    Le courant « droit et littérature » très développé aux États-Unis, est encore embryonnaire dans les pays de langue française. Fruit de la collaboration de juristes, de philosophes et de littéraires, cet ouvrage cherche à réduire cette lacune. Deux questions constituent le fil rouge de la recherche : que peut apporter la littérature au droit, que gagne la littérature à comprendre la présence du droit dans ses œuvres ? L'entreprise n'est cependant pas sans risques. Entre la plume et le glaive, les liaisons ne sont-elles pas nécessairement dangereuses ? Aussi, entre le droit qui codifie la réalité, et la littérature qui libère les possibles, il convient, dans un premier temps, de mesurer les écarts. Alors que le droit hiérarchise et tranche, attribue des rôles convenus, et postule la généralité et l'abstraction, la littérature, en revanche, opère comme laboratoire expérimental de l'humain, ne reculant pas devant les passages à la limite les plus vertigineux : cultivant l'ambiguïté de ses mots et de ses personnages, elle creuse la singularité de l'individuel. Mais s'il est vrai que le droit est du côté des formes instituées, et la littérature du côté des forces instituantes, c'est à une dialectique des deux pôles que ce livre conduit. Entre le « tout est possible » de la création littéraire, et le « tu ne dois pas » de l'impératif juridique, il y a, en effet, au moins autant interaction que confrontation. Alors se découvre un droit pénétré d'imaginaire et traversé de failles multiples, tandis que, au travers du particulier et de la fiction dont elle se réclame, la littérature pourrait bien reconduire aux sources de l'universel et du normatif. Entre fiction et réalité, particulier et universel, les positions sont donc moins fixées qu'on le croit. Des tragiques grecs à Kafka, de Shakespeare à Musil, de la poésie au roman populaire, ce livre trace quelques pistes, sans prétention d'exhaustivité.     Immémoriales et infiniment diverses sont les bibliothèques, et leurs représentations, toujours à mi-chemin entre la réalité et le rêve... Les bibliothèques entre imaginaires et réalités, tel fut le sujet de deux colloques (juin 2006 et janvier 2007) de l'Université d'Artois, dont les communications constituent cet ouvrage. La première section est consacrée aux collections, selon les différents sens du terme : elle montre combien de représentations y sont à l'oeuvre, tant chez leurs « usagers » que chez leurs « producteurs » (éditeurs, bibliothécaires). La seconde rassemble des articles qui envisagent la bibliothèque comme une des institutions du champ des « lettres », où s'exercent à la fois des pratiques de savoir et des pratiques de pouvoir. La troisième envisage des représentations de bibliothèques à fonction « critique », de l'idéal à la folie. Enfin, la quatrième explore quelques « bibliothèques d'écrivains », pour analyser le rapport paradoxal des « auteurs » avec les livres des autres...

    La traduction est un phénomène central pour l'Europe telle qu'elle est en train de se construire : elle assure les échanges entre Etats sans qu'une langue commune donne l'impression d'une hégémonie quelconque ou d'un abandon des identités nationales. Cet attachement à la notion d'identité tout en ménageant les échanges culturels est une constante de l'histoire européenne et ces échanges passés, fondés sur la traduction, font que la construction de l'Europe ne se réduit pas à la création d'une entité économique et politique : elle possède une dimension humaine et culturelle spécifique, qui lui donne son âme. Ce colloque a abordé ces deux aspects du rôle de la traduction en Europe : dans le passé et aujourd'hui comme facteur de découverte mutuelle et ferment culturel ; de manière plus spécifique aujourd'hui comme facteur d'équilibre et instrument de communication au sein des institutions. Le colloque a rassemblé des spécialistes de nombreux pays européens ou observateurs jetant un regard sur l'Europe. Les textes partent de la traduction en Irlande au Moyen Age pour aboutir aux traducteurs allemands de Roumanie au XIXe siècle. La dernière partie du colloque tente de faire le point sur divers aspects de la recherche en matière de traductologie ainsi que sur la formation des traducteurs.

    The importance of investment in early childhood education (ECE) has been widely documented in the literature. Among the benefits, particularly for children from disadvantaged backgrounds, is its potential to mitigate educational inequality. However, some evidence also suggests that the positive effects of ECE on later outcomes tend to dissipate over time, leaving children who attended such programmes no better off academically than those who did not. This paper studies the relationship between students' years spent in ECE and the results of their educational assessment outcomes at age 15.Using PISA survey data for fourteen European countries from 2015 and 2018, we conduct a cross-country comparison of student performance in reading, mathematics, and science, correlating the results to early childcare and pre-primary school attendance. Our findings show that participation in early childcare is associated with better assessments at age 15, but that the benefit is nonlinear and peaks at 3-4 years of childcare attendance. Examination of gender heterogeneity patterns reveals differences in girls' and boys' performance on the assessments; however, there are no gender differences in the relationship between childcare participation and test outcomes. We also explore differences related to the type of educational system attended and find distinct results for the unitary and separate settings.

    Although entrepreneurship plays a key role in economic development, it remains largely unknown. The reason is that it is challenging to measure entrepreneurship objectively and identify its determinants. In this paper, we analyze the effect of a particular feature of the institutional landscape, namely corruption, on entrepreneurship. It is expected that corruption discourages entrepreneurship since it undermines fair competition. We employ two proxies for entrepreneurship that are widely used in the literature: (i) nascent entrepreneurship collected from Global Entrepreneurship Monitor; and (ii) entry rate defined as the number of new firms divided by the total number of previous year's registered businesses, collected from the World Bank Group Entrepreneurship Survey. We find that better control of corruption promotes entrepreneurship. Our findings are preserved when we add other determinants of entrepreneurship which are drawn from the literature. When we use legal origins as instruments for corruption, our results remain essentially the same.

    We study the origins of support for gender-related affirmative action (AA) in two pre-registered online experiments (N = 1, 700). Participants act as employers who decide whether to use AA in hiring job candidates. We implement three treatments to disentangle the preference for AA stemming from i) perceived gender differences in productivity, ii) beliefs about AA effects on productivity, or iii) other non-material motives. To test i), we provide information to employers that there is no gender gap in productivity. To test ii), we inform the candidates about the hiring rule ex-ante, allowing us to observe how AA is expected to affect productivity. To test iii), we remove the payment to the employers based on the chosen candidates' productivity, thus making AA cheaper. We do not find significant differences in AA support across treatments, despite successfully altering beliefs about expected productivity differences. Our results suggest that AA choice reflects a more intrinsic and inelastic preference for advancing female candidates

    People's trust in state and political institutions is a key foundation of a well-functioning economy. We estimate the impact of direct elections on people's trust in state and political institutions, using a major political reform in Indonesia as the source of exogenous variation. Prior to 2005, regents, mayors, and governors were elected by the local legislative assembly. Since 2005, however, they have had to compete in an open election where voters directly choose their preferred leader. The historically and institutionally driven staggered implementation of these local direct elections allow us to identify the causal impact of the reform. We find that district direct elections increase trust in all state and political institutions, except for the police. However, our finding does not hold in districts that experienced moderate or high hostility during the elections, implying that trust is strongly influenced by the political situation. We also empirically show that the increase in trust took place simultaneously with improvements in economic outcomes.
