    Neben verschiedenen Repräsentationen des Anderen Europas hat die koloniale Reiseliteratur auch das Fremdbild des enteuropäisierten Europäers hervorgebracht. Dieser Typus gibt Aufschluss über ein bisher noch kaum erfasstes Phänomen, das als kulturelle Einflussangst beschrieben werden kann. Insbesondere im 19. Jahrhundert lässt sich eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit den möglichen Folgen von Akkulturation, 'Rassenmischung' und Klimaeinflüssen für weiße Reisende und Kolonisten in den Tropen beobachten. Literarische Texte inszenieren den kolonialen Raum als ein Feld interkultureller Begegnungen, das von einer klaren Grenze durchzogen ist - die zu überschreiten tabu bleibt.

Le Clézio (*1940) - »Le chercheur d'or«, »Voyage à Rodrigues« und »La quarantaine« (1985-1995) - wird ein Projekt untersucht, das mit poetologischer Selbstinszenierung zu tun hat: Initiatische Struktur und Ecriture sind analoge Prozesse, in denen ein schreibendes Ich an und über die Grenzen von Bewußtsein und Sprache geführt wird. Auf der methodischen Grundlage der Dichtungstheorien von C.G. Jung und Gaston Bachelard wird - in Anlehnung an Traumdiskurse aus Romantik und Surrealismus - in einer Figuren- und Bildbereichanalyse gezeigt, daß Doppelgänger und elementare Räume poetische Projektionen des Ursprungs sind. The study discusses J.M.G. Le Clézio's (*1940) travel writings from the period 1985-1995 (»Le chercheur d'or«, »Voyage à Rodrigues«, »La quarantaine«) as a project geared to poetological self-enactment. Initiatory structure and écriture are analogous processes that bring the writing self to the limits of awareness and language. Taking its methodological bearings from the literary theories of C.G. Jung and Gaston Bachelard, and drawing upon dream discourses from Romanticism and Surrealism, the analysis of figures and imagery reveals that doppelgänger and elemental natural spaces are poetic projections of the origin of the text.

    A critical exploration of travel, animals and shape-changing in fin de siècle literature. Bats, beetles, wolves, butterflies, bulls, panthers, apes, leopards and spiders are among the countless creatures that crowd the pages of literature of the late nineteenth century. Whether in Gothic novels, science fiction, fantasy, fairy tales, journalism, political discourse, realism or naturalism, the line between the human and the animal becomes blurred. Beastly Journeys examines these bestial transformations across a range of well-known and less familiar texts and shows how they are provoked not only by the mutations of Darwinism but by social and economic shifts that have been lost in retellings and readings of them. The physical alterations described by George Gissing, George MacDonald, Arthur Machen, Arthur Morrison, W.T. Stead, Bram Stoker, H.G. Wells, Oscar Wilde, and many of their contemporaries, are responses to changes in the social body as Britain underwent a series of social and economic crises.     Neben verschiedenen Repräsentationen des Anderen Europas hat die koloniale Reiseliteratur auch das Fremdbild des enteuropäisierten Europäers hervorgebracht. Dieser Typus gibt Aufschluss über ein bisher noch kaum erfasstes Phänomen, das als kulturelle Einflussangst beschrieben werden kann. Insbesondere im 19. Jahrhundert lässt sich eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit den möglichen Folgen von Akkulturation, 'Rassenmischung' und Klimaeinflüssen für weiße Reisende und Kolonisten in den Tropen beobachten. Literarische Texte inszenieren den kolonialen Raum als ein Feld interkultureller Begegnungen, das von einer klaren Grenze durchzogen ist - die zu überschreiten tabu bleibt.
