This paper investigates how rural-urban income differentials interact with the risk coping motive to shape households' migration behavior. Using a model of migration behavior under agricultural income risk, our theoretical results suggest that while income differentials remain crucial in determining the migration decision, they are additionally determined by the agricultural income risk the household is facing. Empirical findings on Chinese farm households indicate that the incidence of migration as a risk coping mechanism is lower for households with a negative expected urban-to-rural income difference. Moreover, we find that, when these households care about the human capital of their children, their marginal utility of income increases as the educational performance of their children deteriorates, implying that, when migration is used as a risk coping strategy, households with lower educational performance of children may be more likely to send a parent for migration. This result also suggests that the best specification of the utility function to consider for these households is the non-separability between the household's earnings and their children's human capital.

Remittances from overseas can encourage human capital investment and improve educational outcomes in developing countries. Empirical studies, however, have shown mixed evidence at best. This paper uses a 5-year panel dataset that tracks the same 3,000 households and 8,000 individuals through time in all seven regions of the Kyrgyz Republic to examine the impact of remittances on the human capital formation of school-age children. After correcting for selection bias and other potential endogeneities with instrumental variables and fixed effects regressions, remittances are found to have negative impacts on human capital investment and educational achievement. The negative effects can be attributed in part to recipients' increased expenditure on durable goods and extended hours of child labor on farm work as a compensation for missing adult labor. Our finding calls for actions that mitigate the negative effects and incentivize families to spend remittances on education, including financial literacy education, better monitoring of farm labor hours of school-age children, and targeted investment to improve the quality of education services in the Kyrgyz Republic.

The European labor market allows for the border-free mobility of workers across 31 countries that cover most of the continent's population. However, rates of migration across European countries remain considerably lower than interstate migration in the United States, and spatial variation in terms of unemployment or income levels is larger. We document patterns of migration in Europe, which include a sizable migration from east to west in the last twenty years. An analysis of worker-level microdata provides some evidence for an international convergence in wage rates, and for modest static gains from migration. We conclude by discussing obstacles to migration that reduce the potential for further labor market integration in Europe.

As the country witnesses a steady export of its human resources, it becomes imperative to explore not only the immediate impacts of labor migration on the Philippine economy, but also its long-term consequences on both OFWs and the families they leave behind. This study examines the various effects of labor migration on OFWs and their families, including the economic benefits and social costs (e.g., family dynamics, child outcomes in terms of labor, health and education) of the diaspora, and what has government done to assist these modernday heroes. Remittances sent home by OFWs have become a major contributor to the Philippine economy, representing around 10% of GDP. This provides income for families and supports consumer spending. However, labor migration has led to divided families and complex transnational relationships between OFWs and their families in the Philippines. While remittances support loved ones, being miles away from loved ones can cause psychic pains. Findings from interviews with OFWs and their families also suggest that young OFWs dream of retiring early but may not be provided systematic support for financial literacy. The paper calls for strengthening reinforcement of legal frameworks, enhancing the labor market, improving social protection programs for OFWs and their families. equipping them with necessary skills to achieve financial sustainability, and regularly monitoring OFW conditions for evidence-informed policymaking.

(Autorenreferat) ; 'Conceiving of individual development as of change occurring in the patterns of a subject's relations to the world and to his or herself and brought about by coping with novel challenges, the paper addresses the issue of how - in spite of the relative stability of power structures and notwithstanding the subtle modes of action of symbolic violence as described by Bourdieu - such processes of individual development are at all possible. Özdamar's novel is interpreted, on the one hand, as a vivid description of the mechanisms of symbolic violence operating at the workplace, in the political public and in the family and, on the other hand, as a successful enactment of subversive forms of challenging this violence, which find their support in the communicational sites of a kind of counter public and in the defamiliarizing use of hegemonic speech patterns.'
