It travels from farms where the crops won’t grow to towns where the Yiddish-speaking protagonist falls in love, befriends sons of German immigrants, studies philosophy with the Jesuits, and becomes an important member of Brazil’s literary world.     Nach Jahrzehnten scheinbarer Stabilität stolpert Europa in jüngster Zeit von Krise zu Krise. Hier zeigen sich die Folgen einer einseitigen Geschichtsaufarbeitung, die nach dem Mauerfall postfaschistische und postsozialistische Narrative zu einer westlich-kapitalistischen Erfolgsgeschichte verband, während die koloniale Vergangenheit unbeachtet blieb.Fatima El-Tayeb zeigt die Auswirkungen dieses Prozesses anhand des Beispiels deutscher Identität: Immer wieder werden rassifizierte Gruppen - insbesondere Schwarze, Roma und Muslime - als »undeutsch« produziert, als Gruppen, die nicht nur nicht zur nationalen Gemeinschaft gehören, sondern diese durch ihre Anwesenheit gefährden. Ein postmigrantisches Deutschland braucht daher nicht nur neue Zukunftsvisionen, sondern auch neue Vergangenheitsnarrative. The reformulation of European history post the fall of the Berlin Wall connected post-fascist and post-socialist narratives to a Western capitalist success story. A third factor however remained absent, which could have likewise used a re-evaluation: the colonial past. Fatima El-Tayeb approaches the current conflicts around German identity through their historical contextualization, and the question of their gaps. She investigates the effects of these unbalanced processes of coming to terms with history by way of the production of three racialized groups - black people, the Roma and Muslims - as »Un-German«. Thus showing that a post-migrant Germany not only needs open visions of the future, but also new historical narratives.

    Wolfgang Hegener vermittelt einen umfassenden Einblick in das psychoanalytische Verständnis der vier Grundformen des abendländischen Antisemitismus: den christlichen Antijudaismus, den rassistischen, den sekundären sowie den islamistischen Antisemitismus. Es wird gezeigt, dass weder die vorchristliche Antike noch nicht-christliche Religionen wie der klassische Islam einen strikten Antisemitismus kannten. Er entstand in der Tradition des Christentums, sein zentrales Motiv liegt in der aggressiven und projektiven Schuldabwehr, seine Urszene in der Behauptung, »die Juden« seien Gottesmörder. Der Autor stellt dar, dass dieser Schuldvorwurf zwar historisch variiert wird, aber in seiner Grundstruktur erhalten bleibt. Des Weiteren untersucht er kritisch die Frage, ob nationalsozialistische Täter tatsächlich »ganz normale Männer« ohne jedes antisemitische Motiv waren. Er widmet sich außerdem der Entwicklung der psychoanalytischen Theoriebildung über den Antisemitismus in Westdeutschland anhand einer Analyse des Klassikers der Vergangenheitsbewältigung Die Unfähigkeit zu trauern von Margarete und Alexander Mitscherlich.

    We study the stock market performance of firms with Jewish board members during the "Dreyfus Affair" in 19th century France. In a context of widespread latent antisemitism, initial accusations made against the Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus led to short-lived abnormal negative returns for Jewish-connected firms. However, investors betting on these firms earned higher returns during the period corresponding to Dreyfus' rehabilitation, starting with the publication of the famous op-ed J'Accuse! in 1898. Our conceptual framework illustrates how diminishing antisemitic biases among investors might plausibly explain these effects. Our paper provides novel insights on how antisemitism can increase and decrease over short periods of time at the highest socio-economic levels in response to certain events, which in turn can affect firm value in financial markets.

    The success of the Israeli vampire-crime-comedy series Juda is not at all trivial, to say the least. It dared to adopt a controversial subgenre that is associated with antisemitism and blood libels. Moreover, it deals with social traumas and the ethnic conflict between the Zionist Ashkenazi hegemony and the Mizrahi sector, which accuses the hegemony of oppression and discrimination. Juda expresses a critical agenda: a dissolution of Zionist values as the only solution and chance for redemption, both for the hero and for society. Thus, despite emerging at a time when the horror genre had experienced a late blooming on Israeli screens, its appearance is connected to two other central processes in contemporary Israeli film and television: the incorporation of religion and the ascendancy of the Mizrahi hero. Juda overcomes the inherent problem in the image of the Jewish vampire—first by creating a distinction between a Jewish vampire and a gentile vampire, and second by having a protagonist who is a Mizrahi Jew.

    Antisemitism has emerged as a key concept of the Hungarian sociopolitical vocabulary during the last decades when it has been chiefly employed by its critics. The paper lists four main reasons that are in turn historical, transnational, intellectual and political behind the much increased importance of this concept. Through the methods of conceptual history, it subsequently aims to show that the meaning of antisemitism has undergone significant changes since the fall of the communist regime. The three most important semantic shifts identified are its moralization, extension and politicization. While moralization is meant to indicate the complete unacceptability of antisemitism, its extended conception tends to depict it as a most complex and dangerous form of prejudice. Both the moralized and extended conception of antisemitism was also politically employed by Hungarian left liberals to contest the legitimacy of the conservative rightist forces. The latter have in turn aimed to redefine antisemitism as a political as much as a social or cultural issue, thereby contributing to its further politicization. More recent years have also brought about the visible revival of antisemitism – in spite of the concept having been recurrently and critically used in public discussions of recent decades.
