    ger: In der Zwischenkriegszeit waren AutorInnen mit der Herausforderung konfrontiert, literarische Werke in einer Welt zu verfassen, die sich drastisch verändert hatte und in der viele der alten Regeln und Wertvorstellungen keine Geltung mehr hatten. Viele britische BürgerInnen erlitten während des Krieges schwere persönliche Verluste und versuchten sich immer noch an die neue, härtere Realität zu gewöhnen, was auch in der Literatur dieser Zeit reflektiert wird. Deswegen befassen sich viele Romane, die zwischen den Weltkriegen geschrieben wurden, mit dem Motiv der Desillusionierung. In der vorliegenden Diplomarbeit werden vier Romane aus der Zwischenkriegszeit unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Aspekts der Desillusionierung analysiert. Diese Romane sind Virginia Woolfs Mrs. Dalloway, Rebecca Wests The Return of the Soldier, Christopher Isherwoods The Memorial und Richard Aldingtons Death of a Hero. Die Analyse zeigt, wie das Motiv der Desillusionierung, das in den Romanen auftritt, sich in Form der Entfremdung von Charakteren, traumatisierter Soldaten, veränderter Werte und geänderter Familienstrukturen manifestiert und lotet die generelle Wahrnehmung der Auswirkungen des ersten Weltkriegs aus. eng: In the interwar time British authors were faced with the challenge of having to create literary works in a drastically changed world, in which many of the old rules and values did not apply anymore. Many British citizens had experienced unprecedented hardships during the war and were still trying to become accustomed to a new, more difficult reality. This is also reflected in the literature of the time. Thus, the majority of the literature that was produced between the wars shares the theme of disillusionment. This diploma thesis analyses the way four selected novels examine this theme. The novels in question are Virginia Woolfs Mrs. Dalloway, Rebecca Wests The Return of the Soldier, Christopher Isherwoods The Memorial, and Richard Aldingtons Death of a Hero. The analysis uncovers how this theme of disillusionment manifests itself as a disconnection between characters,in shell-shocked soldiers, changed values and altered family structures; in general, the thesis sheds light on the societal and cultural impact of the First World War.
