    One classical version of cosmological argument, defended famously by Thomas Aquinas and Duns Scotus, deduces the existence of a First Cause from the existence of a particular sort of causal series: one that is ‘essentially ordered’. This argument has received renewed defence in recent work by Feser (2013), Cohoe (2013), and Kerr (2015). I agree with these philosophers that the argument is sound. I believe, however, that the standard defence given of the ECA in these philosophers can be complemented by a formulation that appeals to the powers theory of possibility. This approach to possibility has been defended in recent years by, for example, Pruss (2002), Jacobs (2010), and Vetter (2015). In this article, I show how this modal theory allows us to defend the ECA in a way that is dialectically advantageous as well as clarifying.

    Single mothers often experience precarious financial conditions. However, it is not fully understood to what extent separation is the cause of these conditions versus being their consequence. Estimating an endogenous switching regression model based on a sample of 626 separated and 5,525 non-separated mothers drawn from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) 1984-2018, we disentangle the roles of causation and selection for separated mothers' individual earnings as a measure of economic well-being. Our results indicate that separated mothers increase their working hours and sometimes adjust industry in anticipation of the separation event and afterwards. Adjusting for these processes that can be considered caused by the upcoming event, the positive selection into separation turns negative, while the non-separated are clearly positively selected. Thus, comparing average women with mean characteristics, the actually (non-)separated earn lower (higher) wages than women who are randomly assigned to a (non-)separation scenario. Additionally, the separated are more negatively selected into employment. Robustness checks largely confirm our results against changes in sample composition, eliminated group differences in period distribution, and model specification. Thus, our data support the notion that both chronic strain and crisis-caused factors diminish single mothers' economic well-being. Unobserved traits associated with lower labor market investments and productivity explain part of separated mothers' economic strain after separation.

    Die Literatur des italienischen Barock hat praktisch seit ihrem Entstehen mit heftigen Anfeindungen zu kämpfen. Auch die Literaturwissenschaft des 20. Jahrhunderts bleibt der Literatur des Barock gegenüber zumeist kritisch. Besonders wirkmächtig war hier zweifelsfrei das berühmte Urteil Benedetto Croces, der in seiner pauschalen Charakterisierung der Epoche „il barocco“ als „concetto di [una] particolare forma di bruttezza“ definierte. Die Untersuchung möchte ein differenzierteres Bild der barocken Dichtung- und Dichtungstheorie zeichnen. Dabei geht sie der Frage nach, inwiefern die geistesgeschichtlichen Spannungsverhältnisse der Zeit Theorie und Praxis der Barockliteratur prägen und analysiert dabei insbesondere die epistemologische Dimension der Ästhetik. Im Zentrum steht dabei eine eingehende Analyse des bedeutendsten Theoriewerks der Epoche, Emmanuele Tesauros Cannocchiale Aristotelico sowie Dichtung und Selbstbild des berühmtesten italienischen Barockdichters Giammbattista Marino.

Der Beitrag weist auf die verschiedenen Bedeutungen von 'Moderne' in der Literaturwissenschaft und in den Sozialwissenschaften hin und setzt sie zueinander ins Verhältnis. Aus der Sicht ästhetischer Modernebegriffe werden allzu eindimensionale Fortschritts- und Entwicklungskonzepte von Moderne und Modernisierung kritisch in Frage gestellt. ; The interdisciplinary debate on 'Modernity' and 'Modernisation' very often lacks awareness and knowledge of different disciplinary understandings of the terms. The article highlights disparate concepts of 'Modernity' in Literary Studies and Social Studies and discusses their mutual relations. From the perspective of an aesthetic notion of modernity unidimensional and linear concepts of progress and development are read critically.
