    The author examines literature describing women's lives and experiences in the Middle East. She points out that Western male and female academics have contributed to the "intellectual construct which tends to take the norm as being white, middle-class, and located in the West". The author concludes that Islam is only one of many factors shaping women's lives in the Middle East. Moreover she points out the need to differentiate.
