Drawing on the generous semantic range the term enjoyed in early modern usage, Experimental Selves argues that 'person,' as early moderns understood this concept, was an 'experimental' phenomenon-at once a given of experience and the self-conscious arena of that experience. Person so conceived was discovered to be a four-dimensional creature: a composite of mind or 'inner' personality; of the body and outward appearance; of social relationship; and of time. Through a series of case studies keyed to a wide variety of social and cultural contexts, including theatre, the early novel, the art of portraiture, pictorial experiments in vision and perception, theory of knowledge, and the new experimental science of the late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the book examines the manifold shapes person assumed as an expression of the social, natural, and aesthetic 'experiments' or experiences to which it found itself subjected as a function of the mere contingent fact of just having them

To ask whether the postcolonial is postsecular demands asking for whom, where, and when? To that end, what follows is a reflection situated in two Canadian contexts, separated by time and place, but both connected to the 'colonial secular'. Engaged in the public deliberation and storytelling of civic secularism, through which political legitimacy is achieved through comparing religions, these two contexts are twenty-first century Québec and early-twentieth-century British Columbia. More specifically, I consider two moments in which the state (or its agents) exerted its authority in order to reshape bodily practice and stories of place: the debate over the 'secular charter' in Québec and the founding of the railway town of Prince Rupert on Tsimshian land. These acts of negotiation and law-making turned to religious forms of legitimation in a way that was at once ambivalent, comparative, and forgetful of the historical founding of the state's own power. That is, in forming their 'natural sovereignty' over others, states often forget that their claims to power are, in part, acts of pretending.

Derrida's The Death Penalty seminar puts capital punishment and the sovereign violence that administers it into the very center of the deconstructive enterprise. My essay emphasizes this connection, by arguing that the positive - messianic - stake of deconstruction is the philosophical defense of the finite life. In order to prove that, I will first focus on Derrida's notion of life as elaborated in his late writings, most of all “Faith and Knowledge,” then link it with his interpretation of Khora as the horizontal republic of the living, and finally, apply these concepts to my reading of The Death Penalty seminars, in which they will resurface as Derrida's fundamental confrontation with philosophy as the “discipline of death” to be counteracted only by the literary intervention of writers. I will claim that the gist of this intervention consists in arresting the sacrificial logic which life brings on itself while attempting to preserve itself, i.e., the aporetic logic of auto/immunity.

Politicians often mention immigration enforcement, and deportation in particular, as a means to assert state sovereignty. The scholarship on deportation in philosophy and political anthropology also names exclusion as a founding act of sovereignty. This paper looks at deportation through an event that is interpreted as regaining sovereignty by a State, that is exiting a supra-national political organization, namely the European Union. New immigration regulations in the UK are meant to end the EU Freedom of Movement and equalise the statuses of EU- and non-EU migrants in the UK. The research question this working paper addresses is the following: how will the new immigration regulations and policies affect the possibility of deportations of EU citizens in the UK? With the lens of Interpretive Policy Analysis, the working paper analyses primary sources, such as regulations, policy papers and policy implementation guidelines as well as expert interviews with immigration advisors. It concludes that the deportability of EU citizens will increase. Deportability of EU citizens will be differentiated, as rough sleepers, former convicts and irregular migrants may be first to be targeted with deportation and form a new deportspora.
