    Die Bedeutung von Tradition in den Alltagskulturen der Gegenwart unterliegt einem markanten Wandel. Unter dem Einfluss von Globalisierungsprozessen und dem Innovationsdruck der modernen Popkultur sinken die kulturellen Zugangsschwellen zu traditionalen Phänomenen. Tradition wird fluide und erfährt so eine Revitalisierung in den unterschiedlichsten populärkulturellen Medien.Am Beispiel der zentralen europäischen Traditionsfigur des Teufels zeichnet diese Studie den fundamentalen Wandel nach, den Satan, Mephisto, Luzifer durch den Transfer in das popkulturelle Medium Rockmusik vollzogen hat. Auf der methodischen Grundlage einer Analyse popularer Medientexte entwickelt sich so eine spannende und materialreiche Geschichte des Diabolischen in der Rockmusik von den „Teufelspakten“ des Delta Blues über das Spiel mit populärer Religiosität der Beatles bis zu den satanistischen Black-Metal-Szenen der modernen Heavy-Metal-Kultur. Dabei wird deutlich, wie sehr der Rekurs auf den Teufel stets von zeit- und gruppenspezifischen kulturellen Bedürfnissen gelenkt wird. Das Traditionale bleibt stets auch das Aktuelle. Es bildet eine wichtige Zukunftsoption innerhalb der reflexiven Moderne.     Jesus rebukes Peter at Caesarea Philippi by calling him ‘Satan'. The redactor of Matthew adds to this: ‘You are a stumbling block for me!' This article argues that this editorial addition reflects a tendency in Jewish sources (1) to use the image of ‘stumbling' to talk of sin, and (2) to identify the diabolic figure (e.g. Satan, Belial, Evil Inclination) as the cause of ‘stumbling', earning it the title ‘stumbling block'. This tendency has its origins in the Hebrew Bible, is clearly expressed in the literature of the Qumran community, and is further developed in rabbinic sources., French abstract: À Césarée de Philippe Jésus se mit à réprimander Pierre en l'appellent « Satan ». Le rédacteur de l'Évangile selon Matthieu y ajoute « Tu es pour moi occasion de chute! » Cet article soutient que cet ajout rédactionnel reflète une tendance qui se manifeste dans les sources juives à (1) employer l'image de « trébucher » pour parler du péché, et (2) identifier le personnage diabolique (Satan, Bélial, l'Ange des Ténèbres, Penchant mauvais) comme la cause de « trébuchement ». Cela lui vaut le titre de « pierre d'achoppement ». Cette tendance a ses origines dans la Bible hébraïque, elle se manifeste dans la littérature de la communauté de Qumran, et se développe ultérieurement dans la littérature rabbinique.

    "The Devil is a catchy lyric." This quote from the movie American Satan (Ash Avildsen, US 2017), when Mr. Capricorn (the devil) promises international success to a young heavy-metal band in Los Angeles and its singer, Johnny Faust. The pact must be sealed with a human sacrifice. Linking rock or heavy metal with the devil or demonic powers is a theme that has been used repeatedly in music and film. In this article, two films from independent productions are analyzed to study how the devil reaches people through rock music and ultimately influences their actions. In addition, the temporal context and the events that affected the content of the screenplays are discussed.

    In Cain Byron demonstrates his interest in using the Bible to critique itself. He sticks close to the letter of his biblical source while engaging directly with traditional scriptural readings including the commonplace combination of the Devil with the serpent who tempts Eve—which Byron’s Lucifer rebuts himself. Byron engages more subtly with the typological equivalence frequently drawn between Abel and Christ, allowing the equivalence to stand but refusing to employ it to legitimize Christianity at the expense of Judaism. Byron thus seeks to rehabilitate two of Genesis’ most reviled characters as part of his search for a credible deliverer of his critique. Cain is juxtaposed with Lucifer and then with his sister Adah and brother Abel. These doublings within the play ultimately demonstrate that Cain is the figure most worthy of conveying Byron’s culminating critique of Christian hypocrisy at the play’s close.

    This question on how religious beliefs shape attitudes about guns has received little attention in the literature. We use the religious concept of supernatural evil, or beliefs about Satan, Hell, Armageddon, and demons, to provide context for ideas about gun ownership and the development of attitudes toward gun policy. While this has been explored quantitatively using national survey data, we argue that an in-depth qualitative approach provides necessary nuance. As part of an ongoing ethnography in Northeastern Kansas, we conducted interviews with 55 women and 7 men who own and shoot guns. For this paper, we report on a religion module subsample that probes religiosity, spirituality, and gun ownership. Based on the rich contextual information from the interviews, we illuminate a package of beliefs that come together as an ethic, a set of moral principles guiding gun ownership for a subset of gun owners. We suggest the spirit of gun ownership is a bundle of duties that guide individual gun owners to stress the need to protect, be diligent, and defend. Moreover, belief in supernatural evil is bound up in policy attitudes that protect or expand gun rights.
