachmann, 'Beton' (1982) und 'Auslöschung' (1986) von Thomas Bernhard, 'Rosendorf Quartett' (1987) und 'Der Schatten von Rosendorf' (2001) von Nathan Shacham, 'Vom Wasser' (1998) von John von Düffel und 'Die Katze und der Schmetterling' (2001) von Yoel Hoffmann.
