This essay collection rediscovers and reassesses a host of still little-known, pre-1914, Welsh women writers.

In the last few decades considerable advances have been made towards rediscovering, contextualising, and analysing women’s writing from Wales. The combined influences of the post-1960s women’s movement, the 1990s Welsh devolution successes, and the development of the ‘Four Nations’ school of British literary criticism, have together effected significant advances in the field of Welsh feminist literary studies. This book focuses in particular on: the fifteenth- to eighteenth-century Welsh-language bards, such as Gwerful Mechain, Angharad James, and Marged Dafydd; the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English-language poets, including Katherine Philips, Jane Brereton, Anne Penny, and Anne Hughes; contributors to the Romantic movement in Wales, such as the poets and novelists Mary Robinson and Ann of Swansea; the mid-nineteenth-century protesting voice of polemicists such as Jane Williams (Ysgafell); the Victorian English-language novelists, for example Louisa Matilda Spooner, Anne Beale, Amy Dillwyn, Allen Raine, and Mallt Williams, and their concern with national, class, and gender identities; and early twentieth-century Welsh-language writers engaged with Welsh Home Rule and women’s suffrage issues, such as Gwyneth Vaughan and Eluned Morgan.

Welsh Gothic, the first study of its kind, introduces readers to the array of Welsh Gothic literature published from 1780 to the present day. Informed by postcolonial and psychoanalytic theory, it argues that many of the fears encoded in Welsh Gothic writing are specific to the history of Welsh people, telling us much about the changing ways in which Welsh people have historically seen themselves and been perceived by others. The first part of the book explores Welsh Gothic writing from its beginnings in the last decades of the eighteenth century to 1997. The second part focuses on figures specific to the Welsh Gothic genre who enter literature from folk lore and local superstition, such as the sin-eater, cwn Annwn (hellhounds), dark druids and Welsh witches.

The study of borders has recently undergone significant transitions, reflecting changes in the functions of boundaries themselves, as the world political map has experienced transformations. Gender (defined as the knowledge about perceived distinctions between the sexes) is an important signifier of borders as constructed and contested lines of differences. In the interplay with other categories of difference, such as class, race, ethnicity and religion, it plays a major role in giving meaning to different forms of borders. It is not surprising, then, that an increasing number of studies in the last years have aimed for a gendering of border studies. This book aims to explore this new interdisciplinary field and develop it further. The main questions it asks are: how do we define â€borders’, â€frontiers’ and â€boundaries’ in different disciplinary approaches of gendered border studies? What were and are the main fields of gendered border studies? What might be important questions for future research? And how useful is an inter- or transdisciplinary approach for gendered border studies? Fifteen established scholars from various disciplines contribute chapters in which they set out how the issue of gender and borders has been approached in their discipline and describe what they expect from future research. After a detailed introduction presenting these issues, the book is divided into four sections: migration and gender; gendered narratives of border crossing; gender and the drawing of internal boundaries, and teaching gendered borders.

The study of borders has recently undergone significant transitions, reflecting the transformation of the world political map as well as the changes in the ways boundaries themselves function. In Gendering Border Studies sixteen established scholars from a variety of disciplines examine how the issue of gender and borders has been approached in their field and describe what they expect from future research. This book will be of interest to scholars of border studies, gender studies, social anthropology, international politics, comparative literature, and Welsh studies.

"'I baked the bread made you mortal. For mortal your had to be. Same as myself, fach. No different,see?... When I'm gone, you'll be taking my place quite natural... A chain o' women. All alike. Every link. That life may hold unbroken.' So a dying woman addresses her supernatural daughter-in-law. For this is the old folk tale of the Lady of Llyn y Fan Fach, the fairy bride lured from her underwater home to become a farmer's wife on the Brecon Beacons. Iron and Gold's retelling of the myth makes of it a psychological study in the nature of marriage and the social construction of gender roles. As the bride struggles to adapt herself, and sees her gold worn away under the iron pressure of conformity, both her difference and her acquired familiarity eventually breed martial breakdown and tragedy. But the human yearning for strange beauty, disruptive though it may be, remains poignantly alive throughout the novel.
