A Four Act Scandal in Post-war Germany The paper explores the dramaturgy of the scandals around the play Garbage, The City and Death (Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod) by German playwright, theatre and film maker Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Published in 1976, the play immediately caused a scandal in West Germany, because it was accused of reproducing anti-Semitic stereotypes. The presentation sheds light on the different phases of the scandal and their historical and cultural contexts in post-war Germany – starting as a literary scandal in 1976, being transformed into a theatre scandal in the 1980ies and finally being dissolved by the German premiere in 2009. The paper is structured as follows: Act One: The Literary Scandal. Destroying Fassbinder’s Garbage, Act Two: Preventing the Staging of the Play, Act Three: Blocking the Opening Night, Act Four: Performing the Play in Germany. By analysing the dramaturgical structure of this specific scandal, the paper discusses the following hypotheses: 1. Scandals arise through the circulation of decontextualised information in public. This is due to either a lack of information about the actual object or incident being scandalised or a lack of information about the context of the object or incident. This lack is caused by the logic of the scandal itself: Because the play or the performance is prohibited, it has been withdrawn from the public, making it impossible to form a well-founded opinion on the controversy. 2. The scandal is driven forward by an emotionalising rhetoric built around the decontextualised information. 3. Once the gap of information is filled, the scandalising rhetoric turns into a rhetoric of irrelevance: Reviews of the first performance of Garbage, The City and Death in Germany considered the play hardly a matter of public concern.

In the 1980ies and 1990ies he produced several films portraying the gay communities in Germany and the USA in the face of AIDS. First, this paper analyses the cinematic techniques von Praunheim uses to criticise the German gay community and present the American practices of performing community as a role model for AIDS-activism. In a second step, the focus is put on von Praunheim’s autobiography and the rhetoric strategies he uses to participate in New York’s HIV-community, while being HIV-negative himself.

    Other ; Background The paper sheds light on the development of the cultural representation of HIV/AIDS in Germany, Austria and Switzerland from the 1980ies until present. It analyses the contribution of literature, theatre, and film to the public discourse about HIV/AIDS and characterises the rhetorical and iconographic strategies used to construct, represent, and discuss the disease and deal with it. The presentation shows which functions literature, theatre and film have performed within the HIV/AIDS discourse during the last 30 years in German speaking countries. Methods Having a background in Cultural Studies, Theatre Studies and German Studies the study uses methods from these disciplines to analyse the reception of aesthetic strategies – the ‘what’ and ‘how’ – of literary, theatrical and cinematic representations of HIV/AIDS on a micro level. On a macro level interdiscourse analysis (Jürgen Link) and sociological systems theory (Niklas Luhmann) are applied to describe the dramaturgical development of the HIV/AIDS discourse in German speaking countries. Results The public HIV/AIDS discourse in German speaking countries can be divided into seven stages characterised by different dominant modes of representing HIV/AIDS: exclusion and blame, prevention, integration, refuse of integration, apocalyptic scenarios, thrill, and normalisation. The dramaturgy of the HIV/AIDS discourse is initialised by the occurrence of the new disease in the 1980ies. In the first years it followed the pattern of historical epidemic discourses (plague, leprosy, syphilis). Since then, two major plotpoints have changed the structure of the discourse altogether: the discovery of the HI-Virus and the introduction of combined antiretroviral therapy. In the 21st century HIV/AIDS starts to become normalised. Nevertheless discrimination patterns known from the HIV/AIDS discourse of the 1980ies can be found again in medial representations. Conclusions The paper discusses the complex relationship between cultural and medical communication in the face of HIV/AIDS. Literature, theatre, and film perform different functions dealing with the disease: 1. feeding rhetorical and iconographic representations into the public discourse 2. observing and documenting the discourse about HIV/AIDS in the mass media 3. intervening in the public discourse through criticism or alternative interpretations 4. offering coping / passing strategies and strategies of assigning meaning to the disease.

    The papers presented in this book originate from an international symposium, “Architecture as Cosmology: Lincoln Cathedral and Bishop Robert Grosseteste (1235–53),” hosted by Lincoln Cathedral on the 21st and 22nd January 2012, and funded by the Paul Mellon Education Programme and the Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of Lincoln. Supported by the Bishop and Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral, the symposium (and subsequent published work) constitute the culmination of a more extended research project begun by Nicholas Temple in 2003 and published in his Disclosing Horizons: Architecture, Perspective and Redemptive Space (Routledge, 2007), and further developed by John Hendrix in his two books, Robert Grosseteste: Philosophy of Intellect and Vision (Academia Verlag, 2010) and Architecture as Cosmology: Lincoln Cathedral and English Gothic Architecture (Peter Lang Publishing, 2011). The papers in this volume develop, or challenge, the arguments presented in these earlier publications and research projects, by examining relationships between the scientific and cosmological ideas of Robert Grosseteste and the design and symbolism of Lincoln Cathedral. The central area of contention, in the chapters of this edited volume, is whether the cathedral (famous for its rose windows and innovative Gothic design) actually influenced the cosmological theories of its bishop, in particular his highly original theories of light and geometry. Contributors to the volume include many eminent historians and architectural theorists (who also presented papers at the international symposium), such as Professor Cecilia Panti (authority on Grosseteste and Medieval optics, and Professor Dalibor Vesely (renowned architectural theorist and philosopher) and Professor Christian Frost (noted authority of Salisbury Cathedral).

    Die Kategorie der Zwei Spanien wird als heuristisches Hilfsmittel in den europäischen Geisteswissenschaften immer dann verwendet, wenn Konflikte auf der Iberischen Halbinsel zu beschreiben beziehungsweise zu erklären sind – seien diese nun historisch, aktuell, sozial, politisch oder künstlerisch. Der zu erwartende Erkenntnisgewinn freilich ist gering. Denn bei den Zwei Spanien handelt es sich weder um ein soziohistorisches Faktum der spanischen Geschichte, noch um eine belastbare wissenschaftliche Kategorie. Die Zwei Spanien sind in Wahrheit ein politischer Mythos, dessen ungebrochene Gegenwart in der Forschung zu Spanien die Erkenntnis neuer und komplexer Zusammenhänge weit mehr behindert, als dass sie sie fördern würde. Es ist an der Zeit, sich von einer griffigen, aber äußerst problematischen Kategorie des Denkens und Schreibens über Spanien zu verabschieden. Die Rede von den Zwei Spanien sollte Gegenstand, nicht Werkzeug der Forschung sein. Der vorliegende Aufsatz entwickelt schrittweise eine grundsätzliche Kritik an der Kategorie der Zwei Spanien, illustriert deren begrenztes analytisches Potential anhand von Beispielen und weist nach, dass es sich bei ihr tatsächlich um einen politischen Mythos im wissenschaftlichen Sinne des Begriffs handelt.

Der berüchtigte Aphorismus sollte Historikerinnen und Historiker nicht von der Beschäftigung mit "Monstern" und dem "Monströsen" abhalten, versprechen diese doch zahlreiche Einsichten. Auch wenn nicht jeder gleich eine eigene Disziplin der "Monster Studies" anstreben wird, wie Mittman es in seiner programmatischen Einleitung mit Augenzwinkern formuliert (S. 1f.), eröffnet ein teratologischer Blick der kulturhistorischen Analyse originelle und weiterführende Perspektiven auf normative Diskurse und Selbstzuschreibungen. Monster mögen aus modern-rationalistischer Sicht nicht zuletzt als Wesen erscheinen, die ein lediglich imaginiertes Dasein führen (so ein Vorschlag für einen "Minimalkonsens", mit dem Dendle sein Fazit enden lässt, S. 448), aber dies macht sie doch keineswegs zu rein imaginären Wesen. Vielmehr spiegeln sie in subversiver Unterwanderung die Bruchstellen und Probleme, die jeder Komplex identitärer Selbstzuschreibungen angesichts systemisch nicht integrierbarer Kontingenzen aufweist.

    Häufig wird angenommen, man sei dort "zu Hause", wo man geboren wurde. Man könnte etwa sagen: "Hier! Hier bin ich zur Welt gekommen", und mit diesen Worten wäre impliziert, dass man sich keinen vertrauteren, wertvolleren und intimeren Ort vorzustellen vermag. Dieser Ort wäre, anders ausgedrückt, der Ort, wo man hingehört. Der Ort, an dem man geboren wurde, ist jedoch willkürlich. Menschen wurden im Exil geboren oder auch neben Straßensperren. Tatsächlich hat kein Mensch Einfluss auf die Umstände der eigenen Geburt. Der eigene Geburtsort bedeutet also nur auf indirekte Weise Zugehörigkeit. In Wirklichkeit bezeichnet nichts mehr Zugehörigkeit als ein Grab. Ein Grab ist ein fester Ort, auf den man zeigen und dabei feststellen kann: "Hier liegen mein Vater und seine Vorfahren begraben, und hier werde auch ich eines Tages begraben sein." Es ist der Ort, den man häufig für sich selbst auswählen kann, wo das Menschliche schließlich eins mit der Erde wird. Diese grundlegende Einheit des Belebten und Unbelebten veranlasste etwa Giambattista Vico zu der Aussage, in früheren, primitiveren und prosaischeren Zeiten sei der Grabstein ein rechtliches Gebilde. "So zeigten schon durch die Gräber ihrer Bestatteten die Giganten die Herrschaft über ihrer Ländereien an; [.] Und zu Recht", bemerkte Vico, "gebrauchten sie jene heroischen Redensarten: 'wir sind Söhne dieser Erde', 'wir sind geboren aus diesen Eichen' [.]." Somit gehört man nicht an den Ort, an dem man geboren wurde, sondern dorthin, wo man zur letzten Ruhe gebettet wird. Manche Menschen besitzen mehr als nur einen Grabstein. Gershom Scholem ist einer von ihnen - eine merkwürdige Tatsache. Dem Anschein nach gehört Scholem, wenn er überhaupt irgendwohin gehört, nach Jerusalem.

    Der Mediävist Peter Wapnewski hatte seine Hörer, seine Leser des unvergleichlichen Glanzes der Dichtung zur Zeit der Staufer versichert, hatte nach der Schändung der deutschen Kultur durch die Nationalsozialisten wieder die Herkunft, das Werden, die Schönheit der ersten deutschen Sprache gegenwärtig gemacht. Wollten die Deutschen ihr Land wiederaufbauen, so sollten sie ihre Sprache in der Dichtung gereinigt als Anspruch an ihr eigenes Leben wiederfinden. Das Thomas Mann verbundene Wort vom "Adel des Geistes" bewahrte Wapnewski, hanseatisch geprägt auch er durch seine Jugend in Kiel, 1922 dort geboren. Der zwölf Jahre jüngere Karlheinz Barck, in Quedlinburg aufgewachsen, den Harz im Rücken, maß als Romanist den Sprachraum aus, den Baudelaire, den Lautréamont und Rimbaud vor und nach der Pariser Commune gewonnen hatten, um dieses Potential, das die Surrealisten zur Welt machten, als einen Handlungsraum in der geschlossenen DDR zu begreifen und einzusetzen: Rimbauds Aufforderung zur "Entgrenzung aller Sinne" folgend. Was sie beide über die in ihren Texten und Büchern vermittelte Freude an ihren Entdeckungen hinaus auszeichnete, war ihr Einsatz für die anderen, die Vermittlung, das Interesse an der Auseinandersetzung. Sie verliehen zwei in Berlin neu gegründeten akademischen Instituten die spezifische Prägung durch ihr jeweils eigenes Vermögen, Geistes- wie Naturwissenschaftler und Künstler zusammenzuführen. Mit dem Wirken an diesen Instituten erfüllte sich ihre Lebensaufgabe.
