    Walking through Elysium stresses the subtle and intricate ways writers across time and space wove Vergil’s underworld in Aeneid 6 into their works. These allusions operate on many levels, from the literary and political to the religious and spiritual. Aeneid 6 reshaped prior philosophical, religious, and poetic traditions of underworld descents, while offering a universalizing account of the spiritual that could accommodate prior as well as emerging religious and philosophical systems. Vergil’s underworld became an archetype, a model flexible enough to be employed across genres, and periods, and among differing cultural and religious contexts. The essays in this volume speak to Vergil’s incorporation of and influence on literary representations of underworlds, souls, afterlives, prophecies, journeys, and spaces, from sacred and profane to wild and civilized, tracing the impact of Vergil’s underworld on authors such as Ovid, Seneca, Statius, Augustine, and Shelley, from Pagan and Christian traditions through Romantic and Spiritualist readings. Walking through Elysium asserts the deep and lasting influence of Vergil’s underworld from the moment of its publication to the present day

Bis in die 60er Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts war die Stadt am Golf ein Sehnsuchtsort, und auch heute noch blühen die Zitronen in Unteritalien. Dieser Band mit Beiträgen aus der Archäologie, der Geschichts-, Kunst-, Musik-, Film- und Literaturwissenschaft zeigt aber, dass Neapel auch stets ein Hort der Unruhe, des Zwielichtigen, wenn nicht des Anrüchigen war und ist. Die Stadt ist so durchlässig wie der Tuffsteingrund, auf dem Parthenope einst erbaut wurde. Als »Stadt des Porösen« (Walter Benjamin) steht Neapel für eine reiche antike Überlieferung, für eine hoch entwickelte Opernkultur und eine barocke Verblüffungskunst, die ihresgleichen sucht, aber auch für die lange spanische Fremdherrschaft, für blutige Rebellionen und nicht zuletzt für die Auswüchse globalisierter Kriminalität. Until the 1960’s the city situated on the Gulf was a place of desire and even today lemons are still blossoming in Southern Italy. This volume with essays from archaeology, study fields of history, art, music, film and literature depict that Naples also was and still is a hotbed of unrest, of shadiness not to say disreputability. The city is as porous as the volcanic tuff on which Parthenope once was built. As a »porous city« (Walter Benjamin) Naples stands for a rich ancient tradition, for a highly developed opera culture and for an outstanding baroque art but also for a long period of Spanish rule, for bloody rebellions and last but not least for global crime.

    Der Epikureismus gehört zweifellos zu einer der umstrittensten Philosophenschulen in der Antike. Seine Lebensmaximen, die sich um Begriffe wie "Lust", "Seelenruhe" und ein "Leben im Verborgenen" drehen, wurden schon in der antiken Literatur ganz unterschiedlich rezipiert und oftmals sehr kritisch beurteilt. Eine zentrale Gestaltungstechnik, die bei der Rezeption epikureischen Gedankenguts bisher noch nicht systematisch untersucht wurde, stellt die autorenspezifische Inszenierung entsprechender Figuren in der römischen Literatur dar. Neben den philosophischen Dialogen Ciceros bildet die römische Dichtung im 1. Jhd. v. Chr. und im 1. Jhd. n. Chr. mit einer thematisch geordneten Textauswahl von Vergil, Horaz, Silius Italicus und Statius den Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit.     This dissertation argues that Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, Silius Italicus' Punica, and Papinius Statius' Thebaid use human encounters with nature to reflect on the morality of their poems' central characters. Interactions and conflicts with nature occur at programmatic points in the poems, further indicating their importance for the narratives. This common thread throughout all three epics points to a deeper interest in nature and the unknown beyond the edges of the empire. As such, ecocritical theory and theories of space and place have greatly informed my approach to this topic. By examining encounters with nature such as humans crossing geographical boundaries, cutting down forests, and fighting river gods, Flavian epic is shown to comment on the military exploits of the three Flavian emperors, their interactions with nature while on campaign, and the ideology of their regime.

    Während frühere Arbeiten die Silven des Statius entweder unter literaturgeschichtlich-ästhetischen Aspekten betrachteten oder sie als Quelle für historische und sozialwissenschaftliche Studien nahmen, wählt diese Untersuchung einen funktionsgeschichtlichen Zugriff, der dezidiert beide Ansätze vereint und sowohl die Stellung der Silven innerhalb der römischen Literatur als auch ihre Position im Literaturbetrieb am Ende des ersten Jahrhunderts n. Chr. untersucht. Dabei spielt für Meike Rühl vor allem der okkasionelle Charakter der Silven und ihr ausdrücklicher Adressatenbezug eine entscheidende Rolle: Die Silven sind Produkte professionellen Dichtens und werden als solche im Kontext der Interaktion zwischen Dichter und Adressat neu bewertet

    Angaben zur beteiligten Person Bitto: PD Dr. Gregor Bitto ist wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Lehrstuhl für Klassische Philologie der Katholischen Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. Basierend auf neueren Arbeiten zu künstlerischen Alterswerken, die den Diskurscharakter des Alterswerkbegriffes betonen, zeigt diese Studie, wie der antike Dichter Statius sein zweites Epos, die Achilleis, vor dem Hintergrund vorhandener Ideen zur künstlerischen Produktion im Alter, entwirft. Er erschafft dazu in seinen parallel erscheinenden Gelegenheitsgedichten, den Silven, das Bild eines alternden Dichters und konzeptioniert die Achilleis als komplementäres Nachfolgewerk zur Thebais, das in seiner Gestaltung auf einen alternden Dichter schließen lässt. Das wirkliche Alter des Statius oder seine tatsächliche physische Konstitution werden dabei nicht in den Blick genommen. Vielmehr wird gezeigt, wie Statius in expliziter Form sich als Alternder dem Publikum in den Silven präsentiert und so eine Rezeptionshaltung für die Lektüre der Achilleis erzeugt. So können entsprechende Textsignale auf der Mikro- und der Makroebene im Epos vom Publikum als Belege für einen alternden Dichter gelesen werden.

    Angaben zur beteiligten Person Kreuz: Dr. Gottfried Eugen Kreuz ist assoziierter Professor für Latinistik am Fachbereich Altertumswissenschaften der Universität Salzburg. Statius gilt mit Recht einerseits als sehr experimentierfreudiger, andererseits als sehr visuell veranlagter Autor. Nicht von ungefähr finden sich unter seinen Silvae eine Reihe von Gedichten, die, oft in beschreibendem Gestus, visuell Wahrnehmbares wie Örtlichkeiten oder bildliche Darstellungen zum Hauptgegenstand haben und versuchen, das poetische Potential solcher Materien (silvae) auszuloten. Das Buch zeichnet diesen Auslotungsprozess anhand dreier motivisch definierter Gedichtgruppen (Panegyrik, Villengedichte, Spiegelmotivik) nach: Welche Mechanismen lassen in den einzelnen Gedichten den textimmanent entworfenen Raum bzw. ein textimmanent entworfenes Bild zur Heterotopie im Foucaultschen Sinne, und das Gedicht selbst zum textlichen Äquivalent des Geschilderten werden? Der Bogen der Möglichkeiten reicht dabei von der Entwicklung neuartiger Interpretationsstrategien für Bauwerke und Bauensembles wie die römischen Fora, den Kaiserpalast oder eine neugebaute Straße (silv. 1, 1 und 6; 4, 1–3) über Experimente zur Nachzeichnung der Art und Weise, wie raffiniert gebaute Villen wahrgenommen werden (silv. 1, 3 und 2, 2) bis zu poetisch und poetologisch komplexen Spielen mit Spiegelungsphänomenen (silv. 2, 3 und 3, 4).
