    Das 19. Jahrhundert sei „wohnsüchtig" gewesen, diagnostizierte Walter Benjamin einst. Das „Raumgefühl" (August Schmarsow) dieser Epoche prägt das literarische Werk Thomas Manns. Die Studie deutet Manns literarische Raumentwürfe nicht biographisch oder textimmanent, sondern begreift sie als Versuchsanordnungen zur materiellen Kultur, denen diskursanalytisch, wissensgeschichtlich und ideologiekritisch auf den Grund zu gehen ist. Dazu werden die in einschlägigen Werken Manns entworfenen Raumsemantiken in genauen Textlektüren profiliert: Die Arbeit untersucht etwa die Buddenbrooks im Hinblick auf zeitgenössische Diskurse um Interieurs und bürgerlichen Lebensstil; sie geht dem spatialisierten „Feindbegriff" (Reinhart Koselleck) des Barbarischen im Zauberberg nach und analysiert Topographien der Exilerfahrung in Joseph und seine Brüder. Ihr spezifisches Erkenntnisinteresse ermöglicht neue Einsichten auch zu vermeintlich „ausinterpretierten" (Helmut Koopmann) Texten.

    Out of Bounds focuses on the crucial role that conceptions of iconic colonial Indian spaces—jungles, cantonments, cities, hill stations, bazaars, clubs—played in the literary and social production of British India. Author Alan Johnson illuminates the geographical, rhetorical, and ideological underpinnings of such depictions and, from this, argues that these spaces operated as powerful motifs in the acculturation of Anglo-India. He shows that the bicultural, intrinsically ambivalent outlook of Anglo-Indian writers is acutely sensitive to spatial motifs that, insofar as these condition the idea of home and homelessness, alternately support and subvert conventional colonial perspectives.Colonial spatial motifs not only informed European representations of India, but also shaped important aesthetic notions of the period, such as the sublime. This book also explains how and why Europeans’ rhetorical and visual depictions of the Indian subcontinent, whether ostensibly administrative, scientific, or aesthetic, constituted a primary means of memorializing Empire, creating an idiom that postcolonial India continues to use in certain ways. Consequently, Johnson examines specific motifs of Anglo-Indian cultural remembrance, such as the hunting memoir, hill station life, and the Mutiny, all of which facilitated the mythic iconography of the Raj. He bases his work on the premise that spatiality (the physical as well as social conceptualization of space) is a vital component of the mythos of colonial life and that the study of spatiality is too often a subset of a focus on temporality.Johnson reads canonical and lesser-known fiction, memoirs, and travelogues alongside colonial archival documents to identify shared spatial motifs and idioms that were common to the period. Although he discusses colonial works, he focuses primarily on the writings of Anglo-Indians such as Rudyard Kipling, John Masters, Jim Corbett, and Flora Annie Steel to demonstrate how conventions of spatial identity were rhetorically maintained—and continually compromised. All of these considerations amplify this book’s focus on the porosity of boundaries in literatures of the colony and of the nation.Out of Bounds will be of interest to not only postcolonial literary scholars, but also scholars and students in interdisciplinary nineteenth-century studies, South Asian cultural history, cultural anthropology, women’s studies, and sociology.

    A 29th-century dystopian society seen through the eyes of a mutant-cum-romantic poet; a post-impressionist landscape of orbs and cubes experienced by a wandering underdog; an imaginary sick room generated entirely from sounds reaching the ears of an invalid: These and other haunting re-presentations of time and space constitute the Japanese modernist landscape depicted in this volume of stories from the 1910s to the 1930s. The fourteen stories selected for this anthology—by both relatively unknown and “must-read” authors—experiment with a protean modernist style in the vivacious period between the nation-building Meiji and the early years of Showa. The writers capture imaginary temporal and spatial dimensions that embody forms of futuristic urban space, colonial space, utopia, dystopia, and heterotopia. Their work invites readers to abandon the conventional naturalistic approach to spatial and temporal representations and explore how the physical and empirical experience of time and space is distorted and reconfigured through the prism of modernist Japanese prose.An introduction and prefatory materials provide historical and critical context for Japanese modernism, making Three-Dimensional Reading a valuable teaching text not only for the study of modern Japanese literature, but for world literature, global modernism, and utopian studies as well. The volume also includes drawings by contemporary artist Sakaguchi Kyōhei, whose ability to create a stunning visual reality beyond the borders of time and place is a testament to the power and reverberations of the modernist imagination.

Sie bezieht sich daher auf Textsorten wie Reiseführer oder geographische Sachtexte, die visuell wahrnehmbare Szenerien beschreiben. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Reihenfolge, in welcher die Bestandteile des Raums eingeführt werden, woraus eine Klassifikation von ,Blickführungstypen‘ abgeleitet wird. Auf dieser Basis werden entsprechende Effekte und Funktionen verschiedener Strategien der Raumkonstitution analysiert. The study examines the linguistic devices used in English texts to constitute an imagined space before the reader's 0inner eye.0 For this, it has recourse to text types such as travel guides or factual geographical texts wnich describe visually perceptible scenarios. The focus is on the sequence in which the elements of the space are introduced, and from this a classification is derived of different ways in which the reader’s eye is led. On this basis, the relevant effects and functions are analysed of different strategies for constituting space.

Around 1800 there is a new symbolisation and narration of ‘internal spaces’, spiritual and psychic processes, states or relationships which do not lend themselves to direct observation. This volume focuses on the narrated ‘real’ spaces of Romanticism; it deals with the cultural encoding of houses and rooms, castles and towers, but also of open spaces – the vastness of the sea, riverscapes and distant lands. The analyses are to be understood as a contribution within the currently proclaimed spatial or topographical turn to a new dimensioning of a complex of central importance for both narrative and representational techniques and for cultural anthropology. Um 1800 werden die ‚Räume des Inneren‘, werden geistige und psychische Prozesse, Zustände oder Beziehungen, die sich unmittelbarer Anschauung entziehen, neu symbolisiert und erzählt. Der Fokus dieses Bandes liegt auf den erzählten ‚realen‘ Räumen der Romantik, es geht dabei um die kulturelle Kodierung von Häusern und Zimmern, Schlössern und Türmen, aber auch von offenen Räumen: der Weite des Meeres, Flusslandschaften und fernen Ländern. Die Analysen tragen im Rahmen des gegenwärtig proklamierten spatial oder topographical turn zu einer neuen Vermessung eines sowohl erzähl- und darstellungstechnisch als auch kulturanthropologisch zentralen Komplexes bei.

Die Studie deutet Manns literarische Raumentwürfe nicht biographisch oder textimmanent, sondern begreift sie als Versuchsanordnungen zur materiellen Kultur, denen diskursanalytisch, wissensgeschichtlich und ideologiekritisch auf den Grund zu gehen ist. Dazu werden die in einschlägigen Werken Manns entworfenen Raumsemantiken in genauen Textlektüren profiliert: Die Arbeit untersucht etwa die Buddenbrooks im Hinblick auf zeitgenössische Diskurse um Interieurs und bürgerlichen Lebensstil; sie geht dem spatialisierten „Feindbegriff" (Reinhart Koselleck) des Barbarischen im Zauberberg nach und analysiert Topographien der Exilerfahrung in Joseph und seine Brüder. Ihr spezifisches Erkenntnisinteresse ermöglicht neue Einsichten auch zu vermeintlich „ausinterpretierten" (Helmut Koopmann) Texten.

    This open access collection offers a detailed mapping of recent Nordic literature and its different genres (fiction, poetry, and childrens literature) through the perspective of spatiality. Concentrating on contemporary Nordic literature, the book presents a distinctive view on the spatial turn and widens the understanding of Nordic literature outside of canonized authors. Examining literatures by Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish authors, the chapters investigate a recurrent theme of social criticism and analyze this criticism against the welfare state and power hierarchies in spatial terms. The chapters explore various narrative worlds and spacesfrom the urban to parks and forests, from textual spaces to spatial thematics, studying these spatial features in relation to the problems of late modernity.

Around 1800 there is a new symbolisation and narration of ‘internal spaces’, spiritual and psychic processes, states or relationships which do not lend themselves to direct observation. This volume focuses on the narrated ‘real’ spaces of Romanticism; it deals with the cultural encoding of houses and rooms, castles and towers, but also of open spaces – the vastness of the sea, riverscapes and distant lands. The analyses are to be understood as a contribution within the currently proclaimed spatial or topographical turn to a new dimensioning of a complex of central importance for both narrative and representational techniques and for cultural anthropology. Um 1800 werden die ‚Räume des Inneren‘, werden geistige und psychische Prozesse, Zustände oder Beziehungen, die sich unmittelbarer Anschauung entziehen, neu symbolisiert und erzählt. Der Fokus dieses Bandes liegt auf den erzählten ‚realen‘ Räumen der Romantik, es geht dabei um die kulturelle Kodierung von Häusern und Zimmern, Schlössern und Türmen, aber auch von offenen Räumen: der Weite des Meeres, Flusslandschaften und fernen Ländern. Die Analysen tragen im Rahmen des gegenwärtig proklamierten spatial oder topographical turn zu einer neuen Vermessung eines sowohl erzähl- und darstellungstechnisch als auch kulturanthropologisch zentralen Komplexes bei.

    In Another Place: Identity, Space, and Transcultural Signification in Goli Taraqqi's Fiction, Goulia Ghardashkhani examines the narrative process of the struggle for identification in the short stories of one of the well-established figures of Iranian contemporary prose literature. Goli Taraqqi's narratives of displacement and emigration are approached through a theoretical lens that foregrounds the significance of space and the role of retrospective self-narration in acts of cultural representation. Ghardashkhani studies Taraqqi's autobiographical narratives with an emphasis on the unstable meanings of homeland and Farang (a culturally constructed term signifying the West) and, thereby, accounts for Taraqqi's ironical style of narration in her memories of homeland recollected in exile.

    Bringing together recent scholarship on religion and the spatial imagination, Kristen Poole examines how changing religious beliefs and transforming conceptions of space were mutually informative in the decades around 1600. Supernatural Environments in Shakespeare's England explores a series of cultural spaces that focused attention on interactions between the human and the demonic or divine: the deathbed, purgatory, demonic contracts and their spatial surround, Reformation cosmologies and a landscape newly subject to cartographic surveying. It examines the seemingly incongruous coexistence of traditional religious beliefs and new mathematical, geometrical ways of perceiving the environment. Arguing that the late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century stage dramatized the phenomenological tension that resulted from this uneasy confluence, this groundbreaking study considers the complex nature of supernatural environments in Marlowe's Doctor Faustus and Shakespeare's Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth and The Tempest.     Obgleich die Raumdebatte in den Kulturwissenschaften Konjunktur hat, wird selten darüber nachgedacht, wie sich deren Ergebnisse für die analytische Lektüre literarischer Texte nutzbar machen lassen. Anhand ausgewählter Gegenwartsprosa (von W.G. Sebald, Anne Duden und Herta Müller) will dieses Buch die Zusammenhänge zwischen literarisch artikulierten Raummodellen und texttheoretischen Fragestellungen erhellen. Dabei wird eine Erweiterung der klassischen Positionen zu topologischen und poetologischen Aspekten literarischer Texte ausgearbeitet, die die neueren Entwicklungen in der Raumtheorie konzeptuell aufnimmt.
