Den Gruß aus der Ferne mit Mitteilungen über das Erlebte zu verbinden, gehört seither zu den Alltagsritualen des Urlaubs. Aber was genau schreiben Menschen auf Ansichtskarten? Welche sprachlich-kommunikativen Muster des Urlaubsgrußes haben sich bewährt und wie haben sie sich im Laufe der Jahrzehnte verändert? Und droht die Ansichtskarte angesichts der Konkurrenz elektronischer Nachfolger auszusterben?     Untersucht wird die Entwicklung des Tourismus fuer den Rheinabschnitt Mainz-Bonn zwischen 1756 bis ca. 1914 durch die Analyse von Reiseliteratur. Vor allem das heutige UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe Oberes Mittelrheintal faszinierte schon frueh als Reiseziel. Der Verlag Karl Baedeker und das Reiseunternehmen Thomas Cook & Son foerderten als Multiplikatoren die Entwicklung des Tourismus in der Region. Die Fuelle der Reiseliteratur zum Mittelrhein sowie seine Aufnahme als eines der ersten Reiseziele auf dem europaeischen Kontinent in das Angebot von Thomas Cook & Son zeugen von der zeitgenoessischen Relevanz des Rheintourismus. Dampfschiff und Eisenbahn ermoeglichten Massentourismus und Gesellschaftsreisen am Mittelrhein und trugen zu dessen Entwicklung zu einer bedeutenden europaeischen Tourismusregion des 19. Jahrhunderts bei.

    While gender research in tourism has become increasingly important within Western academic circles, little has been written from an Asian perspective. This book is the first to address this knowledge gap and to fully explore Asian gendered identities and tourism. The chapters reflect upon the role of tourism in producing, reiterating and resisting existing gendered structures of power in Asia. The authors attempt to reconcile both Asian and Western perspectives on gender using their own personal experiences of understanding and negotiating Western and Asian identities and practices. The book paves the way for important reflections about the ontological and epistemological meanings of ‘Asia’, ‘gender’ and ‘tourism’. It is an important resource for researchers from a range of disciplines including tourism, leisure studies, Asian studies and feminist and gender studies, as well as for professionals working in the tourism industry
