This third volume in the Media for All series offers a diverse selection of articles which bear testimony to the vigour and versatility of research and developments in audiovisual translation and media accessibility. The collection reflects the critical impact of new technologies on AVT, media accessibility and consumer behaviour and shows the significant increase in collaborative and interdisciplinary research targeting changing consumer perceptions as well as quality issues. Complementing newcomers such as crowdsourcing and potentially universal emoticons, classical themes of AVT studies such as linguistic analyses and corpus-based research are featured. Prevalent throughout the volume is the impact of technology on both methodologies and content. The book will be of interest to researchers from a wide range of disciplines as well as audiovisual translators, lecturers, trainers and students, producers and developers working in the field of language and media accessibility.

Introduction, Susan Petrilli -- Part I: On the Transaltability of Emotions -- Alterity and the Translatability of Emotions as the Foundation of Self, Language and Living Together; Susan Petrilli and Augusto Ponzio -- Why Emotions Translate, but Feelings Do Not: Insights from Peirce; Winfried Nöth -- Feeling and Its Unfolding; Lucia Santaella -- Body, Emotion and Semiosis: Translating Emotion into Action; Jacques Fontanille -- Part II: Speaking Emotions Listening to the Body and to Others -- Emotions as Discourse; Alphonso Lingis -- On a Biology of Emotions and Its role in Cultural Evolution; Elize Bisanz -- Emotion, Culture, and the Nature of Truth: For a Dialogical Philosophy; Wayne Cristaudo -- Part III: Becoming Conscious of Emotions and Social Conditioning -- Self-Regard and Disregarded Selves: A Peircean Approach to Several Social Emotions; Vincent Colapietro -- Language, Pragmatics, and Emotions: The Case of Impoliteness; Frank Nuessel -- Saving-Face: The Nonverbal Communicology of Basic Emotions; Richard Lanigan -- Part IV: Expressing Emotions between Mass-medial and Rhetorical Figures -- Emotional Wellbeing and the Semiotic Translation of Emojis; Marcel Danesi -- Transmediality and Translation of Emotions; Peeter Torop -- The Translator’s Mobilization of Social Emotions: A Behavioral-Economic Approach to the Rhetoric of Translation; Douglas Robinson. This book offers an in-depth, cross-disciplinary discussion of the translatability of social emotions. Part I is a collection of essays by leading philosophers of semiotics in Europe and Latin America, exploring the translatability of social emotions as a culturally embedded social behavior that requires a fully contextualized historical interpretation of their origins in different social and cultural settings. These essays make useful preparations for the case studies introduced in Part II, authored by leading sociological and literary scholars, who explore the cultural influence of the development of social emotions. Finally, Part III delves into specific types of emotions which underscore social interactions at individual and personal levels, such as dignity, (im-)politeness, self-regard and self-esteem. The book will be of interest to scholars of translation studies and semiotics, as well as those interested in the study of emotions more broadly. Susan Petrilli is Professor of Semiotics at the University of Bari, Italy. Meng Ji is Associate Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Sydney, Australia.

Translation, before 9/11, was deemed primarily an instrument of international relations, business, education, and culture. Today it seems, more than ever, a matter of war and peace. In The Translation Zone, Emily Apter argues that the field of translation studies, habitually confined to a framework of linguistic fidelity to an original, is ripe for expansion as the basis for a new comparative literature. Organized around a series of propositions that range from the idea that nothing is translatable to the idea that everything is translatable, The Translation Zone examines the vital role of t

The author examines wordplay (punning etc.), its linguistic features and the variety of its manifestations largely in terms of the degree to which it can be rendered in translation. The corpus of examples is taken from 8 original works by Stanislaw Lem and their translations into German. It transpires from the analyses that some 40% of the instances of wordplay are translatable from Polish into German. This coefficient differs only slightly from results obtained previously by analyzing the translation of wordplay from English into German and French into German. The annex to the volume is a commentary by Stanislaw Lem on the subject of translating wordplay.

Chapter 4: How Traditional Chinese Fiction Entered World Literature Anthologies -- 6. Chapter 5: Researching Traditional Chinese Fiction in the English-speaking World: Translations and Critiques of Jin Ping Mei. 7. Conclusion. . This book develops interdisciplinary and comparative approaches to analyzing the cross-cultural travels of traditional Chinese fiction. It ties this genre to issues such as translation, world literature, digital humanities, book culture, and images of China. Each chapter offers a case study of the historical and cultural conditions under which traditional Chinese fiction has traveled to the English-speaking world, proposing a critical lens that can be used to explain these cross-cultural encounters. The book seeks to identify connections between traditional Chinese fiction and other cultures that create new meanings and add to the significance of reading, teaching, and studying these classical novels and stories in the English-speaking world. Scholars, students, and general readers who are interested in traditional Chinese fiction, translation studies, and comparative and world literature will find this book useful. Junjie Luo is Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Gettysburg College, USA. His essays on translation and transnational studies of traditional Chinese literature have appeared in Comparative Literature Studies, Perspectives: Studies in Translation Theory and Practice, ISLE, and Translation Quarterly, as well as in the edited volumes Historic Engagements with Occidental Cultures, Religions, Power (2014) and Philosophy as World Literature (2020).

Chinese Poetry and Translation: Rights and Wrongs' offers fifteen essays on the triptych of poetry + translation + Chinese. The collection has three parts: "The Translator's Take," "Theoretics," and "Impact." The conversation stretches from queer-feminist engagement with China's newest poetry to philosophical and philological reflections on its oldest, and from Tang- and Song-dynasty classical poetry in Western languages to Baudelaire and Celan in Chinese. Translation is taken as an interlingual and intercultural act, and the essays foreground theoretical expositions and the practice of translation in equal but not opposite measure. Poetry has a transforming yet ever-acute relevance in Chinese culture, and this makes it a good entry point for studying Chinese-foreign encounters. Pushing past oppositions that still too often restrict discussions of translation-form versus content, elegance versus accuracy, and "the original" versus "the translated"--This volume brings a wealth of new thinking to the interrelationships between poetry, translation, and China

World literature was long defined in North America as an established canon of European masterpieces, but an emerging global perspective has challenged both this European focus and the very category of "the masterpiece." The first book to look broadly at the contemporary scope and purposes of world literature, What Is World Literature? probes the uses and abuses of world literature in a rapidly changing world. In case studies ranging from the Sumerians to the Aztecs and from medieval mysticism to postmodern metafiction, David Damrosch looks at the ways works change as they move from national to global contexts. Presenting world literature not as a canon of texts but as a mode of circulation and of reading, Damrosch argues that world literature is work that gains in translation. When it is effectively presented, a work of world literature moves into an elliptical space created between the source and receiving cultures, shaped by both but circumscribed by neither alone. Established classics and new discoveries alike participate in this mode of circulation, but they can be seriously mishandled in the process. From the rediscovered Epic of Gilgamesh in the nineteenth century to Rigoberta Menchú's writing today, foreign works have often been distorted by the immediate needs of their own editors and translators. Eloquently written, argued largely by example, and replete with insightful close readings, this book is both an essay in definition and a series of cautionary tales.

Gabrielle Roy was one of the most prominent Canadian authors of the twentieth century. Joyce Marshall, an excellent writer herself, was one of Roy's English translators. The two shared a deep and long-lasting friendship based on a shared interest in language and writing. In Translation offers a critical examination of the more than two hundred letters exchanged by Roy and Marshall between 1959 and 1980.In their letters, Roy and Marshall exchange news about their general health and well-being, their friends and family, their surroundings, their travels, and other writers, as well as their dealings with critics, editors, and publishers. They recount comical incidents and strange encounters in their lives, and reflect on human nature, current events, and, from time to time, their writing. Of particular interest to the two women were the problems they encountered during the translation process. Many passages in the letters concern the ways in which the nuances of language can be shaped through translation.Editor Jane Everett has arranged the letters here in chronological order and has added critical notes to fill in the historical and literary gaps, as well as to identify various editorial problems. Shedding light on the process of writing and translating, In Translation is an invaluable addition to the study of Canadian writing and to the literature on these two important figures.

Translating Milan Kundera uses new archival research to view the wider cultural scope of the translation issue involving the controversies surrounding Kundera’s translated novels. It focuses on the language of the novels, Kundera’s ‘lost’ works, writing as translation, interpretation, exile, censorship and the social responses to translated fiction in the Anglophone world.

Chapter I: Interviewing Hemingway -- Chapter II: Translator as Interviewer -- Chapter III: Hemingway in Translation. The book offers an innovative approach to the study of Ernest Hemingway’s fiction and biography. It juxtaposes two perspectives that have been underrepresented in Hemingway studies so far: translation and interview. The book is divided into three sections which mirror the key words in the title: interview and translation. Section One explores the “last” interviews with Hemingway in their historical context of the Cold War. Section Two focuses on the achievement of Bronisław Zieliński, Hemingway’s Polish translator and friend, who is hardly known outside Poland. The section gives a detailed account of their correspondence in the years 1958-1961. Section Three is an account of experiments in translating Hemingway’s famous story “Cat in the Rain” (1925) by groups of Polish university students. Its aim is to illustrate the extent to which literary translation may influence the construction of the text’s meaning. .

Der ägyptische Gelehrte, Übersetzer und Autor Rifā‘a Rāfi‘ aṭ -Ṭ ahṭ āwī (1801–1873) ist eine Schlüsselfigur des Übersetzungsprojektes, das Muhammad Ali in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts in Ägypten initiierte.
