    L'article propose une relecture des livres de costumes de la Renaissance dans la perspective du cultural mapping et de la construction de l'espace dans la culture occidentale. Il pose la question du rôle des vêtements dans la construction des espaces et dans la représentation de l'autre. Le vêtement, en particulier dans sa représentation picturale, fait-il appel à un discours visuel autonome? Dans quelle mesure les différents livres des costumes font-ils référence l'un à l'autre? Peut-on y découvrir des relations sous-jacentes? On peut distinguer trois directions sommaires. Dans la première, celle des récits de voyage de Weiditz, le vêtement est utilisé comme une catégorie ethnographique relativement ouverte, même si déjà s'y annonce la tendance à établir une hiérarchisation claire entre nudité sauvage et habillement européen (civilisé). Dans les ouvrages de Desprez, Bertelli ou Grassi par exemple, la variété vestimentaire illustre essentiellement un discours de la différence culturelle. En revanche, dans l̷ouvrage du dernier auteur du siècle, Vecellio, le récit prend la forme d̷un véritable livre, où textes et images se trouvent valorisés à part égale et où apparaissent déjà les traits d̷un véritable journal des modes. Dans leurs efforts pour spatialiser les différentes cultures à travers le vêtement et en illustrant de traits culturels vestimentaires divers les récits, tous contribuent à esquisser les contours et l'idée occidentale d̷un sujet autonome: tout d̷abord par une différenciation culturelle liée à la culture matérielle, ensuite par une différenciation de l̷espace européen et de ses sous-espaces, et enfin par les liens du sujet à la culture matérielle, et plus particulièrement aux ressources économiques. The article tries to restudy the Renaissance Costume books in the modern perspective of mapping as a cultural concept. In which way does dress become crucial to imagine and represent ideas of space and othering? Can pictural and textual dress representation claim the quality of an independent visual discourse? Which are the underlying relations between the different kinds of costume books? The results can be summarized as follows. Three main directions enverge : Weiditz travel books make use of dress as a (relatively) open ethnographic category, but already begins to establish cultural boundaries between the naked wild man and the civilized fully dressed European. The following books (Desprez, Bertelli for ex.) use dress categories to establish their discourse of cultural difference, whereas Vecellio as one of the latest, turns the idea of difference into a mere category of fashion and consequently of economical resources. In his book, text and image are treated on the same level. However, in mapping places and localities and in contrasting and comparing dress cultures, all books make a contribution to compose the western idea of the autonomous subject.
