The thesis deals with the biblical story in the first book of Samuel which describes how David plays music for Saul to disperse his melancholy. The focus lies on a diverse artistic analysis until the baroque period and involves the interaction of music, mental illness and the Christian belief. After a short illustration of David´s story, the thesis presents 60 pieces of theme-related works of art and discusses thereby resulting problems in eight chapters. These include the question about the ban on music in churches, the illustrators´ accuracy on documents, the problems about drafts and the image of melancholy during the Middle Ages. Apart from that the paper introduces David as a patron of music and shows that he has been a role model for medieval rulers. The analysis finishes with the question about the iconography of the scene and examines the changing aspects of the pictures. After the picture research the thesis concentrates on a segment about biblical instruments, including the development of the harp, which is also important for the artistic representation. Finally the paper presents a short storyline about music therapy for which David counts as a first literary example and deals with different diagnoses of King Saul´s illness in the Middle Ages.

Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, a novel of self-realization greatly admired by the Romantics, has been called the first Bildungsroman and has had a tremendous influence on the history of the German novel. The story centers on Wilhelm, a young man living in the mid-1700s who strives to break free from the restrictive world of economics and seeks fulfillment as an actor and playwright. Along with Eric Blackall's fresh translation of the work, this edition contains notes and an afterword by the translator that aims to put this novel into historical and artistic perspective for twentieth-century readers while showing how it defies categorization

In most scholarship, the term ‘Messiah' is used to describe a divinely appointed figure who will come at the end of days. In contrast, in the Bible the term ??????, ‘anointed', is reserved for a person anointed with oil who holds a high office. This clear-cut distinction has led many scholars to search for the origin of the figure of the Messiah in Second Temple Judaism. This article argues that the origin of the former understanding of the term ‘Messiah' is found already in biblical anointment narratives. In the historical books of the Bible that narrate the monarchic period (Samuel-Kings), only those who were not eligible for kingship by birth were anointed—some of them by divine decree. When anointing is performed in compliance with divine ordinance, as is the case with Saul, David, and Jehu, it has a soteriological facet.

The Fall of the Two Royal Houses and its Polemics in 1 and 2 Samuel

Bathsheba’s role in the story of the house of David bears an often-overlooked intertextual connection to the story of the Witch of Endor. In the books of Samuel, the two women triggered a chain of events that later led to the fall of the houses of David and Saul, respectively. While past scholarship has independently studied the importance of the stories of these two women, the present paper describes the intertextual connections and the significance of these two stories in the matrix of 1 and 2 Samuel and the Deuteronomistic History (DtrH). The two royal houses in the stories of these two women are subtly indicted for adulterous affairs against Yahweh. Consequently, the story of Saul at Endor and the story of David’s adultery with Bathsheba are not only intertextually connected to each other but also fulfil a subversive agenda.

The character of Saul and his place within the history, theology, and ideology of ancient Israel have fascinated interpreters for centuries. This book surveys the field of Saul studies. It includes in the first instance essays detailing Saul's place within the biblical narrative and its constituent parts (such as the Deuteronomistic History and the Chronicler's work). The possibility of identifying a Saulide period in the archaeological record is also discussed. A number of essays look at more specific themes and passages within the Saul cycle, such as his heroic nature, kingship, war, and literary balance. The final section of the book looks at the place of Saul within the post-biblical interpretative traditions, with essays devoted to Saul in the works of Josephus, in midrashic literature, in the Qur'an, in selected European literary texts, in the western artistic tradition, and in Handel's oratorio Saul. Legendary producer-director Cecil B. DeMille was a master of the American biblical epic and a devout Hollywood businessman whose films inspired numerous extra-cinematic products plus screen characters designed to match market demographics whilst promoting public piety. For example, his main biblical protagonists within his family-friendly Samson and Delilah were crafted to appeal to adult audiences, but it is argued that DeMille also meticulously crafted young Saul (Russell Tamblyn) as a mini-me mirror of Samson (Victor Mature) to directly appeal to his youthful audiences, thereby assisting box office sales and helping shape US Christian culture. DeMille’s filmmaker status, businessman background, and ten Samson-Saul parallels are explicated here, guided methodologically by humanist film criticism plus a selective review of the critical literature. This original investigation reveals that DeMille was a far more insightful, creative, and business-savvy filmmaker than previously acknowledged. Further research into DeMille studies, biblical epics, and the emerging interdisciplinary field of religion and film is recommended.
