    Here is a much needed introductory textbook on empirical research methods for the Humanities. Especially aimed at students and scholars of Literature, Applied Linguistics, and Film and Media, it stimulates readers to reflect on the problems and possibilities of testing the empirical assumptions and offers hands-on learning opportunities to develop empirical studies. It explains a wide range of methods, from interviews to observation research, and guides readers through the choices researchers have to make. It discusses the essence of experiments, illustrates how studies are designed, how to develop questionnaires, and helps readers to collect and analyze data by themselves. The book presents qualitative approaches to research but focuses mostly on quantitative methods, detailing the workings of basic statistics. In The Tenets of Cognitive Existentialism, Dimitri Ginev draws on developments in hermeneutic phenomenology and other programs in hermeneutic philosophy to inform an interpretative approach to scientific practices. At stake is the question of whether it is possible to integrate forms of reflection upon the ontological difference in the cognitive structure of scientific research.     What happens to scientific knowledge when researchers outside the natural sciences bring elements of the latest trend across disciplinary boundaries for their own purposes? Researchers in fields from anthropology to family therapy and traffic planning employ the concepts, methods, and results of chaos theory to harness the disciplinary prestige of the natural sciences, to motivate methodological change or conceptual reorganization within their home discipline, and to justify public policies and aesthetic judgments. Using the recent explosion in the use (and abuse) of chaos theory, Borrowed Knowledge and the Challenge of Learning across Disciplines examines the relationship between science and other disciplines as well as the place of scientific knowledge within our broader culture. Stephen H. Kellert's detailed investigation of the myriad uses of chaos theory reveals serious problems that can arise in the interchange between science and other knowledge-making pursuits, as well as opportunities for constructive interchange.     Es ist weithin bekannt, dass Georg Büchner im Frühjahr und Sommer 1834 den Hessischen Landboten, eine der radikalsten Flugschriften des Vormärz, verfasste, druckte und verteilte. Weniger bekannt ist, dass er zum gleichen Zeitpunkt in einer Vorlesung saß, die dem Thema »Naturrecht und Allgemeine Politik« gewidmet war. Gehalten wurde diese Vorlesung im Sommersemester 1834 von dem Gießener Professor für Philosophie Joseph Hillebrand, der Mitte der 1830er Jahre weit über Gießen hinaus als idealistischer Philosoph bekannt war. Diese Vorlesung zur politischen Philosophie, die in der Mitschrift durch einen Kommilitonen Büchners überliefert wurde, bietet grundlegende Ausführungen zum Natur- und Staatsrecht und deren anthropologischen Voraussetzungen, aber auch zum Privat- und Strafrecht sowie zu Fragen der politischen Ökonomie und damit zu den staatlichen Pflichten gegenüber dem die 1830er Jahre prägenden Phänomen des Pauperismus. In kritischer Anbindung an Kant und insbesondere Hegel stellt die Vorlesung ein paradigmatisches Modell für eine Philosophie des Politischen im Vormärz dar. Erstmals bietet sie zudem umfassende Einblicke in das Konzept wissenschaftlicher Politik, das Georg Büchner im Sommersemester 1834 vorgestellt bekam und das ihn weithin prägen sollte. Der Text dokumentiert also, was Büchner hörte, bevor er den Hessischen Landboten verfasste.

    This interdisciplinary study establishes connections between divergent approaches to rationality in philosophy, social science, and literary studies. Livingston provides a broad survey of the basic assumptions and questions associated with concepts of rationality in philosophical accounts of action, in decision theory, and in the theory of rational choice. He gives examples of the ways in which rationality is involved in the writing and reading of literary works, ranging from Icelandic sagas to Beckett, Dreiser, Lem, Poe and Zola. Topics examined include the role of concepts of desire, intention, and planning in action explanations, the relation between cognition and motivation, the rationality of desire, atomic versus agential perspectives on rationality, the rationality of groups and institutions, and the question of the rationality of science
