    Using the model of indirect translation from modern translation studies, this monograph argues that the Septuagint translation of Isaiah played little to no role in the translation of the Peshiṭta of Isaiah.Since the mid-to-late nineteenth century, many scholars have argued that the translator of the Syriac Peshiṭta of Isaiah (200 CE) frequently consulted and/or translated the Greek Septuagint (140 BCE) at certain points during the process of translation (e.g., when encountering difficult lexis in their Hebrew source text). However, the study of this translational phenomenon has lacked methodological control. Applying indirect translation theory and methodology from modern translation studies to the Peshiṭta of Isaiah, this book argues that where the Peshiṭta of Isaiah and Septuagint of Isaiah agree (against their common Hebrew source in chapters 1-39), the “agreement” is almost always due to common translation technique, rather than direct influence from the older Greek text.

    The Hebrew Bible is a product of ancient editing, but to what degree can this editing be uncovered? "Uncovering Ancient Editing" argues that divergent textual witnesses of the same text, so-called documented evidence, should be the starting point for such an endeavor. The book presents a fresh analysis of Josh 24 and related texts as a test case for refining our knowledge of how scribes edited texts. Josh 24 is envisioned as a gradually growing Persian period text, whose editorial history can be reconstructed with the help of documented evidence preserved in the MT, LXX, and other ancient sources. This study has major implications for both the study of the book of Joshua and text-historical methodology in general

    Alfred Rahlfs (1865–1935) is among the most important textual philologists of the 20th century. His wide-ranging works in researching and editing the Greek Old Testament, known as the Septuagint, are still regarded as groundbreaking today. For the first time, this monograph comprehensively presents Rahlfs’s writings in their biographical and historical context Mit dem Namen von Alfred Rahlfs verbindet sich vor allem seine 1935 erschienene ‚Handausgabe', die noch immer als weltweit gebrauchte Standardedition der Septuaginta gilt. Demgegenüber geriet sein umfassendes wissenschaftliches Gesamtœuvre zunehmend in Vergessenheit, während seine Biographie bis heute weitgehend im Verborgenen geblieben ist. In der vorliegenden Monographie wird zum ersten Mal der Versuch unternommen, die gesamte Vielfalt der Rezensionen, Abhandlungen und Textausgaben von Rahlfs einer detaillierten werkgeschichtlichen Analyse zu unterziehen, an die sich eine synthetische Rekonstruktion seiner textkritischen und editionsphilologischen Methodik anschließt. Auf diese Weise werden die bahnbrechenden Erkenntnisse dieses großen Göttinger Gelehrten in ihrer bis ins 21. Jahrhundert reichenden wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Bedeutung für die Erforschung und kritische Edition des Septuaginta-Textes transparent, deren Verankerung in der Editionsphilologie des 19. Jh. ebenso wie ihre im institutionellen Rahmen des 1908 gegründeten Septuaginta-Unternehmens der Göttinger Akademie der Wissenschaften sich vollziehende Weiterentwicklung aus der erstmaligen vollständigen Darstellung seiner Biographie ersichtlich werden

    These fourteen selected essays were originally read at the LXXSA international conference: Construction, Coherence and Connotation in Septuagint, Apocryphal and Cognate Literature (28-30 August 2015), hosted by the North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa. Here, the intention was to apply new critical theory and approaches to the fields of Old Testament Scripture as well as associated Apocryphal and Cognate literature, with a specific focus on the interrelated recurring theme of the Wisdom of the deity and its decryption and reception at various times in history. In this regard, it was felt that this theme and associated source texts had been largely overlooked in recent scholarship. Here the aim was to attract recent research by both leading national as well as international scholars which not only shed new light on Old Testament Apocrypha and so-called Pseudepigraphical literature but which also critically reviewed certain biblical wisdom texts which are foundational for both the Christian as well as Jewish communities. As a consequence, many of the essays deal with the apocryphal Wisdom of Sirach. However, important contributions may also be found apropos Micah, Daniel, Baruch, 2 Maccabees, Tobit, Susanna, Judith, and the works of Josephus Flavius

    In this article, I examine the interplay of transmission and exegesis in Zechariah's textual history, analyzing the strategies that early interpreters employed to create coherence in a difficult text. I use Zechariah's horse visions as examples, exploring their presentation in the early versions and the Book of Revelation. The following examination explores the form of Zechariah used by these ancient interpreters and the habits of reading that are implied in their presentation of reused material. The evidence suggests that, by the late Second Temple period, the majority of readers conceptualized Zech 1:8 and 6:1-5 as coreferential visions and that this linking was representative of a larger strategy of coherence. This strategy is also part of a wider tradition of correlating Zechariah's horses with other heavenly figures in the Hebrew Bible, a tradition that is most prevalent in Targum Jonathan.

    This contribution to the Festschrift for Sakkie Spangenberg addresses the question of whether it is appropriate and even possible to formulate "the/a theology of the Septuagint." To be sure, this author (Cook) has endeavoured to formulate "theologies" of LXX Proverbs and the Old Greek of Job as case studies. However, there is no consensus that it is appropriate or even viable to do so. There are broadly speaking two groupings in this regard: the minimalists and the maximalists. It is the aim of this paper to take cognisance of this uncertainty and to address diverse perspectives on this issue. After a brief introduction, the minimalists will be introduced, followed by a consideration of the maximalists.

    As a response to the tradition of scholarship that focused on questions of LXX origins, translation techniques and textual criticism, this article looks at how the LXX translations in antiquity were already in certain respects marked as Greek texts at their production, constructed as Greek literary texts in their origins, and subsequently employed in the same ways as compositional Greek texts by those who engaged them. It shows how the author of Aristeas constructs the LXX as a Greek text, how it functioned as such for Aristobulos and Philo. Already the translators demonstrate in their use of poetic language that they could produce literary Greek. Subsequently, Jewish Hellenistic authors employed the LXX alongside other Greek texts, and treated it with the methods of Hellenistic scholarship.

    This article explores the usage of plural νόμοι versus singular νόμος throughout the whole corpus of the Greek Bible. Obviously, the singular is predominant. If we put aside later variants and textual traditions, the rare passages where the plural νόμοι is used (in Proverbs, Jeremiah, Esther, and 2 Maccabees) mutually elucidate each other: the plural occurs where the translators wanted to stress that the law(s) in question should be distinguished from the Torah. With respect to Jer 31:31–34 (LXX 38:31–34) and the quotations from it in Hebrews, the article demonstrates that the plural νόμοι in the LXX cannot be explained by the Vorlage, as many modern researchers suggest, but was a conscious device used by the LXX translator. The aim of the translator, followed by the author of Hebrews, was to stress the distinction between the Law of Moses and the Laws of the New Covenant.

The Mudil Codex from the late 4th century contains the Biblical Psalms in Coptic. However, the text differs significantly from familiar versions of the Psalms, giving rise to the question of whether we are dealing with an original form of the text. "Uncovering Ancient Editing" argues that divergent textual witnesses of the same text, so-called documented evidence, should be the starting point for such an endeavor. The book presents a fresh analysis of Josh 24 and related texts as a test case for refining our knowledge of how scribes edited texts. Josh 24 is envisioned as a gradually growing Persian period text, whose editorial history can be reconstructed with the help of documented evidence preserved in the MT, LXX, and other ancient sources. This study has major implications for both the study of the book of Joshua and text-historical methodology in general

    This article seeks to evaluate why the translators of the Septuagint often preferred literal to free renderings. After some general remarks on levels of literalness the author evaluates possible explanations for the literal renderings in the Septuagint. An alternative interpretation draws on the theories of the translation theorists Schleiermacher (1813) and Venuti (1995). It explains literalism as being rooted in the desire for conservation of the Jewish identity within the context of Hellenistic culture with the hebraicizing style serving as a means of resistance to Hellenism.

    This study elucidates corruption and influence from the versions of the Three Jewish Revisors (Aquila, Symmachus, and Theodotion) on the textual transmission of the Greek Ecclesiastes and its congeners, especially the Old Latin, as well as corruption of the textual transmission of the Three from the LXX. In some cases, the incestuous relationship between the LXX and the Three cannot be sorted out. The Syro-Hexapla, the Syriac translation of the hexaplaric text, is one of the most important and reliable witnesses to the hexaplaric group and to the Three. The analysis clarifies considerably the text history of the LXX Ecclesiastes.

    Der vorliegende Band versammelt Beiträge, die in den Jahren 2007-2009 auf Workshops und internationalen Tagungen des Instituts für Septuaginta- und biblische Textforschung der Kirchlichen Hochschule/Protestant University Wuppertal-Bethel präsentiert wurden. Die Texte nehmen zum einen das Verhältnis der unterschiedlichen Textformen des griechischen Alten Testamentes untereinander, zum anderen die Frage der Zitation alttestamentlicher Texte im Neuen Testament in ihren thematischen Fokus. Untersucht werden die Bedeutung des antiochenischen/lukianischen Textes und der kaige-Rezension für die Rekonstruktion der ältesten griechischen Textform; die Frage, inwieweit diese Rezensionen für die atl. Zitate im NT von Bedeutung sind; das Phänomen der Auszeichnung von atl. Zitaten in Manuskripten des NT durch Diplé sowie die Frage, welche Textvorlage den Zitaten in den verschiedenen ntl. Büchern zugrunde liegt. Weitere Aufsätze widmen sich den modernen Editionsmöglichkeiten biblischer Texte. Der Text der Johannes-Apokalypse und die Rückfrage nach der Rezeption des Alten Testaments durch den Seher bilden einen abschließenden Schwerpunkt, der aufzeigt, dass die biblische Textforschung noch zahlreiche spannende Fragen - und Antworten - bereithält

    Von den Erkenntnissen der modernen Übersetzungswissenschaft wird in der Septuagintaforschung bisher nur wenig Gebrauch gemacht. Um diesem Desiderat zu begegnen, wendet die vorliegende Studie die Skopostheorie (Reiß und Vermehr, 1984), die einen funktionalen Ansatz darstellt, auf das griechische Numeribuch an. Durch eine retrospektive Anwendung der ursprünglich präskriptiv formulierten Theorie lassen sich Rückschlüsse auf den "Sitz im Leben" der Übersetzung und auf die theologische Tendenz des Übersetzers ziehen. Das griechische Numeribuch präsentiert sich als ein Dokument der alexandrinischen Diaspora, dessen Skopos in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen Historisierung und Aktualisierung, zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, zwischen Ideal und Wirklichkeit liegt.     Der koptische Psalmencodex aus al-Mudil ist auf Grund seines hohen Alters (spätes 4. Jhd.) und des beinahe vollständigen Textumfanges ein Kronzeuge für den Septuaginta-Psalter. Wie andere Bibeltexte, die im mittelägyptischen Dialekt überliefert sind, weist auch er viele eigentümliche Lesarten auf. Die hier vorgelegte umfassende Analyse des Textes und seiner Beziehungen zu anderen Psalterversionen führt zur differenzierten Situierung in der Textgeschichte. Es zeigt sich, dass entgegen ersten Hypothesen die Textform nicht wesentlich älter als die Handschrift sein kann. Der koptische Übersetzer hat mehrere Vorlagen verwendet und versucht, auf Grund seines theologischen Verständnisses dem Psalter zu mehr Klarheit zu verhelfen. Der Mudil-Codex ist darum sowohl ein wichtiger Zeuge für teilweise sehr alte Textvarianten als auch ein faszinierendes Beispiel dafür, wie im Ägypten des 4. Jhd mit Bibeltexten umgegangen wurde.Die Studie enthält zwei kritische Neuausgaben griechischer Papyri. Es handelt sich um die Leipziger Papyrusrolle (P. 39 / Rahlfs 2013) und das Londoner Papyrusbuch (P. 37 / Rahlfs U). Beide Texte sind für die Textkritik des Septuaginta-Psalters von höchstem Wert, da sie die einzigen griechischen Zeugen des so genannten "oberägyptischen Textes" sind, der sonst nur auf koptisch erhalten ist

    The Book of Judith has aroused a great deal of scholarly interest in the last few decades.This volume, the first full length commentary on Judith to appear in over 25 years, includes a new translation and a detailed verse-by-verse commentary, which touches upon philological, literary, and historical questions. The extensive introduction discusses the work's date and historical background, and looks closely at the controversial question of the book's original language. Biblical influences on the book's setting, characters, plot, and language are investigated, and the heroine, Judith is viewed against the background of biblical women (and men).
