Archives ; ar Sites about Persons ; au Teaching Materials ; le "Susanna Moodie and Catharine Parr Traill are two of Canada's most important 19th-century writers. Born in England only 23 months apart, the two sisters became professional writers before they married. In 1832 they emigrated with their Scottish husbands to Canada, settling in the backwoods of what is now Ontario, near present-day Lakefield. This website is designed to help readers and students enter into the worlds of these two remarkable sisters. First, it conveniently brings together important collections held by both the National Library of Canada and the National Archives of Canada. Secondly, it provides the reader with reliable information about Susanna, Catharine, their lives and their writing careers. Thirdly, it makes available some of their surviving letters and selections from their books."

Libraries ; lb Sites about Persons ; au Virtual Exhibitions ; at "The Special Collection of photos, diaries, letters, and books from the life of Bessie Beatty was collected by professor Norman Cohen as research for a biography of her life. The result of his extensive efforts is a large collection that illustrates the life of a journalist, writer, activist, and radio host who went to Occidental College from 1903-1906. Her story is known by few people today, but in her day she associated with everyone from Eleanor Roosevelt to Vladimir Lenin and travelled around the world. She has a biographical entry in the Soviet Encyclopedia and her articles appear in publications from 'Good Housekeeping' to the 'Nation'. She devoted herself to numerous causes, including women's suffrage, unions, and support of the troops in World War II. She was a remarkable woman who exceeded the stereotypes of women of her time."

(Current) Research Projects ; fp "Jane Austen's fiction manuscripts are the first significant body of holograph evidence surviving for any British novelist. They represent every stage of her writing career and a variety of physical states: working drafts, fair copies, and handwritten publications for private circulation. The manuscripts were held in a single collection until 1845, when at her sister Cassandra's death they were dispersed among family members, with a second major dispersal, to public institutions and private collections, in the 1920s. Digitization enables their virtual reunification and will provides scholars with the first opportunity to make simultaneous ocular comparison of their different physical and conceptual states; it will facilitate intimate and systematic study of Austen's working practices across her career, a remarkably neglected area of scholarship within the huge, world-wide Austen critical industry."

Libraries ; lb Archives ; ar Virtual Exhibitions ; at 'Gabrielle Roy (1909-1983) is one of the most important writers in 20th-century Canadian literature. Achieving equal recognition in Quebec and English Canada, her work belongs to the literature of both cultures, and transcends national and linguistic boundaries. In the exhibition, archival records, artifacts, books and tributes show the various stages of the life of Gabrielle Roy. They illustrate how, over the years, writing gradually became the author's raison d'être, how the creative process transformed her life into an inner journey and how her work found its full expression in the simplicity and luminous quality of her autobiographical writings.'
