This book explores the sexual slander of Jews in Christian texts from the first through fifth centuries. These early Christian representations of Jewish sexuality reveal how Church fathers used accusations of fleshliness, bestiality, and licentiousness as strategies to differentiate the "spiritual" Christian from the "carnal" Jew

    Scope: 1 Online-Ressource (xi,246p.)
    Notes:

Working from the thesis that the essence of Christianity cannot be understood without its historical and cultural manifestations, the author proceeds to examine the interrelationships between Protestant theology and aesthetics in their threefold significance as theories of the sensory perception, of beauty and art. Using Herder, Wackenroder and De Wette as exemplars, he sketches a modernisation programme for the theory of culture and of religion that places culture within an embracing world of meaning and the Christian religion within a concrete horizon of experience

The study examines the religious biographies of major figures in fin-de-siècle Vienna, illuminating their religious and ideological beliefs

Liturgy and literature have had a complex historical relationship. This applies equally to theculture of the Middle Ages, so heavily influenced by Christianity,as well as to the modern era. This book studies exemplary cases from a range of disciplines (linguistics, literary studies, history, philosophy, and theology) to illuminate overlap and disjunction between the two domains. It thus explores a long-neglected field of study

Christianity and the Transformation of the Book combines broad-gauged synthesis and close textual analysis to reconstruct the kinds of books and the ways of organizing scholarly inquiry and collaboration among the Christians of Caesarea, on the coast of Roman Palestine. The book explores the dialectical relationship between intellectual history and the history of the book, even as it expands our understanding of early Christian scholarship

An international team of literary and social historians investigate here diverse forms of formal and informal censorship practices. In this context censorship designates a complex and tension-filled relationship between the spirit of innovation and the conservative forces of the status quo. Culture connotes not just the production of texts for the book trade and the theatre, but any kind of sanctioned attempt to control public opinion. The chronological framework is designed to highlight the culturally and politically eventful years between Weimar Classicism and Weimar Republic (1787-1933) which saw the evolution of a pan-German cultural identity. Two concluding essays on the American reception of the Nazi book burning of May 10, 1933, and censorship practices of the Cultural Ministry of the former GDR round out the historical picture, demonstrating the continuity of control mechanisms

The "Legenda aurea", compiled in Latin by Jacobus de Voragine between 1260 and 1270, is the most widely disseminated collection of saints' legends in the Middle Ages. Among the countless vernacular reworkings there are three in Old Occitan which are closely bound up with the Catalan line of "Legenda aurea" adaptations. The Old Occitan Version B edited here for the first time represents a selection of 102 chapters from the original corpus with four additional chapters and is based on various Occitan and Catalan translations from the Latin. The linguistic commentary concentrates on the vocabulary of the texts edited and also presents it in a complete glossary. Newly attested forms and meanings are provided with commentaries of their own and represent a significant addition to the material available to Old Occitan lexicography

Description based on online resource; title from PDF title page (publisher’s Web site, viewed September 10 2015)

In the Christian tradition, especially in the works of Paul, Augustine, and the exegetes of the Middle Ages, the body is a twofold entity consisting of inner and outer persons that promises to find its true materiality in a time to come. A potentially transformative vehicle, it is a dynamic mirror that can reflect the work of the divine within and substantially alter its own materiality if receptive to divine grace. The writings of Hadewijch of Brabant, a thirteenth-century beguine, engage with this tradition in sophisticated ways both singular to her mysticism and indicative of the theological milieu of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Crossing linguistic and historical boundaries, Patricia Dailey connects the embodied poetics of Hadewijch's visions, writings, and letters to the work of Julian of Norwich, Hildegard of Bingen, Marguerite of Oingt, and other mystics and visionaries. She establishes new criteria to more consistently understand and assess the singularity of women's mystical texts and, by underscoring the similarities between men's and women's writings of the time, collapses traditional conceptions of gender as they relate to differences in style, language, interpretative practices, forms of literacy, and uses of textuality
