    The sustained expansion of the life span and the attendant demographic changes in the West have fuelled the production of cultural texts that explore alternative representations of aging and old age. The contributors to this volume show how artists in science-fiction, fantasy and the avant-garde develop visions of late life transformation, improvisation and adaptation to new circumstances. The studies particularly focus on perspectives on aging that challenge the predominant narratives of decline as well as fantasies of eternal youth, as defined by neoliberal notions of health, able-bodiedness, agency, self-improvement, progress, plasticity and productivity.

    Popular culture today manifests itself in a dense network of styles and genres, while the aesthetic preferences of the audience are highly differentiated. Besides, popular culture also implies a diversity of aesthetic strategies, discourses and value systems that traverse the symbolic demarcations between styles and genres and are effective across different artistic fields and individual media. Aesthetic concepts such as camp, retro or trash are expressions of a transgressive mode of production that facilitates a multitude of cross-connections between aesthetic spaces of experience. The volume brings together authors from different disciplines who approach aesthetic concepts in popular culture on a historical, theoretical and methodological level, analyze them on the basis of various aesthetic phenomena, or discuss aspects relevant to their theoretical contextualization, such as the emergence and establishment of artistic practices and aesthetic value systems.

    In Coming Together, Ryan Powell captures the social and political vitality of the first wave of movies made by, for, and about male-desiring men in the United States between World War II and the 1980s. From the underground films of Kenneth Anger and the Gay Girls Riding Club to the gay liberation-era hardcore films and domestic dramas of Joe Gage and James Bidgood, Powell illuminates how central filmmaking and exhibition were to gay socializing and worldmaking. Unearthing scores of films and a trove of film-related ephemera, Coming Together persuasively unsettles popular histories that center Stonewall as a ground zero for gay liberation and visibility.     Alle bisherigen Geschichten der Tragödientheorie haben ihre kritische Strömung verkannt, die auf keinen Fall die Aussöhnung mit dem Schicksal, dem Bestehenden, predigt, sondern eine Ästhetik der revolutionären Praxis formuliert, welche darauf hinzielt, das Element der Freiheit in die vollkommen determinierte Welt hereinzulassen. Diese Ästhetik, deren Elemente sich bei den prominentesten Denkern und Dichtern der Epoche ausfindig machen lassen, gestaltet einerseits die Perzeption von Ereignissen und andererseits das Verhalten von den auf die Ereignisse reagierenden Menschen. Die expliziten Tragödientheorien krönten die philosophischen Ästhetiken, indem sie den Übergang der Theorie (der Absicht) in die Wirklichkeit modellierten, und zwar in den paradoxen Figuren des glücklichen Scheiterns und des schicksalhaften Fehlers. Die Tragödientheorien überprüfen also die Möglichkeiten, wie die immer noch ausbleibende Freiheit in der determinierten Welt des Anschaubaren möglich wäre und finden zur Zeit der Avantgarde eine Lösung in Form eines allgemeinen Festes ohne Rampe, die die positive, anschauliche und kollektive Freiheit verwirklicht.

    Utopian hope and dystopian despair are characteristic features of modernism and the avant-garde. Readings of the avant-garde have frequently sought to identify utopian moments coded in its works and activities as optimistic signs of a possible future social life, or as the attempt to preserve hope against the closure of an emergent dystopian present. The fourth volume of the EAM series, European Avant-Garde and Modernism Studies, casts light on the history, theory and actuality of the utopian and dystopian strands which run through European modernism and the avant-garde from the late 19th to the 21st century. Durch die Einbeziehung von poetologischen Überlegungen, in denen die Musik vernachlässigt, übergangen oder angegriffen wird, nimmt die Studie die Bedeutung des romantischen Musikbegriffs für die Poetik um 1900 auch dort in den Blick, wo sie bisher übersehen wurde. Klappentext englisch: This book demonstrates that poetics around 1900 employs the Romantic concept of music in order to develop techniques with which to represent the ineffable. It investigates the foundations of the Romantic notion in poetics research that the ineffable comes to the fore in musical arrangements of autonomous tones, and examines the reception of this notion in George, Hofmannsthal, Rilke and avant-garde poetics against the backdrop of symbolism, linguistic criticism and musical aesthetics. By including texts from poetics in which music is neglected, ignored or attacked, the book also highlights traces of the Romantic concept of music in areas where it has been overlooked so far.

Sie beleuchtet poetologische Grundlagen der romantischen Vorstellung von einer Anordnung autonomer Töne, in der sich das Unsagbare ausspreche und untersucht die Rezeption dieser Vorstellung bei George, Hofmannsthal, Rilke und in der Poetik der Avantgarde vor dem Hintergrund von Symbolismus, Sprachkritik und Musikästhetik. Durch die Einbeziehung von poetologischen Überlegungen, in denen die Musik vernachlässigt, übergangen oder angegriffen wird, nimmt die Studie die Bedeutung des romantischen Musikbegriffs für die Poetik um 1900 auch dort in den Blick, wo sie bisher übersehen wurde. This book demonstrates that poetics around 1900 employs the Romantic concept of music in order to develop techniques with which to represent the ineffable. It investigates the foundations of the Romantic notion in poetics research that the ineffable comes to the fore in musical arrangements of autonomous tones, and examines the reception of this notion in George, Hofmannsthal, Rilke and avant-garde poetics against the backdrop of symbolism, linguistic criticism and musical aesthetics. By including texts from poetics in which music is neglected, ignored or attacked, the book also highlights traces of the Romantic concept of music in areas where it has been overlooked so far.

Die Studie von Matthias Löwe rekonstruiert den modernen Diskurs über Mythos und Monotheismus und sein ästhetisches Potential, das vor allem im frühen 20. Jahrhundert freigesetzt wird, bei Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Gerhart Hauptmann, Arnold Schönberg und Thomas Mann. Mit der Ästhetisierung von Mythos und Monotheismus verfolgen diese Intellektuellen keine religionsgeschichtlichen Interessen. Vielmehr wird im Gewand literarisierter Mythen oder biblischer Geschichten um die Deutung der Moderne gerungen. Around 1900, the history of European ideas shows a growing fascination with the contrast between myth and monotheism, between the many gods and the one God. In the mirror of this ancient topos, fundamental questions of modernity are reflected: the relationship between immanence and transcendence, heteronomy and freedom, tolerance and dogma. Matthias Löwe's study reconstructs the modern discourse on myth and monotheism and its aesthetic potential, which is released especially in the early 20th century, in Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Gerhart Hauptmann, Arnold Schönberg, and Thomas Mann. In aestheticizing myth and monotheism, these intellectuals are not pursuing interests in the history of religion. Rather, in the guise of literary myths or biblical stories, they struggle to interpret modernity.

    Die Tschechoslowakei bildete sich 1918 als ein neuer demokratischer Staat in Europa. Künstlerinnen und Künstler nahezu aller Bereiche entwickelten in den Folgejahren visionäre Ideen. Die tschechische Avantgarde-Bewegung durchzog nicht nur die bildende Kunst, sondern auch die Architektur, Literatur, Poesie, Musik, das Theater und den Film. Die Publikation zur Ausstellung im Bröhan-Museum gibt einen Überblick über die wichtigsten Strömungen der tschechischen Moderne. Ausgehend vom tschechischen Kubismus und dem Surrealismus über Architektur, Möbeldesign und Fotografie wird die lebendige Kunst- und Designgeschichte Tschechiens vermittelt. In einer kleinen diachronen Diskursanalyse lässt sich zeigen, dass sich seit der Französischen Revolution im deutschsprachigen Raum vier Diskurse der Subversion nebeneinander gestellt haben: Im politisch-institutionellen Diskurs wird Subversion als revolutionärer Staatsumsturz verstanden; im künstlerisch-avantgardistischen Diskurs lässt sich Subversion als künstlerisch-prozessuale Bewegung beschreiben; im subkulturellen Diskurs als minoritäre Distinktion und im poststrukturalistischen Diskurs als Dekonstruktion. Diese Diskurse der Subversion bilden als Multitude (Negri/ Hardt) bzw. rhizomatische Bewegung (Deleuze/ Guattari) - bei allen Distinktionsbewegungen untereinander - eine neue Widerstandsbewegung, deren Praxen und Strategien sich jedoch immer wieder in Aporien verfangen und absorbiert werden. ; The term subversion has multiple meanings and has shown its productivity for alternative political concepts during the last two decades, when the processes of globalization and the formation of a society of control made forms of critique necessary that had to be more flexible. By a minor diachronic discourse analysis it can be shown that four discourses of subversion have been established and still coexist: In the institutional discourse of politics subversion is understood as a revolutionary overthrow of the state; in the artistic discourse of the avant-garde subversion can be described as an artistic and procedural movement; in the subcultural discourse it appears as the distinction of a minority and in the poststructuralist discourse as deconstruction.
