    Over the years, many scholars have contributed to the clarification of various aspects of the poem in praise of Sarai’s beauty in column XX of the Genesis Apocryphon. This article offers a new explanation for the conundrum of the formsלהין in line 3 and להן in line 6. I propose that these forms represent variant spellings of the Biblical Aramaic conjunctive adverb 'therefore', which is here employed as a modal particle. By using it, the speaker wishes to stress that his statement is true and convince the addressee that he should maintain the same point of view. Having established the grammatical analysis of the form, I pose the question why it was used in the poem. On the one hand, I entertain the possibility of influence from Greek literary style. And on the other hand, I provide a fresh analysis of the poetical structure of the piece in search for possible metrical reasons for the occurrences of the particle.

    This article analyses Philo of Alexandria's and Josephus Flavius's interpretations of Sarah from the viewpoint of social and political power attached to her. Both ascribe the figure royal attributes (i.e. she is depicted as a princess or queen) and other features that promote her as a virtuous model and an individual of public standing. A variety of emphases, philological and philosophical interpretations alike, jointly serve to construct Sarah's exemplarity. The aim of this article is to demonstrate that different dimensions of biblical female figures may be revealed when their role as spouses and mothers is not taken as the starting point of analysis in studies concerning the reception history of biblical women.

    This article treats the reference to the Jewish matriarch Sarah in 1 Pet 3,5-6, long a crux interpretum in NT studies, as a test case in the larger methodological question of interpreting ancient writers’ uses of biblical verses. Whereas some biblical scholars assert that we cannot understand a quotation or allusion in a biblical text unless we also consider its original context, others insist that the original context of a received text is irrelevant because ancient Jewish biblical interpreters regularly took small textual details as launching points for wholly new interpretations. We want to challenge both sides of this methodological debate. Biblical scholars err when representing this issue in an 'all or nothing' fashion, as though one particular interpretive strategy (decontextualizing or evoking context) could ever typify one particular tradition (Jewish or Christian). We show that rabbinic interpreters and writers of New Testament texts employ various reading practices, drawing on or disregarding original contexts according to which strategy will be most rhetorically efficacious in a given moment. A comparative look at such questions not only allows for better and more nuanced understandings of each source individually, but can also help trace the trajectories of certain interpretive readings in the different communities of Late Antiquity.
