We think we know what upward mobility stories are about--virtuous striving justly rewarded, or unprincipled social climbing regrettably unpunished. Either way, these stories seem obviously concerned with the self-making of self-reliant individuals rather than with any collective interest. In Upward Mobility and the Common Good, Bruce Robbins completely overturns these assumptions to expose a hidden tradition of erotic social interdependence at the heart of the literary canon. Reinterpreting novels by figures such as Balzac, Stendhal, Charlotte Bronte, Dickens, Dreiser, Wells, Doctorow, and Ish.

Under a deadweight loss of tax and transfer, there is tension between the optimal policy choices of a Rawlsian social planner and a utilitarian social planner. However, when with a weight greater than a certain critical value the individuals' utility functions incorporate distaste for low relative income, a utilitarian will select exactly the same income distribution as a Rawlsian.

As the recent discussion on Welfare Regimes points out, forms and welfare outcomes of work - economically oriented employment and unpaid family work - are shaped by the ways of interaction between State, Market and Family. Welfare Mixes in Latin America differ from those of long standing capitalist welfare states of the Global North, not only due to lower economic development and very limited public resources. Social policies have little impact on redistribution; institutional social security and public services are rather rudimentary, fragmentary and socially exclusive. It is left to families to manage market risks and to compensate for deficits of public policies. The paper presents and discusses typologies of Latin American Welfare Regimes and their implications for work. Though Latin American states are considered 'truncated welfare states', regime typologies show first that public welfare institutions and policies have a strong impact on the structuring of work; second, they indicate the central role of the family in Caring and social security. However, there are considerable differences between countries. The paper draws some conclusions on deficits and future perspectives of welfare regime research referring to the coexistence of multiple welfare mixes within societies, on the one hand, to the differentiated roles of markets and families as independent variables in the welfare production, on the other hand.

When individuals' utility is a convex combination of their income and their concern at having a low relative income (the weights attached to income and to the concern at having a low relative income sum up to one), the maximization of aggregate utility yields an equal income distribution. This alignment of utilitarianism and egalitarianism is obtained for any number of individuals, and for general utility functions that are convex combinations of a power function of income and the concern at having a low relative income. The alignment can also hold when the weights sum up to a number different than one.

In determining the optimal redistribution of a given population's income, we ask which factor is more important: the social planner's aversion to inequality, embedded in an isoelastic social welfare function indexed by a parameter alpha, or the individuals' concern at having a low relative income, indexed by a parameter beta in a utility function that is a convex combination of (absolute) income and low relative income. Assuming that the redistribution comes at a cost (because only a fraction of a taxed income can be transferred), we find that there exists a critical level of beta below which different isoelastic social planners choose different optimal allocations of incomes. However, if beta is above that critical level, all isoelastic social planners choose the same allocation of incomes because they then find that an equal distribution of incomes maximizes social welfare regardless of the magnitude of alpha.
