This paper analyses the political economy of women's-empowerment-related policymaking in India through a re-examination of the context of both the genesis and closure of a major programme, Mahila Samakhya. Mahila Samakhya, which embodied feminist philosophy and pedagogy, started in 1987 with the aim of creating the education-based empowerment of Dalit and Adivasi women in rural India, and was inexplicably shut down in 2014. We argue that a combination of political philosophy, electoral majority, and contemporary global trends influenced both the beginning and the demise of the programme. We argue that programmes such as Mahila Samakhya, which called for a long and messy process of collectivization of the most marginalized women using the methodology of reflection and reconstruction, became much less desirable with global shifts in development discourse. These shifts towards more 'evidence'-based policy focused much more on immediate 'outcomes' than on 'processes', much to the detriment of programmes such as Mahila Samakhya.

We review and discuss research on the development of regional entrepreneurship over time. A particular focus is on the long-term persistence of regional levels of entrepreneurship, its explanation, and its meaning for economic development. What is the state of empirical research in this field, and what can explain the empirical findings? How are long-term trends of entrepreneurial activity linked to regional performance in terms of employment, gross domestic product (GDP), and innovative activity? Based on our assessments we derive conclusions for theory, policy implications, and avenues for further research.

(Autorenreferat) ; 'The text analyzes the conceptual history of euthanasia in the popular and scientific discourse. It focus on two short periods of changes, before the outbreak of World War I and during the early 1970s, when new terms were created and new meanings became accepted. These upheavals can be understood as reactions to changing views and needs. And vice versa new words and meanings modify the perception and the interpretation of the signified. The main focus of the text is the analysis of these interactions with their specific dynamics on a field which is narrowly connected with individual fears.' (author's abstract)

(Autorenreferat) ; 'The apprehension of a forthcoming 'obligation to die' which is currently articulated in various occasions is not only a reaction upon the debates within health care policy on rationing and the discourse on euthanasia. It also refers to a hard to define cultural condition which currently seems to justify the possibility to decide about the end of one's own life. Hence, the article analyses the conceptual history of 'Altentötung' (killing the elderly) and its artistic staging at the beginning of the 21st century. The cultural-historic dimension of the current debates is visible in both cases. In doing so, the difference between premodern practices and their narrativization or modern imaginations respectively can be elaborated. The apparatus of this difference consists of the fundamental concept of population. ...

"Though the second German state existed only four decades, it was well on its way to developing an odd language of its own, not immediately understandable to a Western audience. Inspired by the linguistic turn, this article attempted to analyze the effect of this separation of speech on historical research. To begin with, GDR publications used a different vocabulary which was characterized by a kind of double-speak, a noticeable difference between official declarations and personal communications. There was a clean hierarchy with political pronouncements in the lead, ideological transmission texts in the middle and actual daily usage following behind. The SED version of Marxism-Leninism created a new master narrative of German history, led by the working class and culminating in the creation of the GDR which had the effect of creating a public norm. This mixture of ideology, Soviet phrases and party-speak constrained methodological innovation and also led to the swift disappearance of this style after 1989." (author's abstract)
