Each text is accompanied by a commentary placing its contribution in critical context. Ideal for use in undergraduate seminars, this reader may also be of interest for academic researchers in the areas of literary studies and history aiming to get an overview of historical questions in biographical theory. This revised and updated English language edition also includes new translations of texts by J. G. Herder and Stefan Zweig, as well as an introductory discussion on the possibility of a ‘theory of biography’.     Der jüdische Kanadier George Ellenbogen (*1934) und die arabische US-Amerikanerin Evelyn Shakir (1938–2010) sind als Schriftsteller, Literaturprofessoren und Partner einen gemeinsamen Lebensweg gegangen. In ihren Memoiren erzählen die beiden Autoren von Nachbarschaft, bereichernden Begegnungen und der Suche nach Wurzeln. George wächst im jüdischen Einwandererviertel von Montreal auf, geht auf die McGill Universität und reist später an die Orte seiner Vorfahren, die in der Shoah vernichtete Welt des Schtetls. Evelyn fühlt sich in ihrer Kindheit in Boston oft als Araberin wahrgenommen und nicht ganz zugehörig. Als Gastprofessorin in arabischen Ländern wird sie hingegen von ihren Studierenden als Amerikanerin gesehen. Die Memoiren, drei begleitende Aufsätze und ein Interview mit George Ellenbogen werfen grundsätzliche Fragen hinsichtlich Heimat und Fremdheit, kultureller Verortung und dem Streben nach gegenseitigem Verständnis und Respekt auf. Nicht zuletzt spricht das Buch Lehrende an, die ihre Veranstaltungen zu einer Kontaktzone machen wollen, in der unterschiedliche Kulturen und Perspektiven aufeinandertreffen und in einen Dialog zueinander treten. Mit Beiträgen von George Ellenbogen; Pascal Fischer, Christoph Houswitschka; Sally Michael Hanna; John Kinsella; Margueritte Murphy; Evelyn Shakir (†); Brigitte Wallinger-Schorn The Jewish-Canadian and Arab-American writers and professors of literature George Ellenbogen (*1934) and Evelyn Shakir (1938–2010) were life companions. In both their memoirs, the authors tell stories of neighborhood, enriching encounters and their search for roots. George grows up in the Jewish immigrant quarter of Montreal, goes to McGill University, and later travels to the places of his ancestors, the destroyed world of the shtetl. In her Boston childhood, Evelyn is perceived as an Arab who does not entirely belong. As visiting professor in Arab countries, however, her students see her as an American. The memoirs, three related articles, and an interview with George Ellenbogen raise basic questions of belonging and otherness, cultural location and the pursuit of mutual understanding and respect. The volume also appeals to teachers who want to turn their lessons into contact zones in which different cultures and perspectives collide and enter into mutual dialogue.     Der jüdische Kanadier George Ellenbogen (*1934) und die arabische US-Amerikanerin Evelyn Shakir (1938–2010) sind als Schriftsteller, Literaturprofessoren und Partner einen gemeinsamen Lebensweg gegangen. In ihren Memoiren erzählen die beiden Autoren von Nachbarschaft, bereichernden Begegnungen und der Suche nach Wurzeln. George wächst im jüdischen Einwandererviertel von Montreal auf, geht auf die McGill Universität und reist später an die Orte seiner Vorfahren, die in der Shoah vernichtete Welt des Schtetls. Evelyn fühlt sich in ihrer Kindheit in Boston oft als Araberin wahrgenommen und nicht ganz zugehörig. Als Gastprofessorin in arabischen Ländern wird sie hingegen von ihren Studierenden als Amerikanerin gesehen. Die Memoiren, drei begleitende Aufsätze und ein Interview mit George Ellenbogen werfen grundsätzliche Fragen hinsichtlich Heimat und Fremdheit, kultureller Verortung und dem Streben nach gegenseitigem Verständnis und Respekt auf. In her Boston childhood, Evelyn is perceived as an Arab who does not entirely belong. As visiting professor in Arab countries, however, her students see her as an American. The memoirs, three related articles, and an interview with George Ellenbogen raise basic questions of belonging and otherness, cultural location and the pursuit of mutual understanding and respect. The volume also appeals to teachers who want to turn their lessons into contact zones in which different cultures and perspectives collide and enter into mutual dialogue.     Der jüdische Kanadier George Ellenbogen (*1934) und die arabische US-Amerikanerin Evelyn Shakir (1938–2010) sind als Schriftsteller, Literaturprofessoren und Partner einen gemeinsamen Lebensweg gegangen. In ihren Memoiren erzählen die beiden Autoren von Nachbarschaft, bereichernden Begegnungen und der Suche nach Wurzeln. George wächst im jüdischen Einwandererviertel von Montreal auf, geht auf die McGill Universität und reist später an die Orte seiner Vorfahren, die in der Shoah vernichtete Welt des Schtetls. Evelyn fühlt sich in ihrer Kindheit in Boston oft als Araberin wahrgenommen und nicht ganz zugehörig. Als Gastprofessorin in arabischen Ländern wird sie hingegen von ihren Studierenden als Amerikanerin gesehen. Die Memoiren, drei begleitende Aufsätze und ein Interview mit George Ellenbogen werfen grundsätzliche Fragen hinsichtlich Heimat und Fremdheit, kultureller Verortung und dem Streben nach gegenseitigem Verständnis und Respekt auf. Nicht zuletzt spricht das Buch Lehrende an, die ihre Veranstaltungen zu einer Kontaktzone machen wollen, in der unterschiedliche Kulturen und Perspektiven aufeinandertreffen und in einen Dialog zueinander treten. Mit Beiträgen von George Ellenbogen; Pascal Fischer, Christoph Houswitschka; Sally Michael Hanna; John Kinsella; Margueritte Murphy; Evelyn Shakir (†); Brigitte Wallinger-Schorn The Jewish-Canadian and Arab-American writers and professors of literature George Ellenbogen (*1934) and Evelyn Shakir (1938–2010) were life companions. In both their memoirs, the authors tell stories of neighborhood, enriching encounters and their search for roots. George grows up in the Jewish immigrant quarter of Montreal, goes to McGill University, and later travels to the places of his ancestors, the destroyed world of the shtetl. In her Boston childhood, Evelyn is perceived as an Arab who does not entirely belong. As visiting professor in Arab countries, however, her students see her as an American. The memoirs, three related articles, and an interview with George Ellenbogen raise basic questions of belonging and otherness, cultural location and the pursuit of mutual understanding and respect. The volume also appeals to teachers who want to turn their lessons into contact zones in which different cultures and perspectives collide and enter into mutual dialogue.     The life of the composer Dmitri Shostakovich features in several contemporary anglophone bio-fictions, both novels and film, raising the question of the larger implications of Shostakovich’s life in art today. In my paper, I aim to address how such Shostakovich bio-fictions reinvent the composer’s creative labour in the context of World War II, Stalinist and post-Stalinist politics. Shostakovich’s life as artist and man appears torn between fear of persecution, social commitment, and the claim of individual, aesthetic autonomy tied to a controversial degree of political dissent. In Western eyes, the Soviet composer thus epitomizes the transnational figure of the twentieth-century artist – compromised, yet achieving an expression of his personal voice, creating an emphatically modern art that is bound to its times and yet ultimately eludes both the dictates of politics and mimesis. ; Peer Reviewed
