    Touko Laaksonen (1920?1991), aka Tom of Finland, is Finland?s most internationally acclaimed artist. He created a gallery of male types that retain fresh relevance from generation to generation as part of a timeless cultural iconography. Not only are his homoerotic fantasy drawings celebrated as enduring icons of gay subcultures and communities, but today they are also recognized by a growing audience of art lovers. His highly aestheticized, technically immaculate drawings have exerted a worldwide influence in fashion, design and culture trends.00?One man?s porn has become everyone?s art,? comments Kiasma Museum Director Leevi Haapala in his essay, which follows the career of the Kaarina-born, Helsinki-based advertising executive and musician who went on to achieve worldwide artistic fame. Haapala?s essay is accompanied by a biography compiled by researcher Kati Mustola and an essay by curator João Laia, who uses the trope of cruising to discuss the sense of community, joy and pride engendered by Tom?s characters. Researcher Harri Kalha sheds light on how Tom?s originally hyper-Finnish masculine types embarked on their world conquest, leading them all the way to Los Angeles, where Tom?s namesake foundation is based today.     Seit einigen Jahren setzt die Filmwirtschaft wieder verstärkt darauf, das breite Publikum mit der Adaption von literarischen Texten in die Kinosäle zu locken. Das Interesse erstreckt sich sowohl auf Klassiker als auch auf Werke der Gegenwartsliteratur: Thomas Manns 'Buddenbrooks', Heinrich Manns 'Henri IV', Theodor Fontanes 'Effi Briest', Martin Walsers 'Ein fliehendes Pferd', Patrick Süskinds 'Das Parfum' und Bernhard Schlinks 'Der Vorleser' wurden innerhalb weniger Jahre auf die Leinwand gebracht. Die Liste lässt sich mit populären Titeln vor allem der jüngeren Literatur fortsetzen, etwa Thomas Brussigs 'Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee', Judith Hermanns Erzählband 'Nichts als Gespenster' (vielleicht die gelungenste der hier genannten 'Literaturverfilmungen', Benjamin Leberts 'Crazy', Sven Regeners 'Herr Lehmann', Frank Goosens 'Liegen lernen' und Martin Suters Romane 'Small World' und 'Lila Lila'. Dieses neu erstarkte Interesse an der Literatur mag auch eine Reaktion auf den florierenden Diskurs über den angeblichen oder tatsächlichen deutschen Bildungsnotstand sein: Wenn die Schule als Bildungsinstitution versagt, muss die Unterhaltungsindustrie versuchen, die klaffenden Löcher zu stopfen, das Heer der Leseunwilligen via Bild mit einem gewissen Maß an Kanonischem zu versorgen. Ich konzentriere mich hier auf zwei 'Literaturverfilmungen', deren Macher offenbar auf eine in zahlreichen Ratgebern und Fachpublikationen zur filmischen Dramaturgie propagierte - aber auch kritisch diskutierte - 'Rezeptur' gesetzt haben, um die Chancen auf einen kommerziellen Erfolg zu erhöhen.

    Eine neue Veröffentlichung der seit über 30 Jahren existierenden Kinderkrimireihe Die 'Drei ???' verdrängt noch länger wirkende und mit jeder Veröffentlichung auf geradezu enervierende Weise den Status quo bestätigende Bands wie etwa AC/DC von den ersten Plätzen der Bestsellerlisten; dem Marvel-Universum zugehörige Serien wie Daredevil und Jennifer Jones oder das aus Versatzstücken der Horror-Kultur komponierte Penny Dreadful werden von der Streaming-Plattform Netflix höchst erfolgreich und in direkter Konkurrenz zum allerneuesten Sherlock-Holmes-Pastiche produziert: Neue Helden sind rar geworden, weshalb man lieber sattsam bekannte durch neue Abenteuer laviert, wobei auch hier Variationen zwar grundsätzlich erlaubt sind, aber nur in bestimmten, eng definierten und zudem von Fans rigoros kontrollierten Grenzen, die den ursprünglichen Gehalt der Vorlage stetig zementieren sollen. Zweifellos durchwirkt gegenwärtig ein Phänomen die Kultur, sinnig Retromania genannt, infolgedessen es die jetzige Generation wie wohl keine zuvor vermag, so vehement die Helden der eigenen Jugend zu konservieren; andererseits gelingt es keiner Generation wie dieser so wenig, sich von den Helden ihrer Kindheit, ja von ihrer Kindheit ganz allgemein zu trennen. Da passt es dann, wenn zeitgleich die Literatur in Werken von Karl Ove Knausgård oder Andreas Maier eben diese Kindheit als naiven Zustand ursprünglicher Naivität zelebriert.

    The relation between reality and language, the instability of language as a signification system, the representation crisis, and the borders of interpretation are the controversial issues that have engaged not only philosophers, but also many authors, translators, and literary critics. Some philosophers like Derrida accuse Western thinking of being obsessed with binary oppositions. In Derrida's view, Western tradition resorts to external references as God, truth, origin, center and reason to stabilize the signification system. Since these concepts lack an internal sense and there is no transcendental signified that can fix these signifiers, language turns to an instable system by means of which no fixed meaning can be created. Many authors like Beckett, Stoppard, and Caryl Churchill also noticed this impossibility of language. While Derrida's deconstructive approach to this crisis has an epistemological nature, these playwrights present an aesthetic solution by turning the deconstructive potential of language against itself in text and performance. This dissertation aims at exploring their performing methods and dramatic texts to demonstrate how their delogocentric strategies work. By analyzing their plays, I will examine if their use of signifiers that have no references in reality, intentional misconceptions, disintegrated subjectivities, decentered narratives, and experimental performances can help them undermine the prevailing logocentrism of Western thought. The examination of the change in aesthetic strategies from Beckett, who belongs to earlier stages of post modernism, to Caryl Churchill, who should perform in a globalized world with increasing dominance of speed and information, is another aim of this research. In my view,Beckett's obsession with unspeakable, absurdity, and disintegration of subjectivity develops to Stoppard's language games, metadrama, and anti-representation and culminates in Churchill's anti-narrative texts and pluralistic performances.     Wenn ich mir meine Erfahrungen mit aktuellen deutschen Filmproduktionen […] vergegenwärtige, so sehe ich drei unterschiedliche Ansätze. Erstens die Filme von Thomas Arslan (Der schöne Tag, D 2001) und Angela Schanelec (Mein langsames Leben, D 2001). Beide erzählen von Personen und Orten unserer Gegenwart. […] Das Geworden-sein von Personen und Konstellationen läßt sich anhand dieser Zeitschnitte begreifen, während andere Zeitschichten im Film ausgeblendet bleiben. Zweitens denke ich an die Filme von Andres Veiel (Black Box BRD, D 2001) und Christian Petzold (Die Innere Sicherheit, D 2000). In diesen Filmen wird auf unterschiedliche Weise die Gegenwart mit der Vergangenheit konfrontiert. Diese Zeitbilder beschreiben gleichsam innere Räume, deren Konstellationen für den Zuschauer weniger sichtbar und erklärbar werden, als dass man sie erfühlen und ertasten kann. Schließlich nenne ich die Filme von Tom Tykwer mit der Hauptdarstellerin Franka Potente (Lola rennt, D 1998 und Der Krieger und die Kaiserin, D 2000). Diese Filme haben auf den ersten Blick gar nichts mit der Erfahrung von Geschichte oder Zeitgeschehen zu tun. Um mit Kracauer zu sprechen, könnte man sie als »ausgezeichnet gemachte Sachen« bezeichnen, die gleichzeitig nichts als »Staffage« und »leeres Schaugepränge« sind. Es handelt sich im Vergleich zu den obengenannten Zeitschnitten und Zeitbildern um leere Bilder, um reine Oberflächen, in denen die Projektionen zweier deutscher (Film-) Mythen auf spezifische Weise gebrochen werden. Tykwers (und Potentes) Arbeit am Mythos funktioniert anders als jene, die Kracauer bei Josef von Sternberg (Der Blaue Engel, D 1930) kritisierte. Der Romanvorlage Heinrich Manns wurde in „Der Blaue Engel“ die Kritik der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft entzogen und damit ihr historischer Bezug, was ihn in eine mythische Filmerzählung verwandelte. Tykwers Filme erscheinen dagegen als synthetische Produkte, die sich punktuell auf Mythen deutscher Filmgeschichte konzentrieren. Nur in diesem Sinne ist in ihnen historische Erfahrung ...
