The purpose of this paper is to build a framework for the assessment of the fundamental value of house prices in the largest Ukrainian cities, as well as to identify the thresholds, the breach of which would signal a bubble. House price bubbles are detected using two approaches: ratios and regression analysis. Two variants of each method are considered. We calculate the price-to-rent and price-to-income ratios that can identify a possible over- or undervaluation of house prices. Then, we perform regression analyses by considering individual multi-factor models for each city and by using a pooled OLS model with panel data. The only pronounced and prolonged period of a house price bubble is the one that coincides with the Global Financial Crisis. The bubble signals produced by these methods are, on average, simultaneous and are in accordance with economic sense

Declining correspondence banking relationship was a major feature of the banking industry in the Member States of the West African Monetary Zone WAMZ from 2013 to 2016. This objective of this study, therefore, was to clarify our understanding of the drivers of declining corresponding banking relation in the WAMZ. To achieve this objective, we explored the main sources of de-risking in (WAMZ), using questionnaires administered to commercial banks. We document perceived antimoney laundering/combating the financing of terrorism (AML/CFT) concerns and commercial consideration on the part of correspondent banks as the main drivers of de-risking in the WAMZ. Other causes of de-risking include: high compliance and additional requirements demanded by correspondent banks in reflection of an upscale in the legal, regulatory and supervisory requirements in their (correspondent bank's) jurisdictions; lack of full compliance with pre-existing legal, supervisory and regulatory requirements by foreign financial institutions; barriers or bureaucratic nature of communication and information sharing, low level of disclosure on customers, low sovereign credit risk rating and low level of profitability of CBR services. In terms of impact, we noted that the phenomenon affected banks to carry out international wire transfer and some critical banking and money transfer services. The study recommends the need to strengthen existing regulatory and supervisory frameworks, in particular the AML/CFT regime in the Zone.

One of the potential avenues for former professional football players to pursue their career is to become a head coach of a club’s first team. An important question is how to best prepare for such a reconversion. This letter is the first in the academic literature quantifying the association between success as a professional head coach and prior experience of former professional players as a youth coach, player-coach, head coach at a lower division, assistant coach, in other staff positions and in club management positions. Our regression analyses, based on unique coach career data, show a significant positive association for the jobs of assistant or youth coach.

In this article, we developed a reliable method to detect house price bubbles using data for the largest Ukrainian cities. Further, we identified the thresholds, the breach of which is signaling that house price growth may be problematic as a bubble may be forming. In this paper, house price bubbles are detected with the help of two general approaches: ratio calculation and regression analysis. These general approaches are subdivided into two each. We calculated the Price-to-Rent and Price-to-Income ratios that can identify a possible over- or undervaluation of house prices for Ukrainian cities under the scope of this investigation. Then, we performed the regression analysis by building individual multifactor models for different cities and by running a pooled OLS regression for the panel data. According to the results, the only pronounced and prolonged period of house price bubbles is the one that coincides in time with the Global Financial Crisis - from late 2005 to early 2009. The bubble signals, produced by these methods are, on average, simultaneous and are in accordance with economic sense. A tool for measuring fundamental house prices and an indicator of bubble on housing markets will be used to monitor the systemic risks stemming from the real estate market. Thus, it will help the National Bank of Ukraine maintain financial stability.

The COVID-19 pandemic showed that many developing countries could not respond effectively to crises due to their limited capacity to diversify their social protection responses. Social protection systems depend mainly on government tax revenue capacity. Raising domestic revenue still represents a priority for most sub-Saharan African countries, which continue to face high tax non-compliance. This research investigates whether there is a link between citizens' perceptions of governance and individual tax compliance in sub-Saharan Africa. We employ a logistic regression model and use Round 7 of the Afrobarometer, whichcontains information on Africans' views on democracy, governance, economic reform, civil society, and quality of life for 32 countries. Furthermore, in addition to a regression analysis, the study proposes a binary mediation analysis to investigate the direct and indirect effects of governance perception on individual tax compliance, with trust in institutions serving as a mediator. The main results suggest that perceptions of governance and attitudes towards tax compliance are positively associated, and their impact differs by country.

This study considers how household composition influences the leisure time of men and women in South Africa, using the South African 2010 Time Use Survey. Studying leisure time is important since the allocation of time outside the market provides insights into market behaviour and physical and mental health. Household composition and leisure consumption are highly gendered, with women typically living in larger households and consuming less leisure than men. Regression analysis shows that leisure time allocations are highly dependent on who lives in the household and Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition analysis finds that gender differences in mean leisure time can be attributed to household members, affecting the leisure time of male and female respondents differently. Overall, the results are consistent with traditional gender roles within the household and highlight the lack of intra-household bargaining power for women, providing evidence of gender inequality. Lower leisure consumption for women may have negative implications for their productivity in terms of paid and unpaid work, and for their well-being.
