    Traces the history of racial caricature and the ways that Black cartoonists have turned this visual grammar on its headRevealing the long aesthetic tradition of African American cartoonists who have made use of racist caricature as a black diasporic art practice, Rebecca Wanzo demonstrates how these artists have resisted histories of visual imperialism and their legacies. Moving beyond binaries of positive and negative representation, many black cartoonists have used caricatures to criticize constructions of ideal citizenship in the United States, as well as the alienation of African Americans from such imaginaries. The Content of Our Caricature urges readers to recognize how the wide circulation of comic and cartoon art contributes to a common language of both national belonging and exclusion in the United States.Historically, white artists have rendered white caricatures as virtuous representations of American identity, while their caricatures of African Americans are excluded from these kinds of idealized discourses. Employing a rich illustration program of color and black-and-white reproductions, Wanzo explores the works of artists such as Sam Milai, Larry Fuller, Richard "Grass" Green, Brumsic Brandon Jr., Jennifer Cruté, Aaron McGruder, Kyle Baker, Ollie Harrington, and George Herriman, all of whom negotiate and navigate this troublesome history of caricature. The Content of Our Caricature arrives at a gateway to understanding how a visual grammar of citizenship, and hence American identity itself, has been constructed

Sowohl die Rezeption als auch die Analyse von Heftromanen kann zur Aneignung fiktionaler Weltbilder führen. Doch welche Rolle spielen die antiquiert anmutenden Heftromane in Zeiten medialer Vielfalt, wenn es darum geht, aus soziologischer Perspektive Erkenntnisse über das Funktionieren der Welt zu gewinnen? Birgit Panke-Kochinke, Historikerin, Soziologin sowie Expertin für qualitative Methoden der Sozialforschung, skizziert den aktuellen Forschungsstand und entwickelt Perspektiven für eine zukünftige Forschung. Magazine novels serve as a model for a whole range of media products on the entertainment market. Understanding fiction as part of a reality that can be enjoyed without regret is what makes up the entertainment function of this genre. Both the reception and the analysis of magazine novels can lead to the appropriation of fictional world views. But what role do the seemingly antiquated dime novels play in times of media diversi-ty when it comes to gaining insights into the functioning of the world from a sociological perspective? Birgit Panke-Kochinke, historian, sociologist and expert in qualitative methods of social research, outlines the current state of research and develops perspectives for future research.

Die Beiträge dieses Bandes befassen sich mit der Inszenierung von Mission in Romanen und Filmen. Dabei zeigen sich verbindende Motive wie etwa das der Grenzüberschreitung, der Begegnung mit dem »Fremden«, des Scheiterns oder der Auseinandersetzung mit Kolonialismus und Macht. Gleichzeitig bleibt in der Spannung von Fiktion und Faktizität, Story und History das Verständnis von Mission offen und entzieht sich klassischen historischen, religionswissenschaftlichen und interkulturell-theologischen Deutungsmustern. Mit Beiträgen von Michael Biehl, Daniel Cyranka, Katharina Döbler, Moritz Fischer, Andreas Heuser, Klaus Hock, Claudia Jahnel, Klaus-Dieter Kaiser, Doris Kriegel, Anita Martin, Ulrike Sallandt und Georg Seeßlen. Mission continues to be in vogue in film and literature – whether explicitly as in Scorsese’s »Silence« (2016) or in the Netflix remake of »Black Narcissus« (2020), whether en passant as in »The Sand Pebbles« (1966) or implicitly as in Herzog’s »Nomad: In the Footsteps of Bruce Chatwin«. The contributions in this volume deal with the staging of mission in novels and films. They reveal shared motifs such as the crossing of borders, the encounter with the »other«, failure or the confrontation with colonialism and power. At the same time, in the tension between fiction and fact, story and history, the understanding of mission remains open and eludes classical historical, religious studies and intercultural-theological patterns of interpretation. Jahrhunderts, mit dem kulturelles Wissen ko-konstruiert, gespeichert und in ganz Europa verbreitet wurde. Die Autorin erschließt das spectatoriale - d.h. das in den Periodika auftretende Geschlechterwissen und erforscht Konstruktion, Verbreitung und Wandel der stereotypen Diskurse über Frauen und Männer in den französisch- und spanischsprachigen Wochenschriften. Wie sich zeigt, haben die geschlechtsspezifischen Diskurse der Aufklärung bis heute nichts an ihrer Aktualität und Wirkung verloren.

    Drawing on the theories of cultural studies, this study investigates the “Golden Age” of comic books in context of the broader power struggles of their time. It traces the comic-book medium’s cultural roots, its rise to popularity, and its persistent struggles for meanings, cultural space, and an audience. Characters, genres, stereotypes, myths, styles, reflexive devices, and many other narrative elements are discussed as encodings of ideology within the systems of production, consumption, and textuality. ; Basierend auf den Theorien der Cultural Studies untersucht diese Studie das "goldene Zeitalter" der Comic-Hefte im Kontext der Machtkämpfe ihrer Zeit. Sie zeichnet die kulturellen Wurzeln des Mediums, seine Erfolgsgeschichte und sein andauerndes Ringen um Bedeutung, kulturellen Raum und Publikum nach.     Media depictions of Arabs and Muslims continue to be framed by images of camels, belly dancers, and dagger-wearing terrorists. But do only Hollywood movies and TV news have the power to frame public discourse? This interdisciplinary study transfers media framing theory to literary studies to show how life writing (re-)frames Orientalist stereotypes. The innovative analysis of the post-9/11 autobiographies "West of Kabul, East of New York", "Letters from Cairo", and "Howling in Mesopotamia" makes a powerful claim to approach literature based on a theory of production and reception, thus enhancing the multi-disciplinary potential of framing theory.

    'Dieser Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit Spezifika nationaler Vertretung durch österreichische Skistars. Als Ausgangspunkt dient die These, dass im Vergleich zu politischer Repräsentation, die oft unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Inszenierung betrachtet wird, gerade die Zuschreibung 'authentischer Vertretungsverhältnisse' die wintersportliche Repräsentation vielfach auszeichnet und diese für die Welt der Politik attraktiv macht. Als Quellenmaterial dienen das populäre Genre der SportlerInnen-Biographie und deren formelhafte Sinngebungen von sportlichen Siegen und Misserfolgen (folk tales). Konkret betrachtet werden auf diese Weise die medialen Repräsentationen österreichischer Skistars, ihre Kontinuitäten und Veränderungen von Toni Sailer in den späten 1950er-Jahren bis zu seinen späten Nachfolgern Hermann Maier und Stephan Eberharter.' (Autorenreferat) ; 'This article focuses on the specifics of national representation, based on Austrian alpine ski-stars. In contrast to political representation, which often is viewed under aspects of 'staging', we departure analytically from the hypothesis that winter-sports representation can be characterized as 'authentic', which again makes it attractive for politics. As sources of information we use biographies of athletes and the interpretation of their victories and defeats in the context of folk tales. The analysis reviews the media-based representation of Austrian ski-stars, continuities and changes from Toni Sailer, in the late 1950s, until his succeeding celebrities Hermann Maier and Stephan Eberharter.'
