    Main description: Anders als das Judentum, das als Religion eines bestimmten Volkes gilt, wird das Christentum im Allgemeinen als eine universale Religion angesehen, offen für Menschen aus allen Völkern. Als Überwinder des jüdischen Partikularismus und Wegbereiter des christlichen Universalismus gilt vor allem der Apostel Paulus. G. Holtz zeigt, dass eine solche Gegenüberstellung weder Paulus noch dem Judentum seiner Zeit gerecht wird. Ein eindringlicher Vergleich der paulinischen Briefe mit zeitgenössischen jüdischen Schriften, insbesondere der Qumranliteratur und Philo von Alexandrien, zeigt, dass es auf beiden Seiten Tendenzen zur Öffnung und zur Abgrenzung gibt

    Main description: Christianity is generally seen as differing from Judaism in that, rather than being the religion of a specific people, it is open to all peoples. It is St Paul the Apostle who above all is regarded as overcoming Jewish particularism and preparing the way for Christian universalism. G. Holtz shows that a contrast of this kind does justice neither to Paul nor to the Judaism of his age. A detailed comparison of the Letters of St Paul with contemporary Jewish writings, especially the literature of Qumran and the work of Philo of Alexandria shows that on both sides there were tendencies towards openness and towards delineation

Als Überwinder des jüdischen Partikularismus und Wegbereiter des christlichen Universalismus gilt vor allem der Apostel Paulus. G. Holtz zeigt, dass eine solche Gegenüberstellung weder Paulus noch dem Judentum seiner Zeit gerecht wird. Ein eindringlicher Vergleich der paulinischen Briefe mit zeitgenössischen jüdischen Schriften, insbesondere der Qumranliteratur und Philo von Alexandrien, zeigt, dass es auf beiden Seiten Tendenzen zur Öffnung und zur Abgrenzung gibt. Christianity is generally seen as differing from Judaism in that, rather than being the religion of a specific people, it is open to all peoples. It is St Paul the Apostle who above all is regarded as overcoming Jewish particularism and preparing the way for Christian universalism. G. Holtz shows that a contrast of this kind does justice neither to Paul nor to the Judaism of his age. A detailed comparison of the Letters of St Paul with contemporary Jewish writings, especially the literature of Qumran and the work of Philo of Alexandria shows that on both sides there were tendencies towards openness and towards delineation.     Main description: Anders als das Judentum, das als Religion eines bestimmten Volkes gilt, wird das Christentum im Allgemeinen als eine universale Religion angesehen, offen für Menschen aus allen Völkern. Als Überwinder des jüdischen Partikularismus und Wegbereiter des christlichen Universalismus gilt vor allem der Apostel Paulus. G. Holtz zeigt, dass eine solche Gegenüberstellung weder Paulus noch dem Judentum seiner Zeit gerecht wird. Ein eindringlicher Vergleich der paulinischen Briefe mit zeitgenössischen jüdischen Schriften, insbesondere der Qumranliteratur und Philo von Alexandrien, zeigt, dass es auf beiden Seiten Tendenzen zur Öffnung und zur Abgrenzung gibt

    Main description: Christianity is generally seen as differing from Judaism in that, rather than being the religion of a specific people, it is open to all peoples. It is St Paul the Apostle who above all is regarded as overcoming Jewish particularism and preparing the way for Christian universalism. G. Holtz shows that a contrast of this kind does justice neither to Paul nor to the Judaism of his age. A detailed comparison of the Letters of St Paul with contemporary Jewish writings, especially the literature of Qumran and the work of Philo of Alexandria shows that on both sides there were tendencies towards openness and towards delineation
