    Untargeted metabolomics experiments for characterizing complex biological samples, conducted with chromatography/mass spectrometry technology, generate large datasets containing very complex and highly variable information. Many data-processing options are available, however, both commercial and open-source solutions for data processing have limitations, such as vendor platform exclusivity and/or requiring familiarity with diverse programming languages. Data processing of untargeted metabolite data is a particular problem for laboratories that specialize in non-routine mass spectrometry analysis of diverse sample types across humans, animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms. Here, we present MStractor, an R workflow package developed to streamline and enhance pre-processing of metabolomics mass spectrometry data and visualization. MStractor combines functions for molecular feature extraction with user-friendly dedicated GUIs for chromatographic and mass spectromerty (MS) parameter input, graphical quality-control outputs, and descriptive statistics. MStractor performance was evaluated through a detailed comparison with XCMS Online. The MStractor package is freely available on GitHub at the MetabolomicsSA repository.

    This report provides a mapping of existing research that employs online labour market data, covering both online job vacancies (demand side) and online applicant data (CVs) (supply side). We discuss and assess a variety of tools and empirical methods that have been used to address specific disadvantages of this data, such as non-representativeness or fluctuations in data quantity and structure; these may be due to external shocks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. We find that while this research field has expanded rapidly, including with respect to geographical coverage, many empirical studies do not engage with the methodological aspects and weaknesses of online labour market data and take them at face value. We highlight that there are legitimate research approaches, which are inductive in nature, focused on discovering patterns and trends in underlying data. These are by definition less concerned with generalizability of findings, as they have different objectives. For this body of research, online labour market data open new avenues for understanding developments in labour markets. We also argue that biases in online labour market data emerge due to multiple factors. With respect to the order of discrepancies between online labour market data and representative data sources, these are typically not paramount. Different techniques have been adopted to deal with the non-representativeness problem, such as statistical techniques; adapting the research questions and research focus to the quality of data; and use of mixed methods, including qualitative methods, to increase the robustness of results.

    Statistical evidence from 58 countries shows that although people in rural areas are more likely to be in employment than those in urban ones, they also tend to have jobs that can put them at risk of experiencing inadequate labour protection as well as low pay. In particular, rural workers are paid, on average, 24 per cent less than their urban counterparts on an hourly basis, and only half of this gap can be explained by rural-urban discrepancies in education, job experience and occupational category. Developing countries exhibit a relatively wider gap, with the unexplained part also being larger. Furthermore, in many countries, certain groups of rural workers are at greater disadvantage, such as women, who, on average, appear to earn less than men in rural areas. However, institutional and regulatory frameworks, notably those that set minimum wages or seek to promote equal opportunities, can help to reduce labour market-related inequalities across the rural-urban divide.
