    Abstract ; In dem literaturwissenschaftlichen Beitrag geht es um die Produktion und Kritik des Wissensobjekts ‚Geschlecht‘ unter besonderer Berücksichtigung textueller Eigenarten des poetischen Realismus und der Konstruktion literarischer Zeichen-Körper. Im Rahmen einer gendered narratology werden spezifische Konfigurierungstypen modernen Erzählens identifiziert, die den Fokus der Analyse auf ökonomisierte und vergeschlechtlichte Strukturierungsweisen verschieben. Anhand von Gottfried Kellers Roman „Martin Salander“ (1886) werden die Materialisierungsvorgänge von Geld am männlichen Körper nachgezeichnet, um abschließend herauszuarbeiten, wie dieser Männlichkeitsentwurf mit der Struktur des Romans und dessen Schluss korreliert. Ziel ist es, dekonstruierende Erzählweisen in Kellers Werk auszumachen, die in der Verschaltung von Geschlecht, Geld und Text bereits frühe Formen der Kapitalismus- und Vergeschlechtlichungskritik offenbaren.

    Bringing together leading scholars of literature, history, library studies, and communications, Print Culture Histories Beyond the Metropolis rejects the idea that print culture necessarily spreads outwards from capitals and cosmopolitan cities and focuses attention to how the residents of smaller cities, provincial districts, rural settings, and colonial outposts have produced, disseminated, and read print materials.Too often print media has been represented as an engine of metropolitan modernity. Rather than being the passive recipients of print culture generated in city centres, the inhabitants of provinces and colonies have acted independently, as jobbing printers in provincial Britain, black newspaper proprietors in the West Indies, and library patrons in "Middletown," Indiana, to mention a few examples. This important new book gives us a sophisticated account of how printed materials circulated, a more precise sense of their impact, and a fuller of understanding of how local contexts shaped reading experiences

    Schon zu Lebzeiten hat der deutsche Archäologe und Kunsthistoriker Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768) europaweit Resonanz gefunden. Seine Geschichte der Kunst des Altertums (1764) wurde vor 1800 zweimal ins Italienische und gleich dreimal ins Französische übersetzt. Winckelmann war damit ein europäischer Klassiker, noch bevor er am Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts von Weimar aus zu einem deutschen Klassiker gemacht wurde. Ziel des vorliegenden Bandes ist es, die bislang wenig erforschte Wirkungsgeschichte seines Werkes in Italien vor dem Hintergrund seiner europäischen Rezeption zu untersuchen. Am Beispiel Winckelmanns wird damit der Versuch unternommen, ein nationales Rezeptionsphänomen mit einer europäischen Perspektive zu kombinieren. Deutlich wird dabei, dass die italienische Winckelmann-Rezeption vor allem deshalb komplex ist, weil sie immer in Kenntnis von und mit Blick auf die Winckelmann-Rezeption in anderen europäischen Ländern - insbesondere in Deutschland und Frankreich - stattfindet: Rezeptionsgeschichte kann hier nur als eine Geschichte von Verflechtungen geschrieben werden

    Metabolische und digestive Denkfiguren prägen die Rede über Literatur und ihre Lektüre. Es gilt, den ‚Stoff zu verdauen‘ und ‚sacken zu lassen‘, oder man lässt sich bemerkenswerte Stellen ‚auf der Zunge zergehen‘. Fiktionale wie non-fiktionale Texte laborieren geradezu am Nahrungs-, Stoffwechsel- und Verdauungswissen und deren kultursemiotischen Implikationen. Unter dem Schlagwort „Ars metabolica“ untersucht der Band Figurationen von Einverleibung und Diätetik, Transformation und Verwertung, Zirkulation und Exkretion. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Verdauung und Verkostung weitaus mehr sind als Metaphern und Kultur von ihren jeweiligen Resten gedacht werden muss. Historisch reichen die Untersuchungen von der Aufklärung bis zur Gegenwartsliteratur. Metabolic and digestive concepts shape how we speak about literature and reading. It is a matter of 'digesting' the material and 'letting it sink in' or letting remarkable passages 'melt in one's mouth'. Fictional as well as non-fictional texts virtually labour on the knowledge of food, metabolism and digestion and their cultural semiotic implications. Under the heading of ‘Ars metabolica’, this book examines depictions of consumption and dietetics, transformation and utilisation, and circulation and excretion. It becomes apparent that digestion and metabolism are far more than metaphors and that culture must be thought of in terms of their respective residues. Historically, the articles in this study address topics from the Enlightenment to contemporary literature.

    In dem literaturwissenschaftlichen Beitrag geht es um die Produktion und Kritik des Wissensobjekts ‚Geschlecht‘ unter besonderer Berücksichtigung textueller Eigenarten des poetischen Realismus und der Konstruktion literarischer Zeichen-Körper. Im Rahmen einer gendered narratology werden spezifische Konfigurierungstypen modernen Erzählens identifiziert, die den Fokus der Analyse auf ökonomisierte und vergeschlechtlichte Strukturierungsweisen verschieben. Anhand von Gottfried Kellers Roman „Martin Salander“ (1886) werden die Materialisierungsvorgänge von Geld am männlichen Körper nachgezeichnet, um abschließend herauszuarbeiten, wie dieser Männlichkeitsentwurf mit der Struktur des Romans und dessen Schluss korreliert. Ziel ist es, dekonstruierende Erzählweisen in Kellers Werk auszumachen, die in der Verschaltung von Geschlecht, Geld und Text bereits frühe Formen der Kapitalismus- und Vergeschlechtlichungskritik offenbaren.

    Metabolische und digestive Denkfiguren prägen die Rede über Literatur und ihre Lektüre. Es gilt, den ‚Stoff zu verdauen‘ und ‚sacken zu lassen‘, oder man lässt sich bemerkenswerte Stellen ‚auf der Zunge zergehen‘. Fiktionale wie non-fiktionale Texte laborieren geradezu am Nahrungs-, Stoffwechsel- und Verdauungswissen und deren kultursemiotischen Implikationen. Unter dem Schlagwort „Ars metabolica“ untersucht der Band Figurationen von Einverleibung und Diätetik, Transformation und Verwertung, Zirkulation und Exkretion. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Verdauung und Verkostung weitaus mehr sind als Metaphern und Kultur von ihren jeweiligen Resten gedacht werden muss. Historisch reichen die Untersuchungen von der Aufklärung bis zur Gegenwartsliteratur. Metabolic and digestive concepts shape how we speak about literature and reading. It is a matter of 'digesting' the material and 'letting it sink in' or letting remarkable passages 'melt in one's mouth'. Fictional as well as non-fictional texts virtually labour on the knowledge of food, metabolism and digestion and their cultural semiotic implications. Under the heading of ‘Ars metabolica’, this book examines depictions of consumption and dietetics, transformation and utilisation, and circulation and excretion. It becomes apparent that digestion and metabolism are far more than metaphors and that culture must be thought of in terms of their respective residues. Historically, the articles in this study address topics from the Enlightenment to contemporary literature.

    Placed at the intersection of art, media, and cultural studies as well as economic theory, Liquidity, Flows, Circulation investigates the cultural logic of environmentalization. As flows, circulations, and liquidity resurface in all aspects of recent culture and contemporary art, this volume investigates the hypothesis of a genuine cultural logic of environmentalization through these three concepts. It thus brings together two areas of research that have been largely separate. On the one hand, this volume takes up discussions about ecologies with and without nature and environmentalization as a contemporary form of power and capital. On the other hand, it takes its cue from Fredric Jameson's notion that each stage of capitalism is accompanied by a genuine cultural logic. The volume introduces this current of materialist thinking into the ongoing discussions of ecologies and environmentalization. By analyzing contemporary art, architecture, theater, films, and literature, the fifteen contributions by scholars and artists explore different fields where liquid forms, semantics flow, or processes of circulation emerge as a contemporary cultural logic.
