    Romantic Revelations shows that the nonhuman is fundamental to Romanticism’s political responses to climatic catastrophes. Exploring what he calls "post-apocalyptic Romanticism," Chris Washington intervenes in the critical conversation that has long defined Romanticism as an apocalyptic field. "Apocalypse" means "the revelation of a perfected world," which sees Romanticism’s back-to-nature environmentalism as a return to paradise and peace on earth. Romantic Revelations, however, demonstrates that the destructive climate change events of 1816, "the year without a summer," changed Romantic thinking about the environment and the end of the world. Their post-apocalyptic visions correlate to the beginning of the Anthropocene, the time when humans initiated the possible extinction of their own species and potentially the earth. Rather than constructing paradises where humans are reborn or human existence ends, the later Romantics are interested in how to survive in the ashes after great social and climatic global disasters. Romantic Revelations argues that Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, John Clare, and Jane Austen sketch out a post-apocalyptic world that, in contrast to the sunnier Romantic narratives, is paradoxically the vision that offers us hope. In thinking through life after disaster, Washington contends that these authors craft an optimistic vision of the future that leads to a new politics

    Premodern Ecologies in the Modern Literary Imagination explores how the cognitive and physical landscapes in which scholars conduct research, write, and teach have shaped their understandings of medieval and Renaissance English literary "oecologies." The collection strives to practice what Ursula K. Heise calls "eco-cosmopolitanism," a method that imagines forms of local environmentalism as a defense against the interventions of open-market global networks. It also expands the idea’s possibilities and identifies its limitations through critical studies of premodern texts, artefacts, and environmental history. The essays connect real environments and their imaginative (re)creations and affirm the urgency of reorienting humanity’s responsiveness to, and responsibility for, the historical links between human and non-human existence. The discussion of ways in which meditation on scholarly place and time can deepen ecocritical work offers an innovative and engaging approach that will appeal to both ecocritics generally and to medieval and early modern scholars

    Naturkatastrophen sind ein spektakuläres Beispiel für die Ambivalenz des Verhältnisses von Natur und Ordnung. Zum einen gilt die Natur als Modell gesellschaftlich-politischer Ordnung, zum anderen als deren Gegenkraft, von der diese ständig bedroht ist. In Katastrophen wie Erdbeben, Sturmfluten oder auch Epidemien wird diese Latenz zu destruktiver Aktualität, deren Übermacht keine Ordnung gewachsen ist. Zugleich wird selbst dieser Zusammenbruch der Ordnung in Ordnungszusammenhänge eingeschrieben. Als göttliches Strafgericht etwa wird die Katastrophe zum Beleg einer der Natur gebietenden Ordnungsmacht, die umso absoluter erscheint, je verwüstender sie sich manifestiert. Der Band beleuchtet kulturelle Repräsentationen von Naturkatastrophen von der Antike bis in die Neuzeit. Zur Debatte stehen Vorstellungen von göttlicher, natürlicher und politischer Ordnung, die zur Deutung von Katastrophen herangezogen, durch sie bestätigt, in Frage gestellt oder auch unhaltbar werden.

Zum einen gilt die Natur als Modell gesellschaftlich-politischer Ordnung, zum anderen als deren Gegenkraft, von der diese ständig bedroht ist. In Katastrophen wie Erdbeben, Sturmfluten oder auch Epidemien wird diese Latenz zu destruktiver Aktualität, deren Übermacht keine Ordnung gewachsen ist. Zugleich wird selbst dieser Zusammenbruch der Ordnung in Ordnungszusammenhänge eingeschrieben. Als göttliches Strafgericht etwa wird die Katastrophe zum Beleg einer der Natur gebietenden Ordnungsmacht, die umso absoluter erscheint, je verwüstender sie sich manifestiert. Der Band beleuchtet kulturelle Repräsentationen von Naturkatastrophen von der Antike bis in die Neuzeit. Zur Debatte stehen Vorstellungen von göttlicher, natürlicher und politischer Ordnung, die zur Deutung von Katastrophen herangezogen, durch sie bestätigt, in Frage gestellt oder auch unhaltbar werden.

    Premodern Ecologies in the Modern Literary Imagination explores how the cognitive and physical landscapes in which scholars conduct research, write, and teach have shaped their understandings of medieval and Renaissance English literary "oecologies." The collection strives to practice what Ursula K. Heise calls "eco-cosmopolitanism," a method that imagines forms of local environmentalism as a defense against the interventions of open-market global networks. It also expands the idea's possibilities and identifies its limitations through critical studies of premodern texts, artefacts, and environmental history. The essays connect real environments and their imaginative (re)creations and affirm the urgency of reorienting humanity's responsiveness to, and responsibility for, the historical links between human and non-human existence. The discussion of ways in which meditation on scholarly place and time can deepen ecocritical work offers an innovative and engaging approach that will appeal to both ecocritics generally and to medieval and early modern scholars

    In the second half of the twentieth century, the car industry became a lightning rod for debates about human contributions to climate change. Widespread motorisation galvanised the green movements of the 1960s and 1970s, regulators increasingly demanded the use of pollution and climate mitigation technologies, and carmakers responded to this changing consumer and regulatory environment by gradually observing stricter emissions standards and innovating away from combustible engines at the turn of the millennium. This paper traces the arc of the relationship between car manufacturing and climate change through a business historical lens, from the development of internal combustion engines and their alternatives to the political economy of an energy transition and the decision to prioritise electric vehicles. Our analysis aims to lay a foundation for further research on industry and climate change.
