This paper studies how the prehistoric geographic distribution of domesticable transport animal species has contributed to shaping differences in development. I identify the historic ranges of the ten animal species that are (1) suitable for domestication and (2) suitable for carrying loads. Based on these ranges, I create a measure of the prehistoric presence of domesticable transport animals around the world. The empirical analysis reveals a strong relationship between the historic presence of domesticable transport animals and the emergence of ancient long-distance trade routes and early forms of hierarchy. Historical access to domesticable transport animals also continued to matter in the long run: Pre-industrial ethnic groups living in regions historically home to domesticable transport animals were more involved in trade and had built more complex hierarchical structures. Moreover, these groups developed greater numerical skills, larger levels of labor specialization, and higher levels of class stratification, thus underscoring the broad cultural and developmental impacts exerted by historical access to domesticable transport animals.

Matthias Adrian Prof. Dr. Anna Katharina Becker Elisabetta Cau, M.A. John Egle, M.A. Prof. Dr. Joseph Freedman Prof. Dr. Dagmar Hammer-Tugendhat Prof. Dr. Margareth Lanzinger Prof. Dr. Sigrid Ruby Prof. Dr. Raffaella Sarti Dr. Daniel Schläppi Prof. Dr. Inken Schmidt-Voges Prof. Dr. Tina Terrahe Christian Uhde, M.A

In Central Asia, community water governance insttutons emerged and prevailed for a long tme. By employing an analytcal modelling approach using variants of the evolutonary Hawk-Dove game, we scrutnise three epochs' (pre-Tsarist, Tsarist and Soviet) coordinaton mechanisms and qualitatvely compare them in the efficiency spectrum. We fnd that the pre-Tsarist community water governance settng, due to its synergetc and pluralistc aspects, was associated with higher efficiency than the Tsarist and Soviet periods' settings. The pre-Tsarist community arrangement linked irrigaton dutes with benefits. Our analytcal model reveals how the Tsarist Russian regulaton that replaced the electon-sanctoning element with a de-facto system appointing the irrigaton staff and paying them fixed wages corrupted the well-established pre-Tsarist decentralised water governance. We term this move the "Kaufman drift". Resulting inadequacies in the water governance could have been averted either by restoring the community mechanism's electon-sanctioning attribute or else with an alternative approach such as privatising water resources. With the use of the "Krivoshein game," we produce an alternatve scenario for the region where we envisage the potental consequences of the water privatisaton. Modelling history might not disentangle the complex nature of water governance evoluton fully, however, the heuristics we use in the analysis assist in guiding the diagnosis of the matter and its solution. This makes our study well-timed for contemporary Central Asia. The analyses assess current water management's chances to return to ancient principles of election-sanctoning and perspectives of private irrigaton water rights.

Humanity's most pressing need is to learn how to live within our planet's boundaries - something that likely means doing without economic growth. How, then, can we create a non-growth society that is both just and equitable? I attempt to address this question by looking at an aspect of sustainability (and equity) that is not often discussed: the growth of hierarchy. As societies consume more energy, they tend to become more hierarchical. At the same time, the growth of hierarchy also seems to be a key driver of income/resource inequality. In this essay, I review the evidence for the joint relation between energy, hierarchy and inequality. I then speculate about what it implies for achieving a sustainable and equitable future.

Agents participating in different kind of organizations, usually take different positions in some network structure. Two well-known network structures are hierarchies and communication networks. We give an overview of the most common models of communication and hierarchy restrictions in cooperative games, compare different network structures with each other and discuss network structures that combine communication as well as hierarchical features. Throughout the survey, we illustrate these network structures by applying them to cooperative games with restricted cooperation.

Although the determinants of income are complex, the results are surprisingly uniform. To a first approximation, top incomes follow a power-law distribution, and the redistribution of income corresponds to a change in the power-law exponent. Given the messiness of the struggle for resources, why is the outcome so simple? This paper explores the idea that the (re)distribution of top incomes is uniform because it is shaped by a ubiquitous feature of social life, namely hierarchy. Using a model first developed by Herbert Simon and Harold Lydall, I show that hierarchy can explain the power-law distribution of top incomes, including how income gets redistributed as the rich get richer.

The article is devoted to the problem of foreign language from the standpoint of psychology, pedagogy and teaching methods. This problem will be mainly considered in forming communicative competency in reading speciality literature. It should be regarded that motivation is also a method of learning and the object of education. For the learning process, the motivation is the students' orientation to various aspects of learning activity. Therefore, a complex of different impulses creates different types of motivation for students' learning activities. The complex notions should include needs, motives, goals, interests and emotions. Each teacher should apply such a general pedagogical method, called "the method of reasoned encouragement". It is based on the ability of the teacher to notice not only the significant success of the student but also the minor one.Interest in learning is brought up through the content of educational material, increasing educational activities within the framework of problem-based learning, and actual practical tasks corresponding to communicative needs. In the article, several aspects of motivation, as well as through the development of the motivational sphere of the student's personality and its components, were determined and set, such as motives, goals, and emotions.
