Publisher description: A valuable resource for the specialist, this volume also provides the general reader a glimpse into the lives of educated women in the 1920s and 30s in China through material seldom available in English. The women writers who tell their stories here broke boldly with tradition, taking the first steps in the formation of a new image of modern Chinese womanhood. Janet Ng's introduction draws comparisons with Western women's experience while making clear the authors' achievements in the development of modern Chinese literature. Short biographical sketches of each of the seven authors are also included.

Inhalt: Introduction / Janet Ng -- Hsiu Hsiu / Lin Hui-yin, translated by Janet Ng -- My Childhood Pursuit of Education: In Memory of My Uncle, Mr Chuang Szu-chien / Ch'en Heng-che, translated by Janet Ng -- Mother / Yü T'ien, translated by Janet Ng -- Amid the Sound of Firecrackers on New Year's Eve / Shih P'ing-mei, translated by Janet Ng -- Wanderings (excerpts) / Lu Ching-ch'ing, translated by Amy Dooling -- Autobiography (excerpts) / Lu Yin, translated by Kristina Torgeson -- Going Home / Su Ch'ing, translated by Janet Ng.

Verlagsangaben: In December 1941, the fifth year in an all-scale cataclysmic Sino-Japanese war that devoured much of Eastern China, the city of Shanghai entered into an era of full occupation. This was the moment when a group of young women authors began writing and soon took over the cultural scene of the besieged metropolis. Women, War, Domesticity reconstructs cultures of reading, writing, and publishing in the city of Shanghai during the three years and eight months of Japanese occupation. It specifically depicts the formation of a new cultural arena initiated by a group of women who not only wrote, edited, and published, but also took part in defining and transforming the structure of modern knowledge, discussing it in various public forums surrounding the print media, and, consequently, promoting themselves as authoritative cultural commentators of the era.

Fong and E. Widmer -- Bibliography /G. Fong and E. Widmer -- Index /G. Fong and E. Widmer. Only recently has the enormous literary output of women writers of the Ming and Qing periods (1368-1911) been rediscovered. Through these valuable texts, we apprehend in ways not possible earlier the complexity of women’s experiences in the inner quarters and their varied responses to challenges facing state and society. Writing in many genres, women engaged with topics as varied as war, travel, illness, love, friendship, female heroism, and religion. Drawing on a library of newly digitized resources, this volume's eleven chapters describe, analyze, and theorize these materials. They question previous assumptions about women’s lives and abilities, open up new critical space in Chinese literary history and offer new perspectives on China’s culture and society. “This volume rewrites the history of Chinese women’s literature by taking a truly inter-disciplinary (instead of merely multi-disciplinary) approach. In so doing, it ends up illuminating the centrality of writing women to the social, political, and intellectual lives of the Chinese empire from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries.” Prof. Dorothy Ko, Barnard College, Columbia University, author of Cinderella's Sisters: A Revisionist History of Footbinding (California, 2005)

"This is the first study to analyze the gendered ideologies of Chinese print media and political culture in a single work. It employs media analysis to examine the way paratexts create and reproduce gendered norms, especially through persistent material and discursive mechanisms that framed women authors and their textual production. Though a plethora of women's voices resonated throughout the literary publications, journals, and newspapers, these voices were framed by print media's apparatus that marked women as belonging to a sphere of difference. This marked difference highlights a contradictory outcome of women's emancipation and gender equality" ...

This volume rewrites the history of Chinese womens literature by taking a truly inter-disciplinary (instead of merely multi-disciplinary) approach. In so doing, it ends up illuminating the centrality of writing women to the social, political, and intellectual lives of the Chinese empire from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries
