    This book attempts an innovative exploration of the connection between humour and scepticism in the English literary canon. Defining humour as a capability, or better put, as a dunamis, it looks into its ’energeiac‘ forms of actualisation in the English literary imagination from Chaucer to Sterne. Refraining from attributing an essentialist tone and mode to the theoretical and critical reception of English humour, and also humour in a wider context, it works instead within a literary nominalist framework where it is explored as a literary phenomenon that sides with the living, the multifarious, and the experiential dimensions of human action. In doing so, it develops a broader argument concerning the nominalist overtones of English humour where its prominent scepticism purports an epistemological break with the dominant forces of universalism; an argumentative force which cyclically acquires its tenets from the preliminary discussion that focuses on the dynamicism of humour.

    In der spanischen Renaissance gehört der Dialog zu den erfolgreichsten und dynamischsten Medien der historischen Wissensverhandlung. Anders als im Traktat werden epistemische Aussagen hier in eine literarische Form überführt und mit ästhetischen Prozessen kontaminiert, die das Wissen der klassischen Autoritäten in ein neues Licht rücken. Gerade die poetische Inszenierung erlaubt es den spanischen Humanisten, alternative Sichtweisen des kulturellen Archivs auszuloten, auch hermeneutische Beirrung und skeptischen Zweifel einzuflechten. Die Studie zeigt mit Lektüren von Pedro Mexías Diálogos o Coloquios (1547) und Pedro de Mercados Diálogos de filosofía natural y moral (1558), inwiefern die fiktiven Gespräche als Reflexionsmedium von Wissenschaft fungieren und die Kadenz des Aristotelismus in den Bereichen der Argumentationstheorie und der Naturphilosophie vorbereiten.

    This article explores the questions of marriage and divorce as discussed by Stanley Cavell in his study of Classical Hollywood comedies, dubbing what he considered as a popular subgenre of the American comedy of the thirties and forties: the "comedy of remarriage". We will focus on Cavell's analysis of a series of films, and the way these comedies belong to a specific American school of thought, with a case study of The Awful Truth (Leo McCarey, US 1937). We will then try to identify, in Cavell's original approach of marriage and divorce in the light of his discussion of philosophical skepticism, traces of Kierkegaard's moral legacy, by way of Wittgenstein's influence on the American thinker.
