    Dieser Band widmet sich der „internationalen Gemeinschaft“. Dabei fragt er nicht nach deren Faktizität, sondern rekonstruiert die politische Bedeutung des Begriffs, der regelmäßig und in wirkmächtiger Weise zur Deutung internationaler Politik verwendet wird. Mit einem textanalytischen Instrumentarium, das in der pragmatistischen Sozialtheorie verankert ist, werden exemplarisch drei Reden prominenter europäischer Politiker in hermeneutischen Feinanalysen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse verweisen auf einen Doppelcharakter des Begriffs: Er ist einerseits offen genug, um unterschiedliche Entwürfe einer gerechten Globalordnung zu transportieren; andererseits ermöglicht er es, analog einer Währung, Legitimität für gegensätzliche politische Zielsetzungen zu „erkaufen“. This volume deals with the ‘international community’. Instead of asking for its factual existence, however, it reconstructs the political meaning of the concept itself, which is used regularly and quite effectively in the interpretation of international politics. Using a hermeneutical approach rooted in pragmatist social theory, it examines three speeches by prominent European political leaders in detail. The results point out the dual character of the concept: on the one hand, it is open enough to convey different conceptions of a just global order; on the other hand, analogously to a currency, it allows legitimacy for contrary political purposes to be ‘bought’.

    Between 1900 and 1960, many writers in France and Britain either had parallel careers in diplomatic corps or frequented diplomatic circles: Paul Claudel, Albert Cohen, Lawrence Durrell, Graham Greene, John le Carré, André Malraux, Nancy Mitford, Marcel Proust, and others. What attracts writers to diplomacy, and what attracts diplomats to publishing their experiences in memoirs or novels? Like novelists, diplomats are in the habit of describing situations with an eye for atmosphere, personalities, and looming crises. Yet novels about diplomats, far from putting a solemn face on everything, often devolve into comedy if not outright farce. Anachronistic yet charming, diplomats take the long view of history and social transformation, which puts them out of step with their times - at least in fiction. In this collection of essays, eleven contributors reflect on diplomacy in French and British novels, with particular focus on temporality, style, comedy, characterization, and the professional liabilities attached to representing a state abroad. With archival examples as evidence, the essays in this volume indicate that modern fiction, especially fiction about diplomacy, is a response to the increasing speed of communication, the decline of imperial power, and the ceding of old ways of negotiating to new

    Dieser Band widmet sich der „internationalen Gemeinschaft“. Dabei fragt er nicht nach deren Faktizität, sondern rekonstruiert die politische Bedeutung des Begriffs, der regelmäßig und in wirkmächtiger Weise zur Deutung internationaler Politik verwendet wird. Mit einem textanalytischen Instrumentarium, das in der pragmatistischen Sozialtheorie verankert ist, werden exemplarisch drei Reden prominenter europäischer Politiker in hermeneutischen Feinanalysen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse verweisen auf einen Doppelcharakter des Begriffs: Er ist einerseits offen genug, um unterschiedliche Entwürfe einer gerechten Globalordnung zu transportieren; andererseits ermöglicht er es, analog einer Währung, Legitimität für gegensätzliche politische Zielsetzungen zu „erkaufen“. This volume deals with the ‘international community’. Instead of asking for its factual existence, however, it reconstructs the political meaning of the concept itself, which is used regularly and quite effectively in the interpretation of international politics. Using a hermeneutical approach rooted in pragmatist social theory, it examines three speeches by prominent European political leaders in detail. The results point out the dual character of the concept: on the one hand, it is open enough to convey different conceptions of a just global order; on the other hand, analogously to a currency, it allows legitimacy for contrary political purposes to be ‘bought’.

Its purpose is not only to describe how the world operates but also to help us imagine how we might achieve a more equitable and sustainable way of life. Presenting key concepts and thinkers, notably Theodor Adorno and Michel Foucault, this book provides an evaluation of the field and suggests how critical thinking can contribute to confronting the challenges of the twenty-first century. It argues that current critiques of critical theory in international relations can only be overcome if we engage with ideas from outside of the western tradition.

This book provides an overview of the current state of research in this regard, with its contributions revealing which research findings are being discussed in politics and in practice and where further research is needed.     Geopolitical conflicts have increasingly been a driver of trade policy. We study the potential effects of global and persistent geopolitical conflicts on trade, technological innovation, and economic growth. In conventional trade models the welfare costs of such conflicts are modest. We build a multi-sector multi-region general equilibrium model with dynamic sector-specific knowledge diffusion, which magnifies welfare losses of trade conflicts. Idea diffusion is mediated by the input-output structure of production, such that both sector cost shares and import trade shares characterize the source distribution of ideas. Using this framework, we explore the potential impact of a "decoupling of the global economy," a hypothetical scenario under which technology systems would diverge in the global economy. We divide the global economy into two geopolitical blocs -East and West -based on foreign policy similarity and model decoupling through an increase in iceberg trade costs (full decoupling) or tariffs (tariff decoupling). Results yield three main insights. First, the projected welfare losses for the global economy of a decoupling scenario can be drastic, as large as 12% in some regions and are largest in the lower income regions as they would benefit less from technology spillovers from richer areas. Second, the described size and pattern of welfare effects are specific to the model with diffusion of ideas. Without diffusion of ideas the size and variation across regions of the welfare losses would be substantially smaller. Third, a multi-sector framework exacerbates diffusion inefficiencies induced by trade costs relative to a single-sector one.

    This paper analyzes whether the propensity to secede by subnational regions responds mostly to differences in income per capita or to distinct identities. We explore this question in a quantitative political economy model where people's willingness to finance a public good depends on their income and identity. Using high-resolution economic and linguistic data for the entire globe, we predict the propensity to secede of 3,003 subnational regions in 173 countries. We validate the model-based predictions with data on secessionist movements, state fragility, regional autonomy, and conflict, as well as with an application to the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Counterfactual analysis strongly suggests that identity trumps income in determining a region's propensity to secede. Removing identity differences reduces the average support for secession from 7.5% to 0.6% of the population.

Unsurprisingly, its increasing differentiation over the last three decades has raised questions about the ability to communicate across different academic camps.
