    In den letzten Jahrzehnten haben sich die literaturwissenschaftlichen Fächer für kultur- und mediengeschichtliche Fragestellungen geöffnet. Das führt zu einer Erweiterung des Literaturbegriffs, zur Aufhebung der Differenz zwischen Hoch- und Populärkultur sowie zu neuen literatur- und medientheoretischen Überlegungen. Diesen Veränderungen geht die Anthologie exemplarisch an einem konkreten Beispiel nach: Im Zentrum der interdisziplinären Beiträge, die film- und literaturwissenschaftliche Aspekte mit kulturvergleichenden Ansätzen verbinden, steht Quentin Tarantinos Film "Kill Bill".

Romane, Sachbücher, Filme, Serien oder Podcasts, die sich mit realen oder fiktiven Morden, Betrugsaktionen oder spektakulären Diebstählen beschäftigen, finden ein breites Publikum und werden oft zum Gegenstand der öffentlichen Faszination. Die Beiträge des Bandes spüren diesem narrativen Bedürfnis nach und stellen die Frage, was es ästhetisch und ethisch bedeutet, dass die Kriminalerzählung zur Leitgattung der Gegenwart geworden ist. ; Contemporary culture is characterised by a peculiar desire for crime narratives. Novels, non-fiction books, films, TV series or podcasts that deal with real or fictional murders, acts of fraud or spectacular thefts attract a wide audience and often become the object of public fascination. The contributions to this volume trace this hunger for crime stories and evaluate both the aesthetic and ethical significance of them having become one of today's leading narrative genres.

Die aus vier Kontinenten stammenden Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger befassen sich mit der Frage, inwiefern die Fähigkeit, ästhetische, sprachliche und kulturelle Übergänge angesichts hoher Heterogenität hervorzubringen, Europa am ehesten ausmacht. Von Fatou Diome bis Yoko Tawada, von mehrsprachigen Räumen wie Siebenbürgen bis zur Mährischen Walachei untersuchen sie Texte, Semantiken und kulturelle Praktiken des Übergangs. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf der deutsch-jüdischen Literatur, der Erinnerung an den Holocaust sowie postkolonialen Perspektiven.

    Abstract ; Die Entwicklungsschübe der modernen Medien im 20. Jahrhundert haben die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen den Künsten, den Medien, den Sinnesmodalitäten, den verbalen und nonverbalen Ausdrucks- und Zeichenprozessen verstärkt und erweitert. Im Zuge dieser Entwicklungen sind Genre- und Formatfragen über das disziplinäre Interesse einzelner Kunst- und Medienwissenschaften hinaus ins Aufmerksamkeitsfeld einer vergleichenden Medienästhetik und -dramaturgie ge-rückt. Aufbauend auf den Erkenntnissen von Kalisch 2014, 2016 und den Überlegungen Gaudreaults 2009 zu einer Unterscheidung zwischen Narration und Monstration, ist es gelungen ein Modell zur Analyse von Werken unter dem Ausgangspunkt von Dramaturgie und Präsentationsstruktur herauszubilden, das für jedwedes dramaturgisch motiviertes und fiktionales Werk verwendet werden kann, unab-hängig vom Medium. Als Mittel zur Verdeutlichung der Thesen wird Horror als ästhetische Kategorie definiert, die einen direkten Einfluss auf die narrativen Strukturen eines Werkes besitzt, was den narrativ-monstrativen Doppelcharakter von Werken belegt und ferner verdeutlicht, dass Erzählung und Formung eines Werkes untrennbar verbunden sind. Die Dualität von Dramaturgie und Präsenta-tionsstruktur wird in der Formung eines Werkes offenbar. Um dies zu verdeutli-chen, werden im Verlauf der Arbeit kursorisch Beispiele von Werken mit Schre-ckensinhalten diskutiert und analysiert. Basierend auf diesem Modell wird eine Diskussion des Themenkomplexes von Intermedialität und Transmedialität im Spannungsverhältnis zur Komparistik der Künste durchgeführt. In der Folge wird eine Ästhetik des Schreckens diskutiert und anhand von ästhetischen Wertungskategorien aufgezeigt. Abschließend werden drei narrativ-motivierte Konzeptionen für dramaturgisch angetriebene Schre-ckensinszenierungen aufgeführt, die zur Kategorisierung von Werken angewendet werden können: düstere Präfiguration, düstere Konfiguration und düstere Manifestation. ; Abstract ; The development in modern media during the 20th century (from movies over television to the hybrid forms of audiovisual and textual media in the internet) reveals interdependencies between art, media, the modalities of senses, the verbal and nonverbal dictions and semiotic processes that have evolved and expanded themselfes. According to this progress the interest in art and media studies should achive a collective interest in the changes of genre and formats, instead of a sepa-rated observation of only single disciplines. Following the Prolegomena on a comperative drama of media by Eleonore Ka-lisch (Kalisch 2014) and the thougts of André Gaudreault on Narration and Mon-stration (Gaudreault 2009) this thesis bulids a system to analyse works of fiction (e. g. movies, pictures, literature, video games). This system allows to analyse and compare works of fiction based on drama and presentation structure. The horror genre is used to show the mechanics of this system. Horror has a direct influence on the narrative structure of a work and manifests a duality of narration and mon-stration (Kalisch 2016), that binds drama and presentation to each other and shows the necessity of a separated consideration on both aspects. The duality of drama and presentation reveals itself during the modeling of a work of fiction. Build on the system the discourse is open to discuss intermetiality and transmedi-ality and their influence on the field of interest. Furthermore, an aesthetic of hor-ror is defined by evaluation categories of aesthetic indicators. In the end three types of narrativ driven concepts of horror are revealed and discussed: gloomy pre-figuaration, gloomy configuration and gloomy manifestation.

    Schillers Anthropologie und die Philosophische Anthropologie – dahinter stehen zwei Denksysteme mit zahlreichen Parallelen. Während den Theorien selbst in den letzten Jahrzehnten große Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wurde, ist die Analogie zwischen ihnen bislang nur wenig erforscht. Die Studie nutzt Schlüsselbegriffe und konstante Denkfiguren, die aus den Werken Schelers, Plessners und Gehlens herausgearbeitet und vor ihrem wissenschaftlichen wie gesellschaftlichen Hintergrund erklärt werden, zu dem heuristischen Zweck einer Neuinterpretation der schillerschen Philosophie vom Menschen. So deckt der typologische Vergleich zwischen den Schriften des späten 18. und des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts strukturelle Parallelen ihrer gedanklichen Konfliktsituationen auf und macht Schillers Theorie vom Menschen als spezifische Philosophie der Moderne begreiflich, die auf die Krisenerfahrungen ihrer Epoche mit einer ästhetischen Anthropologie der Freiheit unter der Bedingung menschlicher Lebendigkeit antwortet.     In the third Critique Kant details an aesthetic operation of judgment that is surprising considering how judgment functioned in the first Critique. In this book, I defend an understanding of Kant’s theory of Geschmacksurteil as detailing an operation of the faculties that does not violate the cognitive structure laid out in the first Critique. My orientation is primarily epistemological, elaborating the determinations that govern the activity of pure aesthetic judging that specify it as a "bestimmte" type of judgment without transforming it into "ein bestimmendes Urteil". I focus on identifying how the logical functions from the table of judgments operate in the pure aesthetic judgment of taste to reveal "the moments to which this power of judgment attends in its reflection" (CPJ, 5:203). In the course of doing so, a picture emerges of how the world is not just cognizable in a Kantian framework but also charged with human feeling, acquiring the inexhaustible, inchoate meaningfulness that incites "much thinking" (CPJ, 5:315). The universal communicability of aesthetic pleasure serves as the foundation that grounds robust intersubjective relations, enabling genuine connection to others through a shared a priori feeling

Person so conceived was discovered to be a four-dimensional creature: a composite of mind or 'inner' personality; of the body and outward appearance; of social relationship; and of time. Through a series of case studies keyed to a wide variety of social and cultural contexts, including theatre, the early novel, the art of portraiture, pictorial experiments in vision and perception, theory of knowledge, and the new experimental science of the late-seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the book examines the manifold shapes person assumed as an expression of the social, natural, and aesthetic 'experiments' or experiences to which it found itself subjected as a function of the mere contingent fact of just having them

    The Storm at Sea: Political Aesthetics in the Time of Shakespeare counters a tradition of cultural analysis that judges considerations of aesthetic autonomy in the early modern context to be either anachronistic or an index of political disengagement. Pye argues that for a post-theocratic era in which the mise-en-forme of the social domain itself was for the first time at stake, the problem of the aesthetic lay at the very core of the political; it is precisely through its engagement with the question of aesthetic autonomy that early modern works most profoundly explore their relation to matters of law, state, sovereignty, and political subjectivity.Pye establishes the significance of a "creationist" political aesthetic—at once a discrete historical category and a phenomenon that troubles our familiar forms of historical accounting—and suggests that the fate of such an aesthetic is intimately bound up with the emergence of modern conceptions of the political sphere.The Storm at Sea moves historically from Leonardo da Vinci to Thomas Hobbes; it focuses on Shakespeare and English drama, with chapters on Hamlet, Othello, A Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest, as well as sustained readings of As You Like It, King Lear, Thomas Kyd’s Spanish Tragedy, and Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus.     This book examines the affinity between "theory" and "deconstruction" that developed in the American academy in the 1970s by way of the "Yale Critics": Harold Bloom, Paul de Man, Geoffrey Hartman, and J. Hillis Miller, sometimes joined by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida.With this semi-fictional collective, theory became a media event, first in the academy and then in the wider print media, in and through its phantasmatic link with deconstruction and with "Yale." The important role played by aesthetic humanism in American pedagogical discourse provides a context for understanding theory as an aesthetic scandal, and an examination of the ways in which de Man’s work challenges aesthetic pieties helps us understand why, by the 1980s, he above all had come to personify "theory."Combining a broad account of the "Yale Critics" phenomenon with a series of careful reexaminations of the event of theory, Redfield traces the threat posed by language’s unreliability and inhumanity in chapters on lyric, on Hartman’s representation of the Wordsworthian imagination, on Bloom’s early theory of influence in the 1970s together with his later media reinvention as the genius of the Western Canon, and on John Guillory’s influential attempt to interpret de Manian theory as a symptom of literature’s increasing marginality. A final chapter examines Mark Tansey’s paintings Derrida Queries de Man and Constructing the Grand Canyon, paintings that offer subtle, complex reflections on the peculiar event of theory-as-deconstruction in America

    Shakespeare as a Way of Life shows how reading Shakespeare helps us to live with epistemological weakness and even to practice this weakness, to make it a way of life. In a series of close readings, Kuzner shows how Hamlet, Lucrece, Othello, The Winter’s Tale, The Tempest, and Timon of Athens, impel us to grapple with basic uncertainties: how we can be free, whether the world is abundant, whether we have met the demands of love and social life.To Kuzner, Shakespeare’s skepticism doesn’t have the enabling potential of Keats’s heroic "negativity capability," but neither is that skepticism the corrosive disease that necessarily issues in tragedy. While sensitive to both possibilities, Kuzner offers a way to keep negative capability negative while making skepticism livable. Rather than light the way to empowered, liberal subjectivity, Shakespeare’s works demand lasting disorientation, demand that we practice the impractical so as to reshape the frames by which we view and negotiate the world.The act of reading Shakespeare cannot yield the practical value that cognitive scientists and literary critics attribute to it. His work neither clarifies our sense of ourselves, of others, or of the world; nor heartens us about the human capacity for insight and invention; nor sharpens our ability to appreciate and adjudicate complex problems of ethics and politics. Shakespeare’s plays, rather, yield cognitive discomforts, and it is just these discomforts that make them worthwhile

    Euripides’ Electra opened up for its audience an opportunity to become self-aware as to the appeal of tragic Kunstsprache: it both reflected and sustained traditional, aristocratically-inflected assumptions about the continuity of appearance and substance, even in a radical democracy. A complex analogy between social and aesthetic valuation is played out and brought to light. The characterization of Orestes early in the play demonstrates how social appearances made clear the identity of well-born, and how they were still assumed to indicate superior virtue and agency. On the aesthetic side of the analogy, one of the functions of tragic diction, as an essential indication of heroic character and agency, comes into view in a dramatic and thematic sequence that begins with Achilles ode and ends with the planning of the murders. Serious doubts are created as to whether Orestes will realize the assumed potential inherent in his heroic genealogy and, at the same time, as to whether the components of his character as an aesthetic construct are congruent with such qualities and agency. Both sides of this complex analogy are thus problematized, and, at a metapoetic level, its nature and bases are exposed for reflection

This book aims to account for the various interpretations of Kant's notion of aesthetic judgment formulated in the last century.     Repositioning Mavis Gallant as a late modernist figure, this book interrogates the Paris-based Canadian expatriate at the juncture of multiple, transnational interacting fields. Marta Dvořák draws on private correspondence and conversations with the Gallant who loved pictures, films, and music to examine her relations with the arts and to interrogate how modernity’s aesthetic systems meet within a transcontinental cultural context. Deploying philosophical aesthetics, Dvořák identifies the formal painterly, cinematic, and musical dynamics which light up Gallant’s writing. Dvořák opens a dialogue between Gallant and other international modernists and also with those they were reading, watching, and listening to. These range from the moving pictures which shaped her generation to the rhythm and dissonance of modernist compositions and jazz, which – like the Cubist rupture with academic spatial perspective – spearheaded modernity’s aesthetics of dislocation. How does Gallant’s work work? The analogies drawn between Gallant and certain European filmmakers provide a visual key to the writer’s sleights-of-hand and tonal shifts. Through hands-on analyses focusing on the eye and the ear, Dvořák investigates the osmosis between Gallant’s texts (including her critically neglected novels) and both music and visual culture. The adventurous close readings offer guiding interpretive keys to readers dazzled or puzzled by "a writers’ writer."
