The share of private consumption has long been small in the Chinese GDP. The share started to increase in the past decade, but the trend reversed with the covid-19 pandemic. Now as the Chinese economy reopens and recovers from covid restrictions, the share of consumption could return to a growing trend. This resumption of a longer-term trend could have important implications for global trade. Our simulations, which are based on recent international input-output data, suggest that the current shift in China's demand structure is likely to increase import demand for sectors such as the food industry, agriculture, textiles, and travel services. Sectors facing a demand slowdown include base metals, non-metallic minerals, and machinery and equipment.

This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the supply and demand side of structural transformation in Turkey. Using the GGDC/UNU-WIDER Economic Transformation Database, we find that labour productivity improvements explain more than half of economic growth in the period 1980-2021. This is mainly thanks to within-sector productivity improvements, while the contribution of structural change declines over time. Time-series regression analysis shows that structural change is driven by per capita income growth and financial openness but is halted by trade integration. Furthermore, decomposition analysis from input- output tables demonstrates that domestic final demand has been the main source of output growth since 1980 and the contribution of export expansion has increased over time, but import dependency has persisted. The intermediate goods industry stands out as the locomotive sector in the economy throughout the entire period according to forward and backward linkage analysis.

Wassily Leontief met with decades of success for the development of input-output analysis, and yet he remained a staunch critic of the economics profession throughout his life. To understand his success, its limits, and the origins of his discontent, I separate the scientific activities of input-output from the system of belief built around it, and from the institutions set up to advance this research program. This leads to considering the interaction of Leontief's research program with other research programs through these three poles: the scientific debate, the collision of belief systems about the world, and an institutional fight for funds and researchers. The end result is a picture of how Leontief managed to build a successful research program where the science led to beliefs about the world that were able to justify building institutions promoting input-output, in an environment of competition and cooperation.

We examine recent changes in the structure of Chinese manufacturing value chains using a standard input-output framework. Our results suggest that the previous increasing trend in the share of domestic value added in Chinese value chains stalled during our observation period (2018-2022). We also note a shift in the geographic structure of foreign value added embodied in Chinese value chains. These changes seem to be mainly associated with trade policy measures implemented by China and other countries. China's share has increased in the foreign value added embodied in manufacturing value chains of the US, EU and Russia.

The EU, US and several other countries have responded with a wide range of new economic sanctions on Russia in response to the military attack on Ukraine. These sanctions include various restrictive measures on trade with Russia. In this brief, we examine the potential short-term effects of trade sanctions on Russian production with an input-output framework. We find that the trade sanctions can have substantial negative effects on Russian production when Russia is unable to find alternative markets for imports and exports.

Between 2013 and 2016, several regions in Brazil suffered from some event of scarcity, drought and/or the possibility of water rationing. However, the direct abstraction of Blue Water for consumptive use grew 6.38% in the period. In turn, technology is considered an increasingly important factor for the sustainable use of natural resources. In this context, the objective of this article is to investigate the role of the technological effect on variations in the volume of water used in Brazil between 2013 and 2017. To meet this objective, environmentally extended input-output matrices and Structural Decomposition Analysis are used. Among the main results, it is highlighted that the technological effect has not contributed to counteract the pressure for the growth of water use in general. From this type of identification, the proposed method can generate useful information for public policies towards the sustainable use of water.

As economic planners sought to rebuild Europe in the unstable postwar period, economic expertise was called upon to help in the drawing of national budgets and to inform economic and planning policies. A tool that circulated from academia to economic administrations was the input-output framework that had been developed by Wassily Leontief since the 1930s. As Leontief came into contact with other economists and with the goals of economic administrations, his framework was repurposed to give answers to the questions of economic planners. Statisticians and economists in Western Europe worked to integrate the input-output framework with the developing national accounts. Looking at their work with a particular focus on investment and development policies, I bring new insights on the role of experts, by showing that the input-output model had little impact on the actual coordination of economic policies.

In this policy brief, we study the development of trade integration, specifically the participation in global value chains, of the Western Balkan countries. Using a multi-country input-output Database, called the 'wiiw MC IOD', we first analyse in a descriptive way the trends in economic integration by looking at forward and backward linkages. Second, we apply a gravity model to accurately pin down the effects of trade integration. The results show that potential EU membership and the earlier Stabilisation and Association Agreements (SAAs) boost trade flows between the new trading partners. These agreements affect particularly the forward linkages and thus support economies to sell their products both directly and indirectly on global markets. This suggests that the Western Balkans should focus their efforts on achieving the maximum possible level of economic integration with the EU even before full accession, including greater access to the EU budget, joining the EU Customs Union and expanding the existing SAAs. Also, EU support for the Western Balkans amid the COVID-19 crisis should be stepped up in order to keep the countries on track for EU integration. More investment in regional infrastructure has the potential to make near-shoring from, for example, Germany and Austria more likely in a post-COVID-19 world.
