Die Beiträge des Bandes spüren diesem narrativen Bedürfnis nach und stellen die Frage, was es ästhetisch und ethisch bedeutet, dass die Kriminalerzählung zur Leitgattung der Gegenwart geworden ist. ; Contemporary culture is characterised by a peculiar desire for crime narratives. Novels, non-fiction books, films, TV series or podcasts that deal with real or fictional murders, acts of fraud or spectacular thefts attract a wide audience and often become the object of public fascination. The contributions to this volume trace this hunger for crime stories and evaluate both the aesthetic and ethical significance of them having become one of today's leading narrative genres.

Das Spektrum dieser axiologischen Implikationen reicht von der möglichst sachlichen bis hin zu einer stark attribuierenden oder urteilenden Darstellung, die (un-)merklich in die Manipulation abgleiten kann. Das (Be-)Werten und (Be-)Urteilen hat trotz der enormen Tragweite für Gesellschaft und (Geistes-)Wissenschaft bisher jedoch kaum theoretische Reflexion erfahren. Die Beiträger*innen des interdisziplinären Bandes setzen genau hier an, wobei die Mechanismen der Urteilsimplikationen in Kunst, Literatur, Fotografie, Videogames, Karikaturen, aber auch in Journalismus und Soziologie im Blickfeld stehen.     Abstract ; This article employs Igor Primoratz’s ethics of sexuality to analyze the incestuous relationship between a thirteen year old girl and her uncle in the novel El lenguaje the las orquídeas (2007), by Adriana González Mateos. My critical inquiry starts with a basic question: What hides behind the multiple ways in which incest is represented here? The obvious answer would be: the disintegration of the family. By analogy, if the family falls apart, so does the whole country. The Mexican nation here, as Doris Summers would say, no longer needs incest to consolidate itself, perhaps because this concept is undergoing profound transformations. Due to continuous social and cultural shifts, as well as the profound mark feminist and gay liberation movements have left on the Mexican society, the novel discussed here posits a new vision of incest. One that leaves behind the pater familias in order to reveal the growing importance of women in society and their role in the formation (or disintegration for that matter) of the family nucleus.

    The nineteenth century was a time of extraordinary attunement to the unspoken, the elusively present, and the subtly haunting. Quiet Testimony finds in such attunement a valuable rethinking of what it means to encounter the truth. It argues that four key writers—Emerson, Douglass, Melville, and Henry James—open up the domain of the witness by articulating quietude’s claim on the clamoring world.The premise of quiet testimony responds to urgent questions in critical theory and human rights. Emerson is brought into conversation with Levinas, and Douglass is considered alongside Agamben. Yet the book is steeped in the intellectual climate of the nineteenth century, in which speech and meaning might exceed the bounds of the recognized human subject. In this context, Melville’s characters could read the weather, and James’s could spend an evening with dead companions.By following the path by which ostensibly unremarkable entities come to voice, Quiet Testimony suggests new configurations for ethics, politics, and the literary

    Since World War II, French and Francophone literature and film have repeatedly sought not to singularize the Holocaust as the paradigm of historical trauma but rather to connect its memory with other memories of violence, namely that of colonialism. These works produced what Debarati Sanyal calls a "memory-in-complicity" attuned to the gray zones that implicate different regimes of violence across history as well as those of different subject positions such as victim, perpetrator, witness, and reader/spectator. Examining a range of works from Albert Camus, Primo Levi, Alain Resnais, and Jean-Paul Sartre to Jonathan Littell, Assia Djebar, Giorgio Agamben, and Boualem Sansal, Memory and Complicity develops an inquiry into the political force and ethical dangers of such implications, contrasting them with contemporary models for thinking about trauma and violence and offering an extended meditation on the role of aesthetic form, especially allegory, within acts of transhistorical remembrance. What are the political benefits and ethical risks of invoking the memory of one history in order to address another? What is the role of complicity in making these connections? How does complicity, rather than affect based discourses of trauma, shame and melancholy, open a critical engagement with the violence of history? What is it about literature and film that have made them such powerful vehicles for this kind of connective memory work?As it offers new readings of some of the most celebrated and controversial novelists, filmmakers, and playwrights from the French-speaking world, Memory and Complicity addresses these questions in order to reframe the way we think about historical memory and its political uses today

    Shakespeare as a Way of Life shows how reading Shakespeare helps us to live with epistemological weakness and even to practice this weakness, to make it a way of life. In a series of close readings, Kuzner shows how Hamlet, Lucrece, Othello, The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest, and Timon of Athens, impel us to grapple with basic uncertainties: how we can be free, whether the world is abundant, whether we have met the demands of love and social life.To Kuzner, Shakespeare’s skepticism doesn’t have the enabling potential of Keats’s heroic "negativity capability," but neither is that skepticism the corrosive disease that necessarily issues in tragedy. While sensitive to both possibilities, Kuzner offers a way to keep negative capability negative while making skepticism livable. Rather than light the way to empowered, liberal subjectivity, Shakespeare’s works demand lasting disorientation, demand that we practice the impractical so as to reshape the frames by which we view and negotiate the world.The act of reading Shakespeare cannot yield the practical value that cognitive scientists and literary critics attribute to it. His work neither clarifies our sense of ourselves, of others, or of the world; nor heartens us about the human capacity for insight and invention; nor sharpens our ability to appreciate and adjudicate complex problems of ethics and politics. Shakespeare’s plays, rather, yield cognitive discomforts, and it is just these discomforts that make them worthwhile

    How do we read after the so-called death of literature? If we are to attend to the proclamations that the representational apparatuses of literature and politics are dead, what aesthetic, ethical, and political possibilities remain for us today? Our critical moment, Graff Zivin argues, demands anarchaeological reading: reading for the blind spots, errors, points of opacity or untranslatability in works of philosophy and art.Rather than applying concepts from philosophy in order to understand or elucidate cultural works, the book exposes works of philosophy, literary theory, narrative, poetry, film, and performance art and activism to one another. Working specifically with art, film, and literature from Argentina (Jorge Luis Borges, Juán José Saer, Ricardo Piglia, César Aira, Albertina Carri, the Internacional Errorista), Graff Zivin allows such thinkers as Levinas, Derrida, Badiou, and Rancière to be inflected by Latin American cultural production. Through these acts of interdiscursive and interdisciplinary (or indisciplinary) exposure, such ethical and political concepts as identification and recognition, decision and event, sovereignty and will, are read as constitutively impossible, erroneous. Rather than weakening either ethics or politics, however, the anarchaeological reading these works stage and demand opens up and radicalizes the possibility of justice

    This study traces the connection of infinity and Levinasian ethics in 21st-century fiction. It tackles the paradox of how infinity can be (re-)presented in the finite space between the covers of a book and finds an answer that combines conceptual metaphor theory with concepts from classical narratology and beyond, such as mise en abyme, textual circularity, intertextuality or omniscient narration. It argues that texts with such structures may be conceptualised as infinite via Lakoff and Núñez’s Basic Metaphor of Infinity. The catachrestic transfer of infinity from structure to text means that the texts themselves are understood to be infinite. Taking its cue from the central role of the infinite in Emmanuel Levinas’s ethics, the function of such ‘fictions of infinity’ turns out to be ethical: infinite textuality disrupts reading patterns and calls into question the reader’s spontaneity to interpret. This hypothesis is put to the test in detailed readings of four 21st-century novels, David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, Jeanette Winterson’s The Stone Gods, Ian McEwan’s Saturday and John Banville’s The Infinities. This book thus combines ethical criticism with structural aesthetics to uncover ethical potential in fiction

    Die Studie erfasst das Kunstprogramm MERZ des Avantgarde-Künstlers Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) als autonomieästhetischen Entwurf und stellt es damit in eine Diskurstradition, die um 1800 ihren Anfang genommen hat. Im ersten Schritt werden aus den grundlegenden Konzeptionen ästhetischer Autonomie (Karl Philipp Moritz, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Schiller, Friedrich Schlegel und Novalis) Kernmerkmale des ästhetisch Autonomen abgeleitet. Die Untersuchung betrachtet MERZ daraufhin vor der Folie dieser Merkmale und zeigt, dass Schwitters zentrale Impulse des autonomieästhetischen Diskurses einerseits fortschreibt und andererseits einlöst. Verschiedenste Texte/Artefakte des ›Allround‹-Künstlers rücken dabei in den Blick. Im Ergebnis steht die Erkenntnis, dass das Verhältnis von ›ästhetischer Autonomie‹ und ›historischer Avantgarde‹ – von Schwitters ausgehend – als genealogisch zu denken ist.

    Wer verantwortet die Bedeutung eines literarischen Textes? Dieser Frage nimmt sich die Studie nicht nur auf literaturtheoretischer Ebene mit Blick auf die germanistische Autorschaftsdebatte an, sondern legt sie auch einer hermeneutischen Untersuchung des Gesamtwerkes von Elfriede Jelinek zugrunde. Dass gerade die Texte der österreichischen Literaturnobelpreisträgerin für die Frage relevant sind, zeigt sich nicht nur an den Kontroversen, die sie immer wieder ausgelöst haben, sondern auch an Jelineks markantem Einsatz von Autofiktion. Verstanden als Überbegriff für literarische Verfahren, welche die Grenze zwischen der Literatur und dem Leben von Autor:innen verwischen und damit den Akt der Interpretation verunsichern, wird durch Autofiktion die Frage nach der Verantwortung für Jelineks Werke in diesen selbst thematisch. Bekannte Texte wie „Lust“ oder „Ein Sportstück“ präsentieren sich nicht nur als Produkte der Autorin, sondern auch als entscheidend durch die Akteure der Rezeption geprägt.

    Platons Bildungsbegriff wirft die Frage auf, unter welchen Voraussetzungen sich die epistemische Suche tatsächlich als seelischer Wandel realisiert. Die platonischen Motive der Selbstsorge und des guten Lebens, der Seelentherapie und Scham führen, wie die Untersuchung zeigt, auf eine selbstreflexive und auf das Ziel des Guten hin ausgerichtete Erkenntnisbewegung, die vermittelnd und heilend auf das Seele-Leib-Verhältnis wirkt. Die Studie konturiert die Dynamik seelischer Lernprozesse an spezifischen, auch bildlichen Vergegenwärtigungsformen und an Übergängen von Wissen. Platons Verankerung seines Bildungskonzepts in einer philosophischen Anthropologie und seine Transformation von Rhetorik und Poetik werden an der Eros-Figur im Phaidros manifest. Plato's concept of education raises the question of the conditions under which the epistemic quest and a change in the attitude of the soul actually correlate. The Platonic motifs of self-care and a good life, soul therapy and shame lead, as this study shows, to a self-reflective movement of knowledge, which has an orienting effect in view of the good and a mediating and ordering effect regarding the soul-body relationship. This work contours the dynamics of learning processes on specific, and figurative, forms of representation and on transitions of knowledge. Plato's anchoring of his educational concept in a philosophical anthropology and his transformation of rhetoric and poetics become manifest through the figure of Eros in the ‘Phaedrus’.

    Schleiermacher gilt im Kontext der Diskussion um die Geisteswissenschaften als »Klassiker der Hermeneutik« und als Mitbegründer des »Historismus«. Dieses Buch zeigt, daß dies eine schiefe, zumindest sehr enge Blickweise ist. Denn für Schleiermacher war nicht die Hermeneutik, sondern die philosophische Ethik die Basis aller Geisteswissenschaften, und diese waren ihm deshalb nicht interpretierende, sondern ethisch-geschichtliche Wissenschaften. Die Hermeneutik aber ist in seinem System ebenso wie Staatslehre, Ästhetik und Religionsphilosophie von jener Ethik abhängig; von einer Ethik, die eine praktische Philosophie im umfassendsten Sinne und eine Theorie der modernen Kultur ist.

Dazu sind gewisse ethische Grundkenntnisse unerlässlich, die das vorliegende Buch anhand von biblischen Texten vermitteln und damit die moraltheologische Grundlage für ein angemessenes Verständnis ethischer Aussagen der Bibel geben will. Auf diese Weise kann es zugleich als Einführung in die Moraltheologie dienen.
