    This book sprang from three handwritten lines by Ivan Bunin, Russia's first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature. Found inside a first edition of Mitya's Love, they led to the discovery of one of the largest corpora of letters written to Ivan and Vera Bunin by two people whose lives and legacy had been, until now, forgotten. These letters are now in the Russian Archive in Leeds (RAL), and are published here for the first time. The book also focuses on memory and history in its purest form, as narrated by witnesses who lived through the most tragic century in Russian history. Their stories involve Grand Dukes, Russian literary and political giants, as well as one of the architects of the Gulag, and show how these lives intertwined. It also sheds new light on the life and works of Chekhov, Gorky, A. Tolstoy, and Bunin

    Breaking Free from Death examines how Russian writers respond to the burden of living with anxieties about their creative outputs, and, ultimately, about their own inevitable finitude. What contributes to creative death are not just crippling diseases that make man defenseless in the face of death, and not just the arguably universal fear of death but, equally important, the innumerable impositions on the part of various outsiders. Many conflicts in the lives of Rylkova's subjects arose not from their opposition to the existing political regimes but from their interactions with like-minded and supporting intellectuals, friends, and relatives. The book describes the lives and choices that concrete individuals and-by extrapolation-their literary characters must face in order to preserve their singularity and integrity while attempting to achieve fame, greatness, and success

    Towards the end of the eighteenth century, Americans - along with their British cousins - began to include the Rhine and its famed scenery in their continental grand tour. Whereas English travelers and travel impressions are quite well remembered, the American contribution to the first century of Rhine tourism is much less documented. The present volume seeks to recover American encounters with the Rhine and bring back the voices of prominent transatlantic travelers - from Trumbull and Jefferson in the eighteenth century, to Cooper and Longfellow in the nineteenth, and on to Dreiser and Wolfe in the twentieth - through selections from their diaries, letters, and other travel accounts. However different their backgrounds and points of view, all these visitors are united in their praise of this historical region and its heritage. Their impressions are important elements in the American image of Germany in past and present.

    Literarische Nachlässe haben in den letzten Jahren einen qualitativen Zugangswechsel erfahren – sie sind zu einem literaturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchungsgegenstand eigenen Rechts avanciert. Damit drängen sich neue Fragen auf: nach dem Status von Werk und Nachlass, einem spezifischen Nachlassbewusstsein und der Rolle der Nachwelt.Unter dem Begriff der Nachlassformation führt die vorliegende Studie die verschiedenen Diskussionskomplexe zusammen, beschreibt den Nachlass als zugleich historisches sowie singulär-vielschichtiges Gebilde und entwickelt darauf aufbauend erstmals eine Analyse-Methodik zur Interpretation literarischer Archive. Anschließend findet der theoretische Ansatz Anwendung im Rahmen zweier groß angelegter Fallstudien zu dem Dichter Richard Leising und der Autorin Helga M. Novak. Die Auseinandersetzung mit ihrem Wirken im historischen Kontext von DDR und deutscher Zweistaatlichkeit provoziert eine für die Nachlassforschung zentrale Frage: Wie manifestiert sich das Spannungsverhältnis von Schreiben und literarischer Öffentlichkeit in der konkreten Nachlassformation?

    Literarische Nachlässe haben in den letzten Jahren einen qualitativen Zugangswechsel erfahren – sie sind zu einem literaturwissenschaftlichen Untersuchungsgegenstand eigenen Rechts avanciert. Damit drängen sich neue Fragen auf: nach dem Status von Werk und Nachlass, einem spezifischen Nachlassbewusstsein und der Rolle der Nachwelt. Unter dem Begriff der Nachlassformation führt die vorliegende Studie die verschiedenen Diskussionskomplexe zusammen, beschreibt den Nachlass als zugleich historisches sowie singulär-vielschichtiges Gebilde und entwickelt darauf aufbauend erstmals eine Analyse-Methodik zur Interpretation literarischer Archive. Anschließend findet der theoretische Ansatz Anwendung im Rahmen zweier groß angelegter Fallstudien zu dem Dichter Richard Leising und der Autorin Helga M. Novak. Die Auseinandersetzung mit ihrem Wirken im historischen Kontext von DDR und deutscher Zweistaatlichkeit provoziert eine für die Nachlassforschung zentrale Frage: Wie manifestiert sich das Spannungsverhältnis von Schreiben und literarischer Öffentlichkeit in der konkreten Nachlassformation?

    Von allen Briefwechseln, die Bernard Bolzano (1781–1848) führte, war der mit seinem Schüler und Freund Michael Josef Fesl (1788–1864) bei weitem der umfangreichste. Insgesamt tauschten die beiden etwa 730 Briefe aus. Da wegen der großen Zahl der Briefe in der Bernard-Bolzano-Gesamtausgabe ab dem Jahr 1831 nur noch die Briefe des Lehrers an seinen Schüler veröffentlicht werden, erscheinen die Briefe Fesls an Bolzano in den Beiträgen zur Bolzano-Forschung. Der vorliegende Band enthält Fesls Briefe der Jahre 1831–1836. Ihr Hauptthema sind Bolzanos Publikationsprojekte, darunter die Religionsbekenntnisse zweier Vernunftfreunde (1835), die Lebensbeschreibung (1836) und die Wissenschaftslehre (1837). Dazu kommt ein Austausch über die Zensur, über politische Ereignisse, über Cholera und andere Epidemien jener Zeit sowie über Heilmittel wie Homöopathie oder Kaltwasserkuren. Philosophische Fragen im eigentlichen Sinne spielen eine kleinere, aber nicht zu vernachlässigende Rolle. The most important and extensive of Bernard Bolzano’s (1781–1848) correspondences is the one with his student and friend Michael Josef Fesl (1788–1864) which comprises altogether some 730 letters. Due to the great number of letters, starting with 1831, only Bolzano’s contributions are contained in his Collected Writings. Therefore, Fesl’s letters to Bolzano are published in the series "Beiträge zur Bolzano-Forschung". The present volume contains Fesl’s letters from the years 1831 to 1836. They focus on Bolzano’s publication projects, particularly the "Religious Confessions of Two Friends of Reason" (1835), Bolzano’s "Autobiography" (1836) and his "Theory of Science" (1837). Moreover, censorship and other political affairs are discussed as well as epidemics of that time, like cholera and typhus, and remedies like homeopathy or cold water therapy. Philosophical questions are if minor concern but, nevertheless, play also some specific role.

    Since the late twentieth century, letters in literature have seen a remarkable renaissance. The prominence of letters in recent fiction is due in part to the rediscovery, by contemporary writers, of letters as an effective tool for rendering aspects of historicity, liminality, marginalization and the expression of subjectivity vis-à-vis an ‘other’; it is also due, however, to the artistically challenging inclusion of the new electronic media of communication into fiction.While studies of epistolary fiction have so far concentrated on the eighteenth century and on thematic concerns, this volume charts the epistolary renaissance in recent literature, entering new territory by also focusing on the aesthetic implications of the epistolary mode. In particular, the essays in this volume illuminate the potential of the epistolary (including digital forms) for rendering contemporary sensitivities. The volume thus offers a comprehensive assessment of letter narratives in contemporary literature. Through its focus on the aesthetic and structural aspects of new epistolary fiction, the inclusion of various narrative forms, and the consideration of both conventional letters and their new digital kindred, The Epistolary Renaissance offers novel insight into a multi-facetted (re)new(ed) genre

    Von allen Briefwechseln, die Bernard Bolzano (1781–1848) führte, war der mit seinem Schüler und Freund Michael Josef Fesl (1788–1864) bei weitem der umfangreichste. Insgesamt tauschten die beiden etwa 730 Briefe aus. Da wegen der großen Zahl der Briefe in der Bernard-Bolzano-Gesamtausgabe ab dem Jahr 1831 nur noch die Briefe des Lehrers an seinen Schüler veröffentlicht werden, erscheinen die Briefe Fesls an Bolzano in den Beiträgen zur Bolzano-Forschung. Der vorliegende Band enthält Fesls Briefe der Jahre 1831–1836. Ihr Hauptthema sind Bolzanos Publikationsprojekte, darunter die Religionsbekenntnisse zweier Vernunftfreunde (1835), die Lebensbeschreibung (1836) und die Wissenschaftslehre (1837). Dazu kommt ein Austausch über die Zensur, über politische Ereignisse, über Cholera und andere Epidemien jener Zeit sowie über Heilmittel wie Homöopathie oder Kaltwasserkuren. Philosophische Fragen im eigentlichen Sinne spielen eine kleinere, aber nicht zu vernachlässigende Rolle. The most important and extensive of Bernard Bolzano’s (1781–1848) correspondences is the one with his student and friend Michael Josef Fesl (1788–1864) which comprises altogether some 730 letters. Due to the great number of letters, starting with 1831, only Bolzano’s contributions are contained in his Collected Writings. Therefore, Fesl’s letters to Bolzano are published in the series "Beiträge zur Bolzano-Forschung". The present volume contains Fesl’s letters from the years 1831 to 1836. They focus on Bolzano’s publication projects, particularly the "Religious Confessions of Two Friends of Reason" (1835), Bolzano’s "Autobiography" (1836) and his "Theory of Science" (1837). Moreover, censorship and other political affairs are discussed as well as epidemics of that time, like cholera and typhus, and remedies like homeopathy or cold water therapy. Philosophical questions are if minor concern but, nevertheless, play also some specific role.

    The correspondence between Charles Dickens and Bernhard Tauchnitz (1816–1895), founder of the Tauchnitz Verlag in Leipzig, spans almost thirty years, between 1843 and 1870 – Dickens was one of the key authors in the Tauchnitz Edition, a series of books in English for Continental sale initiated in 1841. So far, only 29 of Dickens’s letters to Tauchnitz were known (and printed in the authoritative Pilgrim Edition), and none of the manuscripts could be consulted. In 1991, Gunter Böhnke discovered 34 of the original letters in Leipzig, of which 14 are unknown and seven others only in short extracts. This article briefly sketches the background of the relationship between Dickens and Tauchnitz, and reprints for the first time these 21 letters as transcribed from photocopies of the originals. In the footnotes, the other 22 known letters to Tauchnitz are also listed. As a whole, they illustrate Dickens’s interest in the publication of his works abroad (including payment for this, obviously), as well as his high regard for Tauchnitz. Among the personal information that can be glimpsed from the letters, the most interesting is probably Dickens’s son Charley’s two-year stay in Leipzig in 1853–4.
