    Zu viele und zu reichliche Mahlzeiten erzeugen körperliches Leid. Diese Erkenntnis setzt eine ungewöhnliche allegorische Erzählung des 15. und 16. Jahrhunderts um: die »Condamnation de Banquet«. Sie schildert das Ränkespiel einer Personifikation des Banketts mit Leib und Leben der Gäste, das das Bankett am Ende freilich selbst mit dem Leben bezahlt. Der Stoff begegnet als imaginäre Beschreibung einer Tapisserie, als Moraltheater und nach 1500 auch als kostspielige Tapisserie-Serien. Die Kultur des Festmahls wird dabei in Frage gestellt und am Ende nach geltenden diätischen Richtlinien von Frau Erfahrung diskutiert. Solche Streitfragen zur Ernährung und damit verbundenen Unsitten haben auch heute nicht an Aktualität verloren. Too many and overly plentiful meals create physical suffering. That is the message of an unusual allegorical tale of the 15th and 16th centuries about the scheming of a personified banquet for the life and limb of his guests, for which he pays with his life in the end. The material comes across as an imaginary description of a tapestry, as moral theatre and, after 1500, also as a series of rich tapestries. The tale questions and discusses the cultural idea of banquets according to the prevailing dietary guidelines of Ms Experience. Such issues about nutrition and the bad habits it can engender have not lost their relevance even today.

    This study draws on critical spatial theory to analyze the earliest archaeological and literary evidence of the triclinium, or Roman dining room, in Early Roman Palestine. It begins by examining the archaeological evidence of triclinia and similar banqueting spaces in Palestine, addressing their dating, their differing settings, and how their appearance and diffusion reflects socioeconomic and cultural changes under Roman influence. Next, it examines literary constructions of banqueting spaces in the Parables of Enoch, Testament of Moses, and “Q Sayings Gospel.” It demonstrates that these sources all seem to envision a triclinium setting in which elites eat, drink, and engage in all sorts of revelry while reclining on couches. The final section is devoted to critical spatial analysis of both the archaeological and literary data. It argues that these sources all evince, in varying ways, the interpenetration of local and global spaces rather than the unilateral “Romanization” of provincial space.
