    The complicated junctions negotiated by the novel during the eighteenth century reveal not only achievements but also exclusions. Misfit Forms offers a speculative reconstruction of roads less traveled. What if typographical emphasis and its associated transmission of sensuality and feeling had not lost out to "transparent" typography and its paradigms of sympathetic identification? What was truncated when cumulative narrative structures were declared primitive in relation to the unified teleological plot? What visions of the novel’s value as an arena for experience were sidelined when novel reading was linked to epistemological gain?Reading novels by Sterne, Charlotte Bronte, Defoe, Gaskell, Hardy, and Woolf in tandem with less-known works, Nandrea illuminates the modes and techniques that did not become mainstream. Following Deleuze, Nandrea traces the "dynamic repetitions" of these junctures in the work of later writers. Far from showing the eclipse of primitive modes, such moments of convergence allow us to imagine other possibilities for the novel’s trajectory

    In early modern Europe, international law emerged as a means of governing relations between rapidly consolidating sovereign states, purporting to establish a normative order for the perilous international world. However, it was intrinsically fragile and uncertain, for sovereign states had no acknowledged common authority that would create, change, apply, and enforce legal norms. In Imagining World Order, Chenxi Tang shows that international world order was as much a literary as a legal matter. To begin with, the poetic imagination contributed to the making of international law. As the discourse of international law coalesced, literary works from romances and tragedies to novels responded to its unfulfilled ambitions and inexorable failures, occasionally affirming it, often contesting it, always uncovering its problems and rehearsing imaginary solutions.Tang highlights the various modes in which literary texts - some highly canonical (Camões, Shakespeare, Corneille, Lohenstein, and Defoe, among many others), some largely forgotten yet worth rediscovering - engaged with legal thinking in the period from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century. In tracing such engagements, he offers a dual history of international law and European literature. As legal history, the book approaches the development of international law in this period —its so-called classical age—in terms of literary imagination. As literary history, Tang recounts how literature confronted the question of international world order and how, in the process, a set of literary forms common to major European languages (epic, tragedy, romance, novel) evolved

Nicht nur das: Früher eher Anhängsel der Serien und Kinofilme, haben die Romane heute in vielerlei Hinsicht sogar die Führung im Kosmos von Kirk, Picard und Co. übernommen. Lyrik hat keine Chance, aber auch Novellen und Erzählungen oder gar Erzählungssammlungen sind nicht sonderlich beliebt. Das ist schon länger so in der deutschen Literaturgeschichte. Nachdem der Roman erst einmal sein Image als Unterhaltungsschund im 18. Jahrhundert abgelegt hatte, trat er gleich die steile Karriere als ehrwürdigste, welthaltigste, bildendste aller Gattungen an. Deshalb gehört Orientierung über seine Geschichte zum Kerncurriculum jedes Studiums der Germanistik oder Literaturwissenschaft. Sie wird hier von fachlichen Autoritäten kurzgefasst, aber umfassend, geboten.

    In dieser Untersuchung werden erstmals in einem entwicklungsgeschichtlichen Rahmen deutsche Spielfilme im Hinblick auf die Frage nach Schuld im Nationalsozialismus analysiert. Welche Entschuldungsmuster und Schuldzuweisungen werden in den Filmen zwischen 1946 und 1989 präsentiert und wie entwickelte sich dies über die Jahrzehnte? Inwiefern sind die Filme Teil des zeitgenössischen Schulddiskurses? Verlief die Entwicklung der Schulddarstellungen in beiden deutschen Staaten in eine unterschiedliche Richtung oder gab es sogar markante Parallelen – ein gesamtdeutsches Entschuldungsmuster? Bei der Analyse wird deutlich, dass sich die Filme aus Bundesrepublik und DDR bis etwa 1965 im Hinblick auf die Schuldfrage ähnlicher waren als zumeist in der Forschung angenommen, sich danach aber in verschiedene Richtungen entwickelten. Während in der Bundesrepublik ab der Mitte der 60er Jahre die Filme den Ausprägungen des Schulddiskurses folgten, entfernten sich insbesondere die Produktionen der DDR immer mehr vom öffentlichen Schuldverständnis des Staats und präsentierten zunehmend alternative Schuldinterpretationen. Eines der großen Themen, eine Art Gretchenfrage für deutsche Filmschaffende nach 1945, bildet bis heute die Auseinandersetzung mit den Verbrechen während der Nazi-Diktatur.     In dieser Untersuchung werden erstmals in einem entwicklungsgeschichtlichen Rahmen deutsche Spielfilme im Hinblick auf die Frage nach Schuld im Nationalsozialismus analysiert. Welche Entschuldungsmuster und Schuldzuweisungen werden in den Filmen zwischen 1946 und 1989 präsentiert und wie entwickelte sich dies über die Jahrzehnte? Inwiefern sind die Filme Teil des zeitgenössischen Schulddiskurses? Verlief die Entwicklung der Schulddarstellungen in beiden deutschen Staaten in eine unterschiedliche Richtung oder gab es sogar markante Parallelen – ein gesamtdeutsches Entschuldungsmuster? Bei der Analyse wird deutlich, dass sich die Filme aus Bundesrepublik und DDR bis etwa 1965 im Hinblick auf die Schuldfrage ähnlicher waren als zumeist in der Forschung angenommen, sich danach aber in verschiedene Richtungen entwickelten. Während in der Bundesrepublik ab der Mitte der 60er Jahre die Filme den Ausprägungen des Schulddiskurses folgten, entfernten sich insbesondere die Produktionen der DDR immer mehr vom öffentlichen Schuldverständnis des Staats und präsentierten zunehmend alternative Schuldinterpretationen. Eines der großen Themen, eine Art Gretchenfrage für deutsche Filmschaffende nach 1945, bildet bis heute die Auseinandersetzung mit den Verbrechen während der Nazi-Diktatur.
